Ronaldinho chooses ‘best player’ between Messi, Ronaldo, gives reasons

Brazil legend, Ronaldinho has picked his ‘best player’ between Barcelona ace, Lionel Messi, and Juventus star, Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 38-year-old explained that he prefers Messi over Ronaldo because of the manner in which the Argentine captain plays the game.

Ronaldinho, who is a three-time winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award, believes Messi is the best player of all time because the Barca No. 10 has done what no other player has done.

Speaking on who is the better player between Messi and Ronaldo, Ronaldinho told Sport, “For me it’s not a question over who is more complete, it’s a question of taste.

“I prefer Messi’s style. He [Messi] is the best in history, no doubt.

“Nobody has done what Messi’s done. I hope he plays 20 more years.

“Those who love football would love to have him here [Barcelona] for much longer.

“I think when he leaves, nobody will be able to take the No 10 of Leo.”

He added, “The other one [Ronaldo] is complete, he has it all.

“So does Messi, but it’s a question of taste and I prefer Messi’s style.”

Ronaldinho spent five years at Barcelona after arriving in 2003, during which he won two La Liga titles, a Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

As we are preparing for 2019 general elections, everybody, especially the youths should come out and vote for person that is credible, and who has the vision, capacity to transform the entire system of Abia state,” he said.

Atiku breaks down in tears after receiving presidential nomination forms (photos)

- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar shed tears over state of the nation after he received the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential nomination form bought by his support group

- Atiku in an emotional speech noted that he has not received this much love from the people since three decades he has been in politics

- Support groups of the former vice president had purchased and presented the nomination and expression of interest forms to Atiku, urging him to contest for presidency in the 2019 election

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday, August 31, shed tears openly over the sorry state of the nation when he received the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential nomination form bought by his support group, Nigerian Tribune reports.

eagleee.com gathered that Atiku lamented the hopelessness in the country and vowed to restore sanity to the land if elected as president come 2019.

The former vice president speaking in Abuja after Atiku Support group, a movement drumming support for his presidential candidature handed him the expression of interest and nomination forms bought on his behalf, assured that he was in the race to restore the lost glory of the nation which the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had failed to do as earlier promised.

He declared that the form was significant and historic because it was the first time in his political career that young men and women in the country would come together without his knowledge and consent to contribute their hard earned money to buy him to the forms.

He said: “It is almost three decades of my political career this year. But today has also turned out to be one of the most emotional days in those three decades of my political career. I have tried to present myself as a candidate for the office of the president in a number of elections. The only time I succeeded in being on the ballot was in 2007.

“In 2007, I was on the ballot not because I believe I was going to win but because I wanted to prove a constitutional issue so that all Nigerians can avail themselves with the constitutional protection and I succeeded at the Supreme Court. And that is why today no Nigerian can be stopped from contesting an election unless he has been convicted by a court of law.”

“But putting together such talented ‎young Nigerians requires leadership and it is that leadership we have not been fortunate enough to have on a consistent basis as that this country so that this country can take its rightful position in Africa and indeed the world

“But you could have seen one of the people who spoke, the lady who spoke virtually succeeded in getting me to weep. This is because she aptly described the challenges every Nigerian is facing in this country today and she believed honestly and sincerely from the bottom of her heart that I could be an instrument of addressing those challenges.

“So, for such a woman to believe that I have got those leadership qualities and including those of you who have brought out your monies to by this form is one of the most serious challenges I have ever faced in my political career.

“It is not that it is not doable, it is doable and I think together we can do it. So, ladies and gentlemen, I want to make an undertaking and I hope we get that opportunity to work together so that this undertaking of mine can be achieved because I alone cannot achieve that undertaking

“I hope this endeavours of ours will result in a success in the nomination and of course subsequently in the general election so that together we can work. The undertaking I’m going to give you is that it is our job together, and I promised you‎ we are going to doing it together

“Let me once again extend to you my greatest admiration for this gesture you have done to me and I believe as you purchased the form, so you will also run round to make sure that I ‎have been duly nominated from different parts of this country so that when I go to submit the forms I will again enjoy your company and support.

“And on that day, let us overwhelm the PDP Secretariat, let us bring Abuja to a standstill, I bet you by the time we overwhelm the secretariat and bring Abuja to a standstill, the PDP we have no alternative than to give us the ticket.”

The former vice president recalled that he was brought into politics as a young man by the late Musa Yar’dua who urged them to break the regional siege that every part of the county had been subjected to which he said prompted all his actions in his political career in life.

Princess Adekemi Adesanya, in her remarks, on behalf of Atiku Support Group said that visionless leadership and bad economic policies were responsible for the present contraption in the nation’s economy.

The national co-ordinator ‎of Atiku Abubakar Support Group, Hon Oladimeji Fabayi also, speaking at the occasion, said that the various groups drumming supports for the Wazirin Adamawa decided to purchase to forms based on their conviction that he was capable of restoring sanity back to the country with his wealth of experience.

Emiratco previously reported that former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has assured aspirants to elective positions in 2019 general elections of level-playing ground in the primaries to be conducted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He gave the assurance while receiving former Governor of Sokoto state, Alhaji Atihiru Bafarawa, on Friday in his office in Yenagoa.

Jonathan said that with a free and fair primary election, any aspirants that lost would not be aggrieved but would support others for the progress of the party.

2019: Dogara reacts after aide dumps APC for PDP

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said yesterday that he had nothing to do with the political ambition of one of his aides, Iliya Habila, who had declared his intention to seek a ticket to the Bauchi Sate House of Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Habila, a media aide to Dogara, wants to represent the Bogoro Constituency.

Dogara’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, has now made it clear that the Speaker had no input or influenced Habila’s political aspiration.

