Minimum wage: NLC issues December 31 deadline to FG

Minimum wage: NLC issues December31 deadline to FGThe organised labour has given the Federal Government up to December 31 to send the tripartite committee report on N30,000 minimum wage to the National Assembly following a decision that was taken in Lagos on Thursday at a joint meeting of three labour centres—the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the United Labour Congress (ULC).   Labour said the ultimatum followed President Buhari’s statement that a “high powered technical committee” would be set up to device ways of ensuring that the implementation of the new wage did not lead to an increase in the level of borrowing.   NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, who addressed newsmen after the meeting, said that setting up a technical committee could not be a condition for passing the minimum wage report to the National Assembly. According to Wabba, the organised labour cannot guarantee industrial peace and harmony in the country if the wage report was not passed for implementation on or before December 31.  “We reject in its entirety the plan to set up another `high powered technical committee’ on the minimum wage. It is diversionary and a delay tactics. The national minimum wage committee was both technical and all-encompassing in its compositions and plan to set up a technical committee is alien to the tripartite process. It is also alien to the  International Labour Organisations’ conventions on national minimum wage setting mechanism,’’ he said.  The labour leader said that issues on payment of minimum wage was a law that was universal, citing that other African countries like, Kenya, Ghana and South Africa had increased their minimum wage this year

Sowore sues NEDG/BON, asking the court to stop Presidential debate from holding without him

Sowore sues NEDG/BON, asking thecourt to stop Presidential debate from holding without himThe African African Congress (AAC) has filed a lawsuit against the Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) over the exclusion of its presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, from the presidential debate. A statement by Malcolm Fabiyi, Director General of the TakeItBack Movement and Sowore 2019 Campaign, noted that the lawsuit was filed on Wednesday. The suit, filed by Barrister Inibehe Effiong, the AAC Legal Adviser, asked the court to prevent the debate from going ahead without AAC. It also asked the court to compel the NEDG/BON to explain why the party was excluded from the debate.   Speaking on why the party instituted a case against NEDG and BON, Fabiyi said: "The Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG), in association with the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria and Channels TV, has been resolute in its discrimination against Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate for the African Action Congress. Despite being one of the top three parties in polls and surveys, the NEDG fraudulently excluded the AAC and selected other parties for the debate. The NEDG has cited multiple excuses for its discriminatory refusal to include the AAC. None of those excuses hold water."The nation is aware by now that the AAC party and the Take it Back Movement will not take injustice, discrimination or oppression lightly. We do not accept it when meted out to innocent Nigerians as we have shown in various protests, and we certainly will not accept it against ourselves or our efforts."This lawsuit should not only help ensure that the right of all Nigerians to have an authentic, unfiltered debate about the Nigeria’s future is assured, it would also serve notice to all those who hide behind legitimate institutions and organizations to perpetuate the oppression and the drowning out of legitimate voices from national discourse, that their days of impunity are over."We hope that the Nigerian judicial system will show itself to be strong, virile and independent as this case makes it way through the courts. Nigeria MUST progress."

It however turned out to be false. When the charge was read to him, he did not waste the time of the Court as he pleaded “guilty”. Justice Jauro, thereafter, convicted and sentenced him to one year in prison with an option of N20, 000 fine. In a related development, the EFCC secured the conviction of Abubakar Umar and Nafiu Ibrahim for offences bordering on conspiracy and cheating. Umar and Ibrahim were arraigned before Justice Jauro on a two-count charge. They allegedly defrauded Hadiza Bajoga and Rakiya Yakubu of about N4 million. The EFCC had received a petition from his victims. Subsequently, an investigation was launched into the alleged crime, which led to their arrest in Kano State. One of the counts reads: “That you Abubakar Ahmed Umar and Nafiu Ibrahim sometime in December 2017 or thereabout at Gombe, Gombe State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did fraudulently induce one Hadiza Yakubu to deliver to you monies totalling the sum of N4,000,000 (Four Million Naira Only) on WhatsApp group chat, under the name "Success Oil & Gas" and that the said sum was to be used for investing in Oil and Gas business which you knew same to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 and Punishable under Section 322 of the Penal Code Law”. They pleaded “guilty” to the charges when they were read to them. Based on their pleas, prosecuting counsel, Zarami Muhammad, asked the court to convict them accordingly

London's Gatwick airport shuts down for over 20-hours after strange sightings of unknown drones

London's Gatwick airport shuts down for over 20-hours after strange sightings of unknown dronesThe United Kingdom's second-biggest airport has been closed for more than 19 hours in an unprecedented disruption caused by drone sightings, which police have described as a "deliberate act."   London's Gatwick Airport has been closed since 9 p.m. on Wednesday Dec 19th after drones were spotted near the airfield and as at Thursday afternoon, police were still on the hunt for the drone operators who have brought the airport to a standstill, causing travel chaos for hundreds of thousands of passengers just days before Christmas. "Each time we believe we get close to the operator, the drone disappears; when we look to reopen the airfield, the drone reappears," Sussex Police Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw told the UK's Press Association. The Ministry of Defence said on Thursday evening that it had deployed specialist equipment to assist Sussex Police in their efforts. It is illegal to fly drones within 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) of a UK airfield boundary, with perpetrators facing up to five years in prison. There is no indication the incident at Gatwick is terror-related, local Sussex Police said adding that 20 police units from two forces were searching for the drone operators.

