Illegal adoption of children will land you in jail - NAPTIP

Illegal adoption of children will land you in jail - NAPTIPThe National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has warned Nigerians against illegal adoption of children. The Director-General of NAPTIP, Ms Julie Okah-Donle, issued the caution in a statement on Friday in Abuja while reacting to the recent conviction of five men in Makurdi for adoption of a four-year-old boy.Okah-Donle advised anyone intending to adopt a child to go through the legal processes in order to avoid falling foul of the law or causing another parent severe emotional and mental pain. The NAPTIP boss who condemned the abduction of children expressed concern on the pains that parents whose children were abducted could be going through.According to her, under Sections 13 (2), 21, and 27 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration (TIPPEA) Act, 2015, it is a crime to abduct, transport, receive or harbour a victim of human trafficking.“The law also prohibits the purchase, sale, hiring or taking possession of any person with intent, knowing it to be likely or having reasons to know that such a person will be subjected to exploitation as well as any conspiracy to commit any offence under the Act,”  she quoted the lawOn the convicted men in Makurdi, the statement listed the accused persons as Adejo Ogiri, Afonne Nwokocha, Ndukwe Henry and Obuito Onyema.According to the statement,  they were sentenced by the Federal High Court in Makurdi for abducting a four-year-old boy. They were arrested by officers of the Department of State Services for the abduction and attempted sale of the victim and handed over to the NAPTIP.The statement noted that the first accused (Ogiri) abducted his neighbour’s child from Otukpo and took him to Umuahia, Abia state, where he handed him over to the second accused, Uzochukwu. It further noted that Uzochukwu took the child to the third convict (Edward), who had a client, Augustina, still at large, whom they intended to sell the child to.“While waiting for the client to pick up the child, they kept him with the fourth accused person, who is a relative of the client.“Edward was arrested by the Directorate of State Security Service (DSS) as he went to the bank to withdraw the money earlier sent by the client.“The DSS thereafter, rescued the child, arrested and handed the suspects over to NAPTIP for further investigation and prosecution.“In the course of trial which lasted between September 2016 and May 2018, the presiding Judge found the acts committed by the accused persons despicable.“Based on the evidences tendered by the prosecution, found them guilty and subsequently sentenced them accordingly.“Convicted under Sections 13 (2)(a), 21 and 27 of TIPPEA ACT, 2015, Ogiri was sentenced to two years and five years’ imprisonment, respectively, on each count.“The fourth and fifth accused persons were sentenced to five years imprisonment, each, while the second and third accused persons, who jumped bail in the course of the trial, will be sentenced when caught,” the statement noted.Okah-Donle lauded the collaborative efforts of the DSS in the arrests and course of the trial. She identified partnership as one of the five-pronged approaches employed by NAPTIP in combating human trafficking, adding that fight against human trafficking will be more impactful when law enforcement agencies work together.

Sanwo-Olu will not abandon on-going projects in Lagos - Governor Ambode says

Sanwo-Olu will not abandon on-going projects in Lagos - Governor Ambode saysLagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has assured that the Governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State for the 2019 general elections, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu will not abandon ongoing projects but rather complete and build on the enduring legacies already put in place by his administration. Governor Ambode, who said this while inaugurating an ultra modern lecture theatre donated to the Lagos State University (LASU) by businessman and philanthropist, Mr Remi Makanjuola, said while efforts were on to complete all the major projects initiated by his administration, Sanwo-Olu would nonetheless complete those ones he is unable to deliver before the expiration of his tenure next year.“I am so excited about the fact that Mr Sanwo-Olu has actually come out here and he has issued a promissory note and what that mean is that we are going to have a government of continuity. For whatever structures that we have in LASU right now, and I’m going to also convince our chief negotiator, Dr Wale Babalakin, we are already doing Senate building here, we are doing Students Arcade and we are also doing the Library, I hope I will be able to complete and finish them but if I am unable to complete them, I speak on behalf of Mr Sanwo-Olu that he will finish and also do the Staff School. We are not campaigning yet but truly that is the spirit of the kind of governance that we bring to Lagos; that is the spirit that we really want to see and then we should be able to show leadership in all spheres of life that we find ourselves,” Governor Ambode said.Speaking on his administration’s intervention in the educational sector, he said in the last three and half years, at least N15billion has been invested in revamping infrastructure in schools across the State to ensure students can learn in a conducive environment, while 3,400 primary and secondary teachers were employed to improve the teacher to student ratio as well as quality of learning in schools.