“Contrary to reports published by some national dailies, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, did not endorse any aspirant to vie for the Bogoro Constituency in the Bauchi State House of Assembly or any other.

”His constituents and political associates know that he does not interfere and will not endorse anybody, and neither will he ask anyone to seek election under the platform of any political party; whether the All Progressives Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party,” Hassan stated.

It said the report published by a national daily was misleading and baseless and should be discarded.

Terver Akase, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, in a statement issued on Firday said Ortom is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, not SDP and as such, could not have stopped anyone in the opposition party from purchasing nomination forms.

According to him, “Even in PDP, the Governor has not prevented other aspirants from buying nomination forms, so why would he interfere with the process of another political party?

“The said newspaper report is apparently sponsored, reckless and highly unprofessional. Such a sweeping statement ought to have been supported with evidence.

“We also found ridiculous, the claim in the report that Governor Ortom has secretly purchased his PDP nomination form. Why would a sitting Governor go to pick his party’s nomination form in secret? Political parties do not sell their nomination forms in secret.

“We urge members of the public to disregard the said report in its entirety.

Enough of white elephant projects – Ondo residents tell Akeredolu

Residents of Ondo State have accused the present government in the state of showing penchant for white elephant projects.

According to the residents, who spoke exclusively with DAILY POSTS in different locations, Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s government in the state has been that of “flag-off of projects,” particularly roads.

The governor in February this year flagged off the dualisation of the Hospital/Ijoka road in Akure, the state capital, as well as the Ore intersection flyover in Odigbo local government area of the state, in commemoration of the first year anniversary of the governor in office, with the assurance to the people of timely completion of the road projects.

However, residents and property owners on the axis of the designated projects expressed their disappointment that contractors were yet to move to site despite government’s assurance.

A member of staff of the state’s Local Government Service Commission who resides in the Oluwatuyi area of Akure, the state capital told our correspondent that Akeredolu’s government believes more in the flag off of projects than executing them.

The local government worker who preferred anonymity stated that anytime a project was to be embarked upon, it was more of a carnival-like procession as party members are mobilised from across the 18 council areas of the state to Akure, with all of them decking uniformed attires.

“What is currently happening in this state is so quite unfortunate. When he (Gov. Akeredolu) came on board, most of us who supported him had thought he would be better. But with the situation of things at present, we can only pray to God.

“Tell me the kind of explanation to give on the proposed dualisation of Hospital-Ijoka road dualization project which was flagged-off over six months ago with pomp and pageantry.

“Do you know that during the flag-off, the whole of Akure was shut down. I could recollect vividly how taxi operators bitterly complained about the shut down. It was as if they commissioned an already executed project.

“Even that day, immediately after the ceremony which was held at the A – Division axis of the road, all the earth equipment displayed vanished after it has been said that work will commence in earnest on the road; six months after, nothing is happening. It is case of another white elephant project.”

Also, for Mrs Taye Akintunjoye, a former shop owner along high Court section of the road who expressed displeasure on the attitude of government towards the road project, if she had known that the project would be delayed, she would not have quit her shop.

“I used to make great sales when I was selling at the former shop. But when we heard that they (government) wanted to dualise the road, we had to move to this place, because most of us rented the shops and we don’t want a situation we are going to pay to landlords and weeks after, we will be told to move.

“Now, look at what has happened, since February when they flagged-off the project, nothing whatsoever is happening on the road.

“Some of us were even sceptical about the entire process, because prior to the highly ceremonious flag off, the valuation ought to have been done as well as the markings. But nothing of such happened.”

In Ore, Odigbo local government area of the state, the flyover at Ore intersection was also flagged off in February this year with residents of the area showing concerns if the project would ever be embarked upon.

A member of the driver’s union who simply gave his name as Akinkunmi maintained that when the governor came with his team to flag off the flyover, everyone’s excitement was well pronounced as no-one could hide the heartfelt joy because the flyover has been long over due.

He said the excitement had long worn out as meaningful work was not visible on the road, which is highly prone to ghastly motor accidents almost on weekly basis.

“Here in Ore, our main challenge is this portion of the road. A week can hardly go by without an accident occurring, hence the reason for our excitement in February when Aketi came to flag off the flyover.

“But it has turned out to be one of the political gimmicks we have been used to before now. When they knew they are not ready for such a project, why roll out the drums.

“I am sure you must have since what Amosu (Ogun State Governor) did on the Sagamu expressway with such a magnificent flyover. So, what is the excuse here.”

Meanwhile, one of the top officials of the Gov. Akeredolu’s government who preferred anonymity informed DAILY POST that the actual plan was that by August, work will commence on the Hospital-Ijoka road but that the valuation of the affected buildings was still on-going, hence reason for the delay.

The source also disclosed that the flyover project was still shaky as the present finances of the state government cannot finance such a project, coupled with the directive of the federal government that no state would be reimbursed anytime soon if they embark on any federal road project.

“We are hopeful that as soon the valuation processes are done, the people might begin to see some action on the road. Although we did not envisage that it will take this long but hopefully we will get there.

“As regards the flyover at Ore, the plan was that we will finance the project and later claim the expenses from the Federal Ministry of Works, but we got the signal that reimbursement might be a herculean task. So, we had to put that on hold. But, we are optimistic that when the state has the capability as regards finance, then we are good to go.

“Just the way we met brick wall with the Ore flyover, we are faced with the same situation with the proposed dualisation of the Akure-Ikere road, which is in a terrible state.

“But, I think the governor should be commended, because in the past 18 months, he has been able to deliver 45-kilometre road projects in the state,” he added.

He said this while assuring those aspiring for elective positions in the PDP ahead of the 2019 election of a level-playing ground in the primaries.

Jonathan said that with free and fair primaries, no aspirant that lost would be aggrieved but would support others for the progress of the party.

