It challenges you to hear their stories and to realize that their stories are nothing like the stereotypes you are carrying in your head. I feel very grateful for this workshop for educating me.  Sam Onyemelukwe, Managing Director of Trace TV and Venator Partners Ltd stated that the organisation is very pleased to partner with Chimamanda for changing the narratives about Nigeria and Africa in the mainstream media as well as the stereotypes associated with women and writing as a profession.  He added that Trace’s core mission to entertain, enlighten, and educate youths, informed their partnership with the writer.

Men's penises can become significantly smaller because of chemical in non-stick frying pans

Researchers have revealed that a man's penis could be significantly shorter and thinner because of non-stick frying pans.Scientists recently made a link between the size of a man's penis and cooking utensils used by their parents to prepare food which they ate. They found that high levels of a chemical called PFCs(perfluoroalkyl compounds) that are used in non-stick frying pans can interfere with male hormones and make men's penises to be "significantly" smaller. PFCs, which appear to reduce levels of testosterone, are also found in greaseproof packaging and waterproof clothes. The issue is also said to affect teenagers who are still developing. The research, carried out at the University of Padua in Italy and published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found men from areas with high levels of PFC pollution had penises that were 12.5 per cent shorter and 6.3 per cent thinner. They measured 383 penises of men around the age of 16 to 22 who grew up in an affected area of Italy near the University and 171 from elsewhere.A river was polluted as a result of run-off from a chemical factory and water treatment plant. Men in this area had significantly smaller penises than men in areas with low levels of PFCPadua is one of four areas with high levels of PFC pollution as well as West Virginia in the US, Dordrecht in the Netherlands, and Shandong in China. It is believed that PFCs bind to testosterone receptors, reducing the male sex hormone in the body. But it’s not just the size of the penis that is affected. PFC also makes sperm less healthy and mobile as well as creating a smaller distance between the scrotum and anus.Lead researcher Dr Andrea Di Nisio said:As the first report on water contamination of PFCs goes back to 1977, the magnitude of the problem is alarming. It affects an entire generation of young individuals, from 1978 onwards. Previous studies linked PFCs to other health problems including early menopause and bladder cancer. They are absorbed in the intestines from eating, drinking and breathing them in and can be toxic to foetuses.Dr Di Nisio said the problem will continue until PFCs are banned.Below are other products where PFC can be found:Fast food packagingPaper platesStain-resistant carpetsWindshield washing fluidFire-fighting foamWaterproof clothingSome gluesCosmeticsMedicinesElectronicsCleaning productsPolishes and waxesInsecticides and paints

Goldcoast Dickson: Foundation Buries patroness; as family announces burial schedule

Goldcoast Development Foundation, a Bayelsa based nonprofit is set to bury her patroness, Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson who passed away on the 8th of August 2018 at the age of 72. Mrs. Goldcoast; fondly known as Mama Gogo, was a visionary and selfless mother to many, in whose legacy the foundation was founded to positively impact the lives of rural women and children of communities within Bayelsa and the Niger-Delta region.According to Moses Oruaze Dickson, one of the sons of the deceased, who is also the founder of the Goldcoast foundation and managing solicitor, TRIAX Solictors, the death of Mrs. Goldcoast is a huge loss to the family but also a reminder that life is too short to live without purpose and contribution to humanity. “My mother is an inspiration to me, as she proved that hard work, determination, a positive disposition to life and concern for people less privileged than one is, is all life is about”, he said.   In October 2018, the foundation was involved in providing over 10,000 relief materials to women and children affected by the flood in the Niger-Delta region and received a commendation from the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, during his routine visits to flood-affected states. This is a testament to the example laid by Mrs. Goldcoast, as she has been a lifelong contributor to the lives of women and children in Bayelsa state. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know Mrs. Goldcoast have lost a dear mother and a true lover of humanity”, said Mr. Authority Benson; the Coordinator of the Foundation. The burial schedule for Mrs. Goldcoast Dickson as announced by the family would begin with a service of songs on Thursday, 6th December 2018 at the Bayelsa state Ecumenical Center, Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. This would be followed on Friday, 7th December, 2018 by a wake-keeping and a commendation and thanksgiving service on 8th and 9th December, 2018.For more details on the burial programmes, visit her personal website to download The Goldcoast Dickson Burial Programme

Photo: Man raises alarm after spotting a civilian man roaming the streets of Abuja with an AK47

A Nigerian man, Olumide Olaniyan, has raised alarm after spotting another man believed to be a civilian, pictured above, roaming the streets in Nyanya, Abuja with an AK47 hung on his body. Read what Olumide wrote belowI was driving along Mararaba-Nyanya road this morning. I saw this man with a gun that looks like AK-47 or an automatic gun, I initially thought he is a security personnel, but, his dress, shoes and overall shabby look suggests otherwise.I was tempted to go ask him about his ID card and why he was such a psychological violence to onlookers. Then, I remembered Maama Sunde's counsel those days I used to do student activism at the University of Bariga, "ma se subolation si oro oloro, [don't interfere in other people's matter, face yours]". I felt that it is my business to ensure that there is safety and security in the land. I felt like questioning this dangerous looking man, on behalf of Nigeria. But, my sense talked to my brain, they both forced me to drive on. I will never know if the man is a vigilante, or a state security personnel. That certainly was not a Dane gun. That clothing was not a security personnel uniform. An undercover agent won't expose himself with an automatic gun in public. Our country is currently a fragile state, no onewho isn't a security personnel, should be allowed to move around with arms which may distress others.Could this man be one of those so called Malian herdsmen that have flooded Tangaza LGA and other areas in Sokoto state? Nigeria needs to protect its territories from (possible) internal and external aggression. When people just walk along, unbothered with this kind of an uninformed and ununiformed man in their midst, it means we are drifting towards Hobbesian Democracy...

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to begin nationwide strike on December 12

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics to begin nationwide strike on December 12The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has declared that it would begin an indefinite strike starting from December 12, 2018. The polytechnic lecturers will join their university colleagues who have been on strike since November 4th to press home their demands with the Federal Government. The National President of ASUP, Usman Dutse, in a chat with Premium Times said the federal government had failed to meet the demands of the polytechnic lecturers. Prior to this impending strike, the union had on October 2 issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government before it extended it to November. But even then, it did not commence the strike.    Mr Dutse said the proposed strike would be “total and indefinite. This further emphasises the resolution of the 93rd National Executive Council meeting reached at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos last week. Government has failed to implement and fulfil agreements it reached with the union as contained in the memorandum of understanding signed,” he said.   ASUP went on strike in November 2017; but when the federal government reached an agreement to implement the recommendations of the 2014 NEEDS assessment, the strike was suspended 15 days after.  The agreement particularly highlighted the need for increased funding of polytechnics.   Dutse also said the roles of state government and the National Assembly is not encouraging when it comes to funding the education sector.  “The issue of the funding of the institutions has always been a major concern. After the government conducted the NEEDS assessment in 2014, it promised to implement it. Years after, there is no designed roadmap to implement that”.