Nigerian Army reacts to viral video showing how Boko Haram killed several soldiers in Borno State

Nigerian Army reacts to viral videoshowing howBoko Haram kills several soldiers in Borno StateThe Nigerian Army has issued an official statement to address the viral video making rounds on social media that shows soldiers complaining bitterly about their obsolete weapons as Boko Haram killed 100 of their colleagues. While the Army didn't specify the number of soldiers that died in the attack, the statement said, 'publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion'. See the full statement below...1. The attention of the NA has been drawn to several social media, print, electronic and online publications about the recent attack on 157 Task Force Battalion at Metele. Whilst it is true that there was an attack on the location on 18 November 2018, it has however, become necessary to correct several misinformation being circulated with regards to this unfortunate event.2. It is important for the public to note that the NA has laid down procedures for reporting incidents that involve its personnel who fall casualty in action. Out of respect for the families of our gallant troops, the NOKs are first notified before any form of public information so as to avoid exacerbating the grief family members would bear, were they to discover such from unofficial sources.3. Furthermore, it suffices to observe that several social media, print and online publications have been brandishing false casualty figures as well as circulating various footages of old and inaccurate BHT propaganda videos and alluding same to be the attack on 157 Task Force Battalion. Whilst it is understandable how such misinformation can spread in this era of social media frenzy, the spurious circulation of some of these videos only contribute to further propagate the propaganda intent of the terrorists; to misinform the populace and portray themselves as what they are not. So far, the situation is that the location is under control as reinforcing units have been able to repel the terrorists and stabilize the situation.4. The NA sincerely, wishes to thank the various arms of government, MDAs and sister security agencies that have stood with her in these trying times; by commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes who have paid the supreme price for the defence of our dearly beloved country. The necessary support being given the NA by the Federal Government and the goodwill of the Nigerian populace will undoubtedly continue to spur the NA towards the ultimate defeat of the highly degraded BHTs.5. This is for your information please.

Three brothers arrested for kidnapping their church member's daughter in Ondo State

Three brothers arrested for kidnapping their church members daughter in Ondo StateThree brothers Joy Ramond, 19, Peace Ramond, 24, and Ayomide Ramond, 16, as well as their suspected accomplice, Akinseye Oluwayomi, 18, have been arrested for kidnaping the 6-year-old daughter of their Church member. The members of Jehovah Witness Church, Oba-Ile in Akure, Ondo State, were arrested after one Afolabi Oladapo reported the matter on Nov. 21. Oladapo reported that his daughter, Jamama, was kidnapped during Church service by unknown people. She was however, released on November 22, after the payment of N720,000. Shortly after the payment of the ransome, a team of policemen stormed the venue where the ransom was paid and rounded up the four suspects while exhuming the money that had been buried in an uncompleted building. Speaking to newsmen, Joy, one of the siblings, confirmed that the victim was a daughter of their Church’s member, but claimed that they took her home “to warn and scare her, and not to kidnap her”.“I have always seen the girl running out of the Kingdom Hall whenever we are having our meeting; that day, I was coming from my working place and saw her outside the hall around 7 p.m.I asked her where she was going to, and warned her to be careful so as not to be kidnapped. I later decided to take her home from where I called the parents to inform them that the girl was with me.That particular night I could not reach the parents on phone, but I got them the next morning and the mother came to pick the girl. I decided to scare her because I learned that she is the only girl in the family and was being pampered by the parents.I kept her to scare her so as to discourage her from straying around. It may be another person that called them and fabricated the kidnap story so as to dupe them,” she claimed.