He said that Bafarawa was one of the aspirants he trusted because of what he had done in Sokoto state as governor.

Jonathan said, “As leaders, we must plan for our grandchildren; we don’t have to plan for ourselves, but for the society to grow.

“When you plan for your grandchildren, you do things properly; you will not be in a hurry and the society will grow.

Atiku reveals how Yar’Adua brought him into politics, lessons he learnt

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Friday revealed that the late former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua brought him into politics.

The Waziri of Adamawa disclosed that he learnt the rudiments of partisan politics from the late Yar’Adua.

Speaking at the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Secretariate in Abuja, Abubakar said, “The man who actually ‎brought me into politics, the late Shehu Yar’dua, when he invited me as a young man told us to break the regional siege that every part of this country had been subjected to.

“He asked us to reach out to every Nigerian across the Niger. To him and for him, that was a major objective; so when he died and I decided to build the Yar’ Adua centre in his memory, we got an architect to design the uncompleted bridge.

“The significance of that bridge was that we had started building bridges of understanding and unity across this country and unfortunately, the man who started building that bridge died. I wish I could complete building that bridge.”

Declare my police summon illegal – Fani-Kayode tells Court

Former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, alleging plot by the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, to infringe on his fundamental human rights.

He prayed the court to quash and declare as illegal, a summon Police issued for him to appear at its headquarters to be interrogated over allegations bordering on conspiracy, criminal defamation, inciting publication, injurious falsehold and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

Cited as respondents in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/917/ 2018, were the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, the Nigerian Police, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Specifically, the former Minister, who is a frontline critic of the President Muhamadu Buhari-led administration, prayed the court to declare that the said letter of invitation by the police was unlawful, unjustifiable, illegal and unconstitutional.

He contended that the invitation which originally asked him to report to the Force Headquaters last Tuesday, was vague and ambigious.

The plaintiff, through his lawyer, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, urged the court to declare that in accordance with the 1999 constitution, as amended, he cannot be so invited by law enforcement agents for undisclosed reasons and without adequate notice.

He told the court that the invitation letter was so vaguely construed that “I became apprehensive and concerned about the intentions of the Nigerian Police and what my fate could be, should I visit the 1st and 2nd respondents office without filing this application”.

According to him, being aware that activities of the respondents could have negative impact on his freedom of movement, liberty and dignity, he decided to approach the court to enforce his fundamental rights.

He begged the court to stop the police from inflicting on him any form of unlawful arrest and detention.

Meanwhile, Justice Nnamdi Dimgba has ordered that all the relevant court processes be served on all the respondents to enable them to appear on September 13 for hearing.

The court made the order after it okayed that the matter be heard during vacation.

However, regardless of the suit, Fani-Kayode’s lawyer said he has prevailed on his client to honour the Police invitation on September 4, which is the rescheduled date.

In a letter dated August 31 and addressed to the IGP, Ajulo drew attention of the Police to the suit.

Though he acknowledged need for all the parties to avoid any action capable of overreaching the suit, the plaintiff’s lawyer confirmed the availability of his client.

“Nevertheless, as our firm’s practice and our client’s position is, being a nationalist, patriotic and responsible Nigerian, we hereby confirm that our client will honour your invitation as scheduled for September 4, 2018 by 12 noon”, read part of the letter with reference No: KACCL/OR/377/18.

In a 20-paragraphed affidavit that was personally deposed to by the former Minister, he insisted that he would lose considerable goodwill, honour and prestige among his friends, neighbours, associates and Nigerians as a whole, “should the dreaded unlawful acts of the Respondents be implemented”.

2019: Kwankwaso reveals what will happen if he loses PDP presidential primary

A former governor of Kano State and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he would remain in the party and work for its success even if he loses the party’s presidential primary.

Kwankwaso stated this while speaking to reporters after obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms on Friday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

He also said that if the party’s leadership agreed on consensus, he would abide by the decision.

Kwankwaso recalled that he came second at the presidential primary election of the APC prior to the 2015 general elections, but remained calm, adding that “I don’t think anything will happen differently if I am not the winner at the primary.

“Consensus is the best under normal circumstances but some aspirants may prefer to go for the primaries and get one vote. If our leaders come together and say this is a consensus candidate, I will abide by it.”

2019: Full text of Saraki’s declaration to run for presidency

Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Thursday formally declared his intention to run for the presidency in the 2019 general elections.

Saraki announced his intention while speaking to youths at an event which held at the Sheraton hotel, Abuja

In his speech, Saraki promised to set the right course for Nigeria.

His full speech below:

1. Let me say, once again, how wonderful it is to see so many talented and purposeful young people at this first edition of the Public Dialogue Series with Political Parties on Youth Candidacy and Party Primaries. Looking at you, I see future leaders who present themselves as capable and worthy to take on the mantle of leadership in this country, and this gladdens my heart.

2. From my interactions with many of you, and with your contemporaries across the country, I can see that we are blessed with a determined generation that stands ready to join with us to power a Nigerian renaissance. The quality of people I see here today affirms my belief that, indeed, you are Not Too Young To Run.

3. I deeply appreciate this opportunity to share some of my ideas about where we are as a nation, as well as the challenges before us as we approach the great decider that is the 2019 General Elections.

4. It is widely acknowledged that ours is a relatively ‘young’ country bursting with tremendous energy, ability and potential. More than 70 per cent of our population is under the age of 40. You are indeed the future of this country. Ordinarily, such a young population would be the envy of many Western countries that are faced with ageing populations, but the dire state of our affairs tarnishes the youthful advantage that we have.