We will not denuclearize until the US eliminates its own "nuclear threat" - North Korea says

North Korea has said it will not relinquish its nuclear weapons until the US eliminates its own "nuclear threat," according to a commentary published by state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).   "The proper definition of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is completely eliminating the American nuclear threat to North Korea before eliminating our nuclear capability," the commentary says. The US and North Korea are deadlocked in negotiations over how North Korea will denuclearize in return for the easing of sanctions. On June 12 in Singapore, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump signed a vaguely worded pledge to "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula." However, in the six months since, talks have stalled and North Korean criticism of the US has sharpened, though Pyongyang has continued to heap praise on Trump. The commentary published Thursday suggests one obstacle in the negotiations could be US military assets based in South Korea and the protection of South Korea under the US nuclear umbrella."When talking about the Korean peninsula, it encompasses not only our republic's territory but also South Korea where the American nuclear weapons and armed forces for invasion are spread out. When talking about denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, [the US] needs to know that it means eliminating all nuclear threat factors," the commentary says. The statement also says the US push toward the total denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula should include the removal of nuclear threats from "not only the North and the South, but from all neighboring areas."

Photo: Househelp who stole employer's car, $5000 and other valuables eleven days after employment, nabbed

The police in Lagos state have arrested one Ben Peters, a househelp that carted away his employers valuables eleven days after employment. Ben was employed by seventy-three-year-old retiree, Alexander Okoye, and his wife, Njideka Okoye, on October 12th.However on October 24th 2018, the suspect stole the couples valuables including their Toyota Camry saloon car 2008 model, five thousand United States Dollars, six packet shirts and a Motorola Android phone. The distraught couple filed a petition to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos state, CP Edgal Imohimi. Based on their complaint, the CP directed CSP Kemi Adedeji and team attached to the Command's Human rights section to launch a manhunt for the fleeing househelp. On Tuesday December 12th, the said Ben Peters was arrested at his hideout in Agege, Lagos and some of the stolen items recovered from him. Police investigation revealed that the suspects real name is Usang Bassey Effiong and not Ben Peters as he made his employers to believe. Confessing to the crime, the suspect narrated that he noted where Mr. Okoye usually hid his bedroom key and to gain access to it, he needed to duplicate the living room key; so he went ahead and made a copy of the living room key.  He said on October 23rd, he made up his mind to break into the couple's bedroom. And to do so undetected, he disconnected the CCTV camera that would have recorded his activities, picked up the bedroom key and constructively broke into the couple's room, stole their valuables and thereafter, drove off with their car.The suspect added that robbing the couple was easy for him because the househelp they dismissed before employing him, one Matthew Johnson Abam,  was a member of his thieving  syndicate and he had furnished him with relevant information about the couple even before he came to live with them. Both suspects are currently undergoing interrogation with a view to helping the Police, arrest their partners in crime and recover the stolen items.

We have also deployed patrol vehicles, advanced life support ambulances, heavy duty trucks,  patrol motorbikes, reflective jackets, and breathalyzers among others,” he said.He explained that the measures were all in a bid to make sure that the roads were accident-free. Kazeem further said the corps’ objectives during the festive period included ensuring free flow of traffic, reduction of crashes to the barest minimum and quick response to distress. “We want a situation where people will be moving freely without any hitch and in a situation where  we have any crash; there should be quick response to distress situation. There will also be enforcement of road traffic laws and regulations because education and enlightenment without enforcement is just like entertainment. So many people will not heed our call and we have to enforce the law and make sure they heed our call by all means,” he said.  He further said no fewer than 201 mobile courts had been set up nationwide meaning that some people might eventually spend their Christmas behind bars. The public education officer said the corps had employed patrol strategies including having 24 hours visibility along 52 critical corridors and conduct of mobile courts. “We also have 13 traffic control camps at traffic prone areas for ease of operation and quick response to traffic issues,” said Kazeem, and that the camps were located in Lagos, Mowe, Lokoja, Gwagwalada, Ore, Okene among others.