2019: Buhari, Atiku, Ezekwesili, Donald Duke, must step down for me Rev Chris Okotie says

Senior Pastor of the Household of God Church and presidential candidate of Fresh Party, has asked President Buhari, Atiku Akububakr, Oby Ezekwesili, Donald Duke and other presidential candidates, to step down for him so he can set up an Interim National Government come May 2019. In an interview with DailyTrust, Okotie who declared his interest to run for president in 2019 on October 1st, says an interim government is the only way out for Nigeria to develop. Read excepts from the interview below Daily Trust: In recent times, you have been speaking on what you believe is the need for Nigeria to have an Interim National Government (ING). What exactly is the proposition all about?Reverend Okotie: What I am saying is that the current arrangement in the political hemisphere is not workable because the political class has refused to recognise the seriousness of the existential adversary that confronts us at this time. We are at a juncture in our national evolution where we must come to a halt temporarily and have an ad hoc measure, which is the Interim National Government, to deal with the fundamental issues that beset our nation, and to restructure and change the Constitution. No extant government can do these things. That’s what I’m saying.DT: Doesn’t your idea render the Fresh Party’s presidential ticket, which you have been given, useless?Okotie: Yes, I already have the Fresh Party’s presidential ticket, and that means we shall be participating in the presidential election slated for February 2019. But what I am saying is that all other parties should not field candidates against me in the 2019 presidential election so that it would be easy for me to set up the Interim National Government. If they don’t field candidates, it means I have won and what I’d do immediately is set up an ING instead of the normal or ordinary government that is put in place, where we have the legislature, judiciary and all of that that is not workable. An interim government will not need a legislature and it is at this time that we can redesign the political landscape.DT: Would you be executing this idea on the platform of the Fresh Party?Okotie: I have to run for election on the platform of a political party. After the election has been held, the creation of the Interim National Government is another step.DT: How do you think this would work out during the election?Okotie: Since it would be based on consensus, it would be based on the reality of the time. By the time the 2019 election holds, I am sure we shall be coming to a point to realise that the only way forward is to have a paradigm shift, and that has to be the ING.DT: But many have argued that the ING idea is not recognized by the Nigerian Constitution. How do you hope to navigate the legal challenge?Okotie: That is totally irrelevant. The Constitution was created by men. It can be suspended and we can put an ad hoc mechanism in place to legalise the machinery of an interim government. It can be done. It is not impossible.DT: In the proposed ING, you offer yourself as the person to lead the arrangement. How acceptable do you think your offer would be to other political stakeholders?Okotie: That would be predicated on the reality of that day. When this whole sequence had played itself out, it would become obvious that there was no other way forward. There is no partisan political equilibrium that can salvage Nigeria at this juncture of our national evolution because the problems that confront us are gargantuan.DT: So how prepared are you to deal with these gargantuan problems?Okotie: I am very prepared. If you notice, all these years, I have not engaged in any political participation at any level because my political philosophy is quite different. The ideology that I believe in is diametrically opposed to that of the status quo.  And that is why I have not been part of APC, PDP or any other national party.DT: You are a pastor, so how do you hope to drive your message to non-Christians?Okotie: We will drive the message when there is a national platform in place, which is the ING. Yes, we must rise above the issues of religion and ethnicity. I have assumed an altitude where these cleavages diminish to mere superficial laceration in the terrain of national integration. But it can only be advocated on a national platform that is recognizable.DT: If your idea works out, what would be your area of focus when you lead the ING?Okotie: First and foremost, we must redesign our Constitution. That is clear. This Federalism that we run is what I call terminological inexactitude. It is a lie. It’s a deceit. This is not federalism; it’s more like a unitary government. When you look at its centrifigure, you will discover that there is disequilibrium. We need to address the problem of ethnicity and how that plays out in our polity, and then work on reconciliation. There is a need to restructure our nation.

APC sues INEC over its political crisis in Zamfara State

APC sues INEC over its political crisis in Zamfara StateThe All Progressives Congress, APC, has sued the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, seeking an order to allow its candidates to participate in the forthcoming general elections in Zamfara State.   In the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the party further applied for an order of perpetual injunction to restrain INEC from giving effect to the content of a letter with Reg. No. lNEC/SEC/654/1/330 and dated October 9, which foreclosed it from presenting candidates in Zamfara for failing to conduct its primaries within the stipulated time.   The court has fixed December 11 to commence hearing on the matter.  Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu okayed the case for hearing on Friday after she joined the governorship aspirant of APC in the state, Senator Garba Marafa and a senatorial aspirant, Alhaji Siraju, as well as seven other chieftains of the party, as defendants in the suit.  APC, in the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1279/2018, prayed the court to declare that INEC’s letter purporting to exclude the party from presenting and submitting the list of its candidates for the forthcoming election in Zamfara state scheduled for 2019, is null, void, ultra vires and of no effect having regards to the provisions of sections 31(1) and 86(2), (3) and (4) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).   “A declaration that by virtue of section 36(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and section 31(1) of the Electoral Act (as amended), the defendant lacks the power to refuse to collect the name of the plaintiff’s candidates for Zamfara state presented and to be submitted to it not later than 60 days before the election scheduled for February 2019″.