5. Up and down our country today, Nigerians are crying out for succour. Many of our children are hungry. Many people are dying of avoidable or otherwise treatable diseases. Many have fallen below basic living standards, and are now among the 87 million that sealed Nigeria’s position as the country with the highest number of people in extreme poverty. Our young people lack opportunities. The necessary education facilities and system to equip them for the future simply do not exist. We are not creating the jobs needed to usefully engage them in order to grow our economy. And too often, the youth feel shut out, prevented from having any say in the direction of this nation.

6. The harsh conditions of extreme poverty faced by the people, fuels the state of insecurity all over the country. Hunger, lack of education and lack of opportunities push many Nigerians into criminal activities including terrorism. Many of our communities are paralysed with fear – due to incessant communal crises, kidnappings and other social ills, as well as the threat of terrorism. We are failing abysmally to tackle the problems of today and to prepare for the future.

7. Our economy is broken and is in need of urgent revival in order for Nigeria to grow. GDP growth rate has declined. Diversification remains an illusion. Unemployment is at an all-time high. Businesses are shutting down. Jobs are being lost in record numbers, and the capital needed to jumpstart our economy is going elsewhere.

8. Nigeria is perhaps more divided now than ever before. We are increasingly divided along regional, religious and ethnic lines. Nigerians are also divided by class, a festering gulf between the ‘Haves’ and the ‘Have-Nots’. The fault lines of this nation are widening to an alarming degree. We must do something fast, and we must be brave about it.

9. We must ensure the security of lives in Nigeria. As things stand now, no one is safe in this country. No one feels truly safe. We must restore the sanctity of the rule of law and strengthen democratic institutions in order to build a just, fair and equitable society for all. We must rebuild the trust of our people in government. We need a new generation of leaders that are competent, with the capability to rise to the challenges of the 21st century. We must pull this country back together and rebuild, block by block, with dedication and commitment.

10. You will agree with me that this is an urgent task that requires the concerted efforts of each and every one of us. If we look around today, what do we see? What is the condition of our citizens? Where are we as a nation? How are we perceived locally and internationally? Why are we not making the expected progress? Why are we not growing? There is no time to waste. The time is now, to come together to stimulate growth in Nigeria, especially in the national economy.

11. The choice we face in the forthcoming election is either to keep things as they are, or make a radical departure from the old ways. To find a better way of doing things or keep repeating the mistakes of the past. To fix the problems or keep compounding them.

12. It is with all these in mind, and taking account of the challenges that I have outlined, that I have decided to answer the call of teeming youth who have asked me to run for President. Accordingly, I hereby announce my intention to run for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the coming General Elections in 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I do so with the firm conviction that I have what it takes to secure inclusive growth for Nigeria and Nigerians.

13. My Plan for Nigeria has inclusion in all aspects of the country’s affairs as a central pillar. Every citizen has the inalienable right to feel a sense of belonging, no matter their background or creed, or what part of the country they come from. No matter who you voted for or what your convictions are, government must work for you.

14. Your generation does not deserve to live in the poverty capital of the world. It is no longer an issue of how we got here, but how do we get out of this situation? I promise you that I will lead the fight and employ every God-given resource available to us in turning things around. I am determined to grow Nigeria out of poverty. We will stimulate the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as one of the ways of energising the economy and to create wealth for our people, especially the youth.

15. I want to see the youth play major roles at all levels, not only in government but also in the private sector and indeed in every area of Nigerian life. This will be a government driven by youthful energy, innovation and a pioneering entrepreneurial spirit. Nigerian youth will be given all the opportunities to realise their potential to the full within a national framework that guarantees inclusiveness. For youth who have ideas and capacity, we will make sure that there is funding for their ventures; and we shall build on the Made in Nigeria legislation as part of our job creation drive.

16. My plan is to secure Nigeria by redesigning our national security architecture, while adequately equipping our security agencies to fulfil their primary role of protecting lives and property.

17. I will address our infrastructural deficit through aggressive financing initiatives including mutually beneficial PPP arrangements, regular floating of bonds and other financial instruments, which will ensure stable, adequate and reliable funding to see to the completion of core projects especially road, rail and power.

18. My plan is to protect all Nigerians and defend their constitutional rights and freedoms. I will stand for and uphold at all times the principle of the rule of law, which is the bedrock of democratic governance.

19. Ours will not be a selective fight against corruption. The emphasis will be on strengthening institutions, with a particular focus on deterrence. We cannot afford to compromise our institutions with proxy wars against perceived political opponents. We see the fight against corruption as crucial to Nigeria’s economic development.

20. I offer leadership driven by empathy. Where leaders are responsive to the citizens. Where they know that government cares. We will not be indifferent or turn a blind eye to the real concerns of our people. Every single Nigerian life matters.

21. For me, the leadership we deserve is one that will be a source of pride to all Nigerians, one that will be respected and admired in Africa and around the world. It should be a leadership that can hold its own and stand tall anywhere in the world. That is the type of leadership I offer.

22. As a former two-term Governor and currently President of the Senate by the grace of God, I believe I possess a unique blend of executive and legislative experience to push for and implement reforms that will deliver real improvements in the daily lives of our people. I know what it takes to create jobs and grow the economy. I can make the tough decisions when it matters. I will spearhead a new agenda that can transform the lives of ordinary Nigerians in real terms.

23. Believe me when I say that it will not be business as usual. This will be a dynamic government of action that will pursue the growth of Nigeria with doggedness, determination and conviction. I will lead a result-driven administration. We shall set targets with clear timelines to ensure that anticipated deliverables are met. You can benchmark us and hold us accountable. In short, I assure you that I will deliver on all promises. What I envision is a new chapter in governance in this country. We will be driven by what is best for Nigerians.

25. I have deliberately chosen the opportunity of being here with you, my Number One constituency who I see as the future of our great country, to make my intention known. I believe the Nigerian youth are critical to rebuilding and growing the economy, and restoring our national pride.

26. I therefore ask you and all well-meaning Nigerians to join hands with me in this noble cause.

My brothers, My sisters, Let’s Grow Nigeria Together.

God bless you all.

As part of its resolve to fight crimes to its roots, the Delta State Police Command on Thursday arrested three suspected kidnappers who have been threatening top political personalities across the state, as well as high-profile pastors in Asaba and Ubulu-Uku communities in the state.

The Police Commissioner in the state, Mustafa Muhammad, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects to journalists in Asaba, said the suspects, Ariaka James, Ibori Philips, and Ekene Paul were arrested in Asaba and Ubulu-Uku by anti-kidnapping police team who acted on intelligence gathering in the early hours during its routine duty.

He said: “the suspects are helping the police at the State CID, and upon interrogation, they confessed to be members of a kidnap gang operating in the state”, adding that the police recovered from the suspects six cut-to-size guns and N600, 000.

He however stated that the arrested suspects would be charged to court upon completion of investigation.

Ronaldo’s overhead kick wins UEFA goal award

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning overhead bicycle kick for Real Madrid against current club Juventus has been voted UEFA’s goal of the season.

The former Real Madrid striker beat competition from 11 nominees for the award in honour of his goal in last season’s Champions League quarter-final first leg in Turin.

“Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Will never forget that moment, specially the reaction of the fans in the stadium,” the 33-year-old Portuguese superstar said on Twitter, using the hashtag #SpecialMoment.

Real Madrid were already leading against the Italian champions thanks to Ronaldo’s opener after just two minutes when he acrobatically blasted in Dani Carvajal’s cross on 64 minutes.

Ronaldo said it was “the best goal” of his career and it helped Real to a 3-0 win on the night and moved them a step closer to an eventual quarter-final victory over Juve. The Spanish club went on to win the competition for the third consecutive season.

The striker said the crowd’s reaction – a standing ovation from the Juventus fans – played a part in his decision to move to Turin in a 100 million-euro deal last month.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the all time top scorer in the Champions League with 120 goals.

Meanwhile, Portugal captain Ronaldo will skip his country’s next two internationals including a Nations League game against Italy in order to focus on his new club Juventus, Italian media reported on Wednesday.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Portugal’s all-time top goalscorer and skipper wants to make his new team the priority and will remain in Turin to be in top physical shape and to get to know his new teammates better.

The 33-year-old Ronaldo will reportedly miss a friendly against World Cup runners-up Croatia on September 6 and a Nations League game on September 10 against Italy.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner signed for Italian champions Juventus this summer from Real Madrid for 100 million euros.

Real Madrid re-sign Mariano Diaz after one season with Lyon

Mariano Diaz returned to Real Madrid on Wednesday after spending one season with Lyon, where he scored 21 goals.

Madrid exercised a clause that gave them the priority opportunity to bring back the 25-year-old, who signed a five-year contract until 2023.

Lyon confirmed Madrid would pay €30 million to bring back Mariano, plus €3m in potential bonuses, after selling him to Lyon for €8m a year ago. Lyon will also receive 15 percent of any future sale.

Mariano joined Madrid in 2012 from Badalona and rose up the ranks before making his debut against Celta Vigo under Zinedine Zidane during the 2016-17 campaign. He made 14 appearances for Madrid that season, with five goals in all competitions.

Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui reportedly called Mariano, who was said to be very close to a deal with Sevilla, to explain what was expected of him on his return to the club if he was interested.

Before the deal was announced, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed some details of the transfer, claiming that Madrid were not always interested in the player.

"Mariano told me he wanted to go to Madrid before passing on the Sevilla offer," Aulas said. "I told Florentino and he told me that he wasn't the player he was looking for. And then the offer came in."

Mariano will play as Karim Benzema's back-up, with Borja Mayoral moving down the pecking order again if he does not leave on loan.

"We decided, between the club, the coach and myself, that the best option for me was to leave to gain regular playing time, but I'll never close the door on Real Madrid," Mariano said in January.

Aulas said Lyon would look to sign a replacement before the transfer window ends on Friday and admitted interest in Celtic's Moussa Demebele and Lille's Nicolas Pepe.

Manchester United in discussions over new Anthony Martial contract

Manchester United are in discussions with Anthony Martial's representatives over a new long-term contract.

Martial, 22, has a year left on his present deal but United have the option to extend by a further season.

Earlier this summer Martial's agent said the France forward wanted to leave the club because of a lack of playing opportunities.

Tottenham made an inquiry, and it is understood that United manager Jose Mourinho was open to a deal.

Chelsea's Willian and Inter Milan's Ivan Perisic were being suggested as replacements.

His exit was blocked, however, with United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward believing Mourinho should get more out of him.

It is understood United want to sign the Frenchman for an additional five years.

A £36m signing from Monaco in 2015, Martial's only appearance so far this season was in the 3-2 defeat at Brighton on 19 August, when he was replaced after an hour.

He was not on the bench for Monday's 3-0 home defeat by Tottenham.

APC reacts to Kwankwaso’s declaration, Eagles Square, ICC ‘blockage’

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the inability of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso to use the Abuja International Conference Centre or the Eagles Square for his presidential declaration.

The former Kano Governor on Wednesday officially declared his presidential ambition.

The Senator is among aspirants seeking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.

His declaration which was held at Chida Hotel in Abuja attracted thousands of Kwankwasiya supporters and party members.

Reacting, APC condemned ”mischievous attempts in some quarters” to blame the party.

Yekini Nabena, APC National Publicity Secretary, in a statement said “the allegation is unnecessary and misplaced. We should not be dragged into a private transaction involving entities we have no business with.

“In any case, the 2019 elections will not be won by cheap campaign ground antics but actual votes from the Nigerian electorate who are wise and know who is working in their interest.