Governor Shettima has a lot of questions to answer on Boko Haram tragedy - Goodluck Jonathan

Governor Shettima has a lot of questions to answer on Boko Haram tragedy - Goodluck JonathanFormer President Goodluck Jonathan has challenged Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima to offer plausible explanations “for the ignoble roles he played in worsening the Boko Haram tragedy in his home state.”   This is coming as some concerned Borno State stakeholders are calling on Shettima to account for how he has been managing the state’s finances and the expenditure on Internally Displaced Persons for almost eight years.     In statement issued yesterday by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, in response to criticism of his book (My Transition Hours) by Shettima, the former president said in the past four years, the Borno governor had been living in denial, “towing an evasive path he has cleverly beaten for himself. What he may not know is that he is only walking the path of a villain.”   In another statement issued by Reno Omokri on his behalf, Jonathan told the Buhari administration to leave him alone and face Transparency International, that reported that Nigeria was more corrupt today than under the last Peoples Democratic Party’s government.   On the Borno governor, Jonathan was quoted as saying:“On Wednesday Nigerians were treated to a noisy but feeble defence by Borno Governor Kashim Shettima who, only ended up showcasing a jaded ritual of chest-thumbing, rather than offer plausible explanations for the ignoble roles he played in worsening the Boko Haram tragedy in his home state. In the past four years, he has been living in denial, towing an evasive path he has cleverly beaten for himself. What he may not know is that he is only walking the path of a villain.  Once demand is made on him to explain why he deliberately ignored both the directive of both the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for Governors to keep candidates in the affected locations out of harm’s way by relocating them to safer areas for their exams, he goes asking for the release of the report of Gen. Ibrahim Sabo-led facts-finding committee set up by President Jonathan.”

They promised to give good money before sex, but after, they give peanuts.” The lovers ran into stormy water after one of their victims, Danti, paid the sum of N150k. The lovers later returned, asking for additional N300k. They further threatened to abduct Danti’s wife and children if he didn’t give them the N300k. Sick to his stomach with fear, Danti wrote a petition to IGP, Ibrahim Idris, detailing his predicament. Idris quickly acted on the petition by instructing IRT operatives to investigate the case and arrest the blackmailers. The phone used in the blackmail was recovered and over 30 pictures of naked men were found on it.

Jubril From Sudan’ Fake Buhari Rumours: Presidency Orders DSS To Go After Facebook User

Okoi Obono-Obla, the special assistant to the president on prosecution, has written to the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police seeking the probe of an alleged peddler

of false claim of the death of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Acknowledgment copies of the separate letters addressed to the Director General of the DSS, Mr. Yusuf Bichi, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, were obtained by

The PUNCH on Tuesday, November 20, 2018.

Copies of the letters dated November 14, 2018, were received at both the DSS and Police Force Headquarters in Abuja on November 6, 2018.

Obono-Obla, whose office is domiciled in the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, specifically informed the heads of the security agencies in his petitions that one Bishop

Eze Orieke made the false claim with purported documents from the London Bridge Hospital (Regional Medical Laboratory) to back it on the wall of a Facebook group called Ohafia

Political Forum.

The said documents are attached herewith for your attention and consideration,” the letter reads in part.

“It is a notorious fact and incontrovertible proof that his excellency, Muhammadu Buhari is not dead but very much alive and kicking.”

He added that the post on Facebook and the documents attached to it by the said Orieke “are fake and calculated to cause panic, disaffection and undermine national security.”

Copies of the documents, which were allegedly attached to the Facebook post and which Obono-Obla forwarded with his petitions to the security agencies, included a purported death certificate issued by the National Population Commission indicating that Buhari died of cardiac arrest in Abuja on September 19, 2017.