“Never again will we return governance of our dear country to the hands of those that selfishly have held us back for years.”

Kwankwaso: What Buhari has proved to Theresa May – Ben Bruce

Ben Murray-Bruce, the Senator representing Bayelsa East District in the National Assembly has said President Muhammadu Buhari has shown himself to UK Prime Minister Theresa May as someone who does not believe in democracy and rule of law.

Ben Bruce said this in reaction to the alleged report that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential aspirant, Rabiu Kwankwaso was prevented from using Eagles Square to declare his intention.

Emiratco had earlier reported that the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, yesterday claimed that the federal government had ordered the Police to seal off the Eagle Square, ahead of Kwankwaso’s official declaration to run for presidency.

The Federal Government’s action had since received condemnations from politicians, especially those in the opposition.

Speaking on the development, Ben Bruce on his Twitter page wrote: “The sad thing about denying Kwankwaso the venue is that it will only show visiting British Prime Minister, Theresa May that she is dealing with a regime that does not believe in democracy and the rule of law.

“What could Buhari have lost by allowing Kwankwaso use Eagles Square?”

He had impressed Rohr in a friendly game against Atletico Madrid, where he scored in the 3-2 defeat.

Four Akwa Ibom officials dragged to EFCC over alleged N184 million fraud

A marine company, Rock Marine Service Limited, has dragged four top officials of the Akwa Ibom State Government to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly swindling the firm of over N184.24 million.

The four top government officials allegedly indicted were: the State Commissioner for Transport and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Orman Esin, the Technical Assistant-Bureau of Technical Matters, Mr. Victor Akai, the Director of Administration, Ministry of Transport and Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ekerete Edo, and the Finance Consultant accredited by Bureau of Technical Matters, Mr. Idongesit Bassey.

In the petition entitled: “Obtaining N184, 235,450.89 by officials of Akwa Ibom State Government under the false pretence of concessioning Marine Terminal at Oron to Rock Marine Services Limited – a call for investigation,” the company urged the anti-graft agency to investigate the activity of the state government officials with regard to the abandoned Oron Jetty in Oron Local Government Area of the State.

The Managing Director, Rock Marine Services Ltd. Engr. Essien Elijah alleged that his interest to design, build, operate and maintain the Oron Marine Terminal as a concessionaire started since 2015, lamenting that up to the time of approaching the EFCC nothing was achieved after millions of Naira was spent.

He said his company has experienced untold loss in the process, adding that his partners were nursing the belief that he connived with the state government officials to defraud them.

“From our calculations and audit report the company has spent a total of N184 million through phony demands,” Elijah stated.

He lamented that due to debts incurred to finance the project; his financiers have lost faith in his company and have resorted to taking him to different police stations in Lagos and to the EFCC.

The counsel to Rock Marine Services Ltd., Barrister Ndifereke Akpan of Star Attorneys Chamber, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in the petition claimed that the syndicate have collected various sums of money under different pretences from his client.

“They deliberately led him on creating the impression that they were pursuing the business under reference only to call off same after collecting substantial sums of money from him”, and stated different roles played by different members of the syndicate and the amount collected by them.

Akpan, in the petition, alleged that “all the persons complained conspired together with the common intention of obtaining these various sums of money from our client under the false pretense of executing a project they had no intention of executing in the first place.”

He called on officials of the anti-graft commission to investigate the petition thoroughly with a view to recovering the monies obtained under false pretences and bring the culprits to justice, in accordance with the law.

It was learnt that the EFCC has begun investigation into the petition as the state government officials and the petitioners were guests of the anti-graft agency in the month of July.

One of the State Government officials, in his reaction, said that it was incumbent on the petitioner to prove his case and how such monies were paid to them including his competency of doing the project.

Meanwhile, efforts by EMIRATCO to get the reaction of the commissioner, Orman Esin failed as calls put across to his phone rang out.

2019: How Modu Sheriff intends to deceive Buhari, Oshiomhole – Ex-Deputy gov, Dibal

A former Deputy Governor of Borno State, Shettima Dibal, has alleged that an ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff defected back to the All Progressives Congress, APC, to manoeuvre President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Waziri of Biu claimed that Sheriff rejoined APC to manoeuvre Buhari and the party’s Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole into allowing him appoint the next governor of Borno State.

Dibal, who was the Deputy governor to Sheriff from 2003 to 2011, made the disclosure while speaking with The Nation.

According to Dibal, “I think Sheriff’s return to the APC has nothing to do with right or wrong. It was about his survival. He returned because he didn’t have any option and, like I said, he always wants to manoeuvre his way to the Presidency. But, then, politics is about growing numbers and whoever joins the APC is ordinarily a plus. However, it will depend on sincerity of purpose or the opposite.

“It is not rhetoric; it is rather a political antic that is calculated to manipulate and deceive President Muhammadu Buhari, the new National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the entire Presidency. What Sheriff wants is for the Presidency and the APC headquarters to make him the arrowhead of Buhari’s campaign in Borno State.

“By that, he will get some mileage, access to security and resources principally for him to anoint the next governor of Borno State. He is angry with those who didn’t follow him to the PDP before 2015 election and he wants the next governor to fight them.

“The same Sheriff said on January 24, 2015 during PDP presidential campaign in Maiduguri that he was going to ensure Buhari’s defeat in Borno State. He said Jonathan should hold him personally responsible if the PDP fails to win Borno State. Of course, the PDP lost woefully. I think if we are to even look at Buhari’s election record in Borno State from 2003 to date, I will say his best was in 2015.”

How I washed dead bodies for 10 years – Gov. Ajimobi

Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has said that he washed dead bodies as a youth to pay his tuition fees while schooling abroad.

Ajimobi said this yesterday at a South-West Youths Regional Summit in Osogbo.

The Governor, while urging the youth to have a positive mindset towards hard work, said he spent eight years abroad washing dead bodies to survive.

He said his parents only sent him 30 dollars all through his stay abroad, adding that he had to look for a way to survive.

“I left Nigeria in 1963 to study abroad, but throughout my stay there, I was washing dead bodies to support myself to go to school.

“When ever I got home from work, I will be weeping, remembering the number of dead bodies I washed.

“My boss at work then said I should not be afraid or fear, adding that such feeling is normal for first comers.

“He encouraged me to always see those dead bodies as iced fish.

“But against all odds, I survived and that is why I am urging youths to see hard work as the only way to success.

“I am saying this to challenge the youth of our next generation not to give up.

“This is our chance as youths and as Yorubas to come together to chart a successful pathway for the country.’’

Ajimobi, however, urged Yoruba leaders and governors to unite for the progress of the Yoruba race.

Trump vs Google: Firm replies US President’s rigging allegation

Google on Tuesday rejected President Donald Trump’s allegation that its search engines are rigged.

The US President had pointedly accused Google of bias, stating that mostly negative stories about him come up when his name is searched.

He tweeted: “Google search results for ‘Trump News’ shows only the viewing/reporting of Fake New Media.”

“In other words, they have it RIGGED, for me and others, so that almost all stories & news is BAD. Fake CNN is prominent.

“Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96 per cent of results on ‘Trump News’ are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous.

“Google and others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good.

“They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation – will be addressed!” Trump added.

As of Wednesday morning, the tweets have generated over 55,000 comments with most respondents condemning the president’s claim.

Reacting, Google declared that it does not control search results.

A statement released by the firm read: “When users type queries into the Google Search bar, our goal is to make sure they receive the most relevant answers in a matter of seconds.

“Search is not used to set a political agenda and we don’t bias our results toward any political ideology,” Efe quoted Google as saying in a statement.

“Every year, we issue hundreds of improvements to our algorithms to ensure they surface high-quality content in response to users’ queries.

“We continually work to improve Google Search and we never rank search results to manipulate political sentiment.”

US Government speaks on calling Buhari “lifeless”, what it expects in 2019 election

The United States Government has refused to comment or deny a statement credited to President Donald Trump, that Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari was “lifeless”, following a visit to the White House earlier this year.

Aruba Amirthanayagam, who is Counselor for Public Affairs, US Embassy, while speaking in Minna, Niger State on Tuesday during his visit to Zubair Idris, the Executive Director of Prestige FM Radio, said: “We have no specific comment on that, a newspaper published it, the paper should comment on it”.

Amirthanayagam also said that it will not take side in the Nigeria’s 2019 general election, saying it wants the winner to be elected in a free and fair contest.

“And we will do all we can to assist Nigeria’s government.

“The United States expects that the 2019 general elections will be free and transparent.

“I think we should repeat the success we had in the last election because we have had elections in some parts of Africa that have not gone well. What we got in 2015 was great for Nigeria and for the rest of Africa and other developing countries,” he said.

2023: Gang-up will not stop Igbo presidency – Ohanaeze youths

The leadership of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, Tuesday, declared that no form of gang-up would deny the South-East the opportunity of producing Nigeria’s President in 2023.

Emiratco reports that this is coming amid claims by the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki that the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu was positioning himself to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

This formed part of a communique issued by the OYC after its meeting, which was signed by Okwu Nnabuike, the Secretary General and Ado Osaka, the Deputy National Public Relations Officer.

They said any attempt to place the South-West above Ndigbo would be resisted.

They said the statement that “Ohanaeze Youths frown at the report that some cabal in the APC had perfected plans to return power to South West instead of South East immediately after President Buhari quits power.

“We still insist that the Presidency should refute such negative plot or it will make Ndigbo to consider other political options before them in 2019.

“We are aware that irrespective of INEC officials denying Igbos their constitutional rights in some parts of Nigeria to collect their PVCs in 2015 outside Igbo land, our voting strength in South west is equal to that of the indigenes, even in the North. We have more than 12 million registered Igbos in northern Nigeria and 5million Igbos in South West.”

They insisted that the APC had not fulfilled their political promises to the people of South East, which includes the campaign promise of President Buhari to revamp Enugu Coal mine. Iif APC continues to give priority to other zones more than South East, it may spell doom for them APC needs Ndigbo more than Ndigbo need them.”

“OYC insists that 2023 Igbo Presidency is not negotiable, and it’s our date with destiny and any maneuvering may spell doom to the unity of the country, as the recent unjust appointments since 2015 by the Presidency resulted to the rise of Biafra agitation, and those seeking Igbo votes in 2019 across Nigeria where Igbo reside must consider handing power to igbos for justice, equity and fairness in 2023.

“Those clamouring for restructuring should think twice as no Northern President will restructure a system that favours the north more than the Southerners.

“We support the single tenure of 6 years for President and Governors proposed by Senator Ike Ekweremadu; we believe it will help to unite Nigeria than divide us.

“OYC congratulates the Governor and the people of Abia State on their 27 anniversary since the creation of Abia in 1991 and insists that Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has what it takes to transform Abia.

“We observed that since 1999, Abia State has been unfortunate in governance, but since 2015, even with distraction from opposition, Governor Ikpeazu had performed more than any Governor that had governed Abia since 1999,” they further stated.

I remain accord party leader in South West – Okup

Former Presidential Adviser and Chieftain of the Accord Party, Dr Doyin Okupe has said he remains the leader of the party in the South west.

Okupe was reacting to a statement credited to some leaders of the party in the Southwest denouncing his leadership of the party in the zone.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Okupe who maintained that he is the authentic South West leader of the party, stated that the recognition was duly affirmed by party leaders through a vote of confidence passed on him.