“It is ill-motivated, distasteful and made in extreme bad faith,” Obono-Obla said of the documents in his petitions.

According to him, the act violated the provisions of section 24(1)(a),(b) and (2)(a),(b),(c)(i),(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition & Prevention etc) Act, 2015.

Offences under the said provision carry between three to 10 years imprisonment with or without fines ranging between N7 million and N15 million.
“In the light of the above, I respectfully urge you to investigate this matter,” Obono-Obla stated.
Our correspondent’s search of the Facebook accounts of both Bishop Eze Orieke and the Ohafia Political Forum did not yield a positive result.

Also, repeated attempts to contact the said Orieke through a phone number supplied in the petitions as his were also futile.

The repeated calls made to the telephone line indicated that the contact could not be reached.

The legal provisions which the suspect allegedly flouted according to Obono-Obla include, “(1) 24. (1) Any person who knowingly or intentionally sends a message or other matter by means of computer systems or network that-
“(a) is grossly offensive, pornographic or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character or causes any such message or matter to be so sent; or

(b) he knows to be false, for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, ill will or needless anxiety to
another or causes such a message to be sent: commits an offence under this Act and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not more than N7 million or imprisonment for a term of not more than three years or to both such fine and imprisonment.”

“(2) Any person who knowingly or intentionally transmits or causes the transmission of any communication through a computer system or network –

“(a) to bully, threaten or harass another person, where such communication places another person in fear of death, violence or bodily harm or to another person.”

“(b) containing any threat to kidnap any person or any threat to harm the person of another, any demand or request for a ransom for the release of any kidnapped person, to extort from
any person, firm, association or corporation, any money or other thing of value; or

“(c) containing any threat to harm the property or reputation of the addressee or of another or the reputation of a deceased person or any threat to accuse the addressee or any other

person of a crime, to extort from any person, firm, association, or corporation, any money or other thing of value: commits an offence under this Act and shall be liable on conviction-

“(i) in the case of paragraphs (a) and (b) of this subsection to imprisonment for a term of 10 years and/or a minimum fine of N25,000,000.00;

“(d) of this subsection, to imprisonment for a term of five years and/or a minimum fine of N15 million.”

What Buhari Said About Jonathan’s New Book ‘My Transition Hours’

President Muhammadu Buhari did not mince words in extolling the “statesmanship and sportsmanship” of his immediate predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, at the launch of the
former president’s new book titled ‘My Transition Hours’ on Tuesday.

President Buhari, who at the book launch was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, foretold that Jonathan will rise again as his

best days were still ahead.

The President lauded Jonathan for the singular act of relinquishing power to him after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that he had lost the election to

him. Buhari also said with the launch of ‘My Transition Hours’, Nigerians, historians and scholars can now have a first-hand account of what transpired during the 2015 election.

“I want to openly as I have done on several occasions salute the statesmanship, sportsmanship and courage embodied in the person of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who in 2015

without any pressure willingly conceded victory to me even when collation of result was still in progress,” said Buhari.

“Your Excellency, your singular act of placing a call to me doused and calmed frayed nerves all over the country and I sincerely thank you for being a true democrat and a patriotic

Nigerian,” he said.

President Buhari also praised Jonathan for standing by his word that no blood of any Nigerian was worth what he wanted from politics.

He said, “To underscore his desire for peace and nonviolence, Jonathan kept reiterating that no Nigerian blood should be shed for his ambition. With this book being launched today

(yesterday), Nigerians, historians and scholars now have a first-hand account and an insight into what transpired during the transition hours.

“It is difficult for any citizen to imagine what went through the mind of Dr. Jonathan during those lonely lone hours when varieties of counsels for and against were being offered.
History has recorded your time as Nigerian’s fifth democratically elected leader since independence. History will judge you well as a patriotic leader.

“That underscores the reason why this administration amongst others remains committed to the service of the nation by completing even projects started by the first dispensation of

the current dispensation,” he said.

“In approximately 88 days from today Nigerians will be exercising their civic duty of electing new leaders in another general elections. I call on all political leaders to see elections as a

contest based on principles, programmes and aspirations that will uplift the nation. Elections should never become a declaration of war, rather it should cement our brotherliness and

nationhood,” said the president.