“I remain the authentic leader of Accord Party in Southwest. There’s a letter from the National secretariat of the party authenticating this,” he said.

He described, as a charade, the meeting of some chieftains of the party led by the party’s National Secretary, Dr (Mrs) Adebukola Ajaja, in Ibadan.

Okupe said “Those present at the Ibadan meeting were APC moles working for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari. They are lightweight politicians whose presence in the Accord Party over the years has not added any substantial value to improve the fortune of the party.

“Whereas, the Iperu meeting where a vote of confidence was passed on my leadership, had in attendance all notable leaders of the party in the Southwest, except the Oyo and Ogun states Chairmen.

“The Ogun State chairman however sent his deputy to represent him and also apologised for his absence.”

The former presidential adviser also said “what is happening in the party presently is a desperate attempt by the National Chairman to use the party to promote the re-election bid of President Buhari.

“That is why the National Chairman is using the Secretary of the party as a stooge to destabilise the southwest zone of the party. It is on record that every notable personality in the party in Oyo state, including former Governor Rasheed Ladoja, all left the party over the way the party is being run by Ajaja doing the bidding of the National Chairman.

“The National Chairman, who is from Daura, the hometown of President Buhari dragged the National Assembly to court over election timetable, he claimed to have done that on behalf of Accord Party without the approval of the National Executive Committee of the party.

“He went further to employ the service of Senior Advocates of Nigeria for the case, paying them millions of naira when the party has no money in its coffers. When confronted on where he got the money, he confessed to have gotten the funding from the government.

“These are the characters presently parading themselves as leaders of the Accord Party, it is clear that they are more of political merchants who have nothing good to offer to position the party as a credible alternative and we are ready to restrict their plans to annex the party as a support group for President Buhari’s re-election,” he added.

Man United vs Tottenham: What Mourinho told his players at half-time before 3-0 thrashing

Manchester United defender, Luke Shaw has revealed what they were told by manager, Jose Mourinho during half time of their 3-0 loss to Tottenham on Monday night.

Shaw said he could not quite understand how United managed to let their performance level slip so much in the second half, with Mourinho full of praises for them at half-time.

Mourinho was delighted with United’s first-half display against Tottenham and told his players they were in total control at half-time, according to Shaw.

The Red Devils were unlucky not to take the lead at Old Trafford, as their first-half endeavour was undone by goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura in a clinical second half.

“You look at the first half, we were outstanding,” Shaw told MUTV.

“We had a lot of chances to put the game to bed. If we score, it’s game over.

“Second half, we spoke inside, Jose said ‘they haven’t had one corner, one cross, one dangerous opportunity.

‘Actually to be fair they did, a couple of times we made mistakes in the first half. But no corners, no crosses, nothing.’

“But first corner they get comes the goal. Even then maybe we should have been relaxed, it’s only one goal, we still had time.

“But then comes another mistake, another silly, stupid goal. We were so on top, so it’s really disappointing.

“Everyone in the dressing room is really sad, especially after the first half we had. Big thank you to the fans for the way they supported us, even when we were down 3-0 they were amazing.”

Lifeless president: Presidency speaks on Trump’s comment, foreign powers deciding Buhari’s re-election bid

The Presidency has said its not worried by the comment allegedly credited to the United States, US, President, Donald Trump about President Muhammadu Buhari.

Financial Times had reported that Trump after meeting with Buhari a few months ago, said he never wanted to meet someone as “lifeless” as Buhari again.

Reacting to the report, Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the presidency has no official position on the alleged comment.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, Adesina said the information was not ascribed to anybody, hence it is “not verified”.

“If it is unverified as it came out, then the presidency has no comment. It does not pass any concerns of good journalism,” he said.

On whether the comment would affect Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid, Adesina stressed that the statement was inconsequential.

“No, it won’t. Nigerians are the ones that would ultimately elect their president; no foreign power will determine who gets elected,” he said.

How we made Jonathan concede defeat to Buhari in 2015 – Abdusalami Abubakar

A Former military head of state, General Abdusalami Abubakar (retd), has revealed the process that led to former President Goodluck Jonathan conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

The former military leader made the disclosure at the 2018 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, yesterday.

Abdulsalami said that the genesis of Africa’s political problems was “the action of its sit-tight leaders, who amend the constitution in order to perpetuate themselves.”

“These leaders have the tendency to manipulate very vital democratic organs, particularly the legislature and, sometimes, the judiciary, to suppress any dissenting voice.

“Despite all these, Africa is now harvesting an influx of leaders and politicians. The young people who are emerging are more educated and internationally exposed than the current old leaders we have all over Africa.

“And these young men and women are trying to make their marks. However, as you know, they are hampered by the high cost of electioneering in developing countries and, indeed, the world,” he said.

General Abubakar, gave a keynote address on “Political transitions in Africa: Lessons to learn.”

He gave credit to Jonathan for not only conceding defeat, but for congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari who was a candidate of the opposition party.

He added, “All analyses of political trend in the run up to Nigeria’s 2015 general elections pointed to above scenario playing out. Very early on, I teamed up with some well-meaning non-partisan stakeholders and elder statesmen to engage the key contestants and party leaders with a view to forestalling such a scenario.

“Under the auspices of a peace initiative, we brokered an agreement with leading contestants, in form of a Memorandum of Understanding, for them to accept the outcome of the elections, preach cordiality in relations and conduct peaceful campaigns.

“It is gratifying to note that, courtesy of our humble effort and the goodwill extended to it by the contestants and the Nigerian public, the 2015 national elections were conducted peacefully.”

“To his eternal credit, the then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost the polls had the magnanimity to concede defeat and congratulate the candidate of the opposition party. In the end, peace, amity and political stability prevailed in the land.”
