The Apapa Government Reserved Area Residents Association has given the Federal Government a 21-day ultimatum to clear all bridges and roads in the area of trucks to ease movement. The residents on Friday told journalists that unless urgent steps were taken to resolve the traffic problems, they would mobilise and shut down the area completely. The President of the association, Brig. Gen. Sola Ayo-Vaughan (retd), said the traffic congestion which had turned Apapa and other parts of the Lagos metropolis into one huge parking lot was as a result of government’s lack of planning and will to enforce its laws and policies. He noted that the continuous queues of trucks and tankers blocking the entire network of intersecting roads, bringing traffic in all directions to a standstill were no longer acceptable. Ayo-Vaughan stated that the problem which was within Apapa had snowballed into a Lagos traffic, making movement in the area and its environs a nightmare. He said, “the bridges which were built to facilitate movement of vehicles have been converted into a permanent parking lot for trailers and tankers, restricting vehicular movement.Turning bridges into a parking lot is unacceptable anywhere in the world because of the inherent danger that may consequently cause calamity. The government has been warned of the looming danger which is inevitable if this practice continues.It is a matter of time. It is worthy to note that government officials and the Chief Executive Officers of the companies, government parastatals operating in Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports do not reside in Apapa.” According to Ayo-Vaughan, the government agencies and shipping companies operating in the area are aware of the situation but do not care because of the financial benefits they derive from it. He alleged that shipping companies were feeding fat on unearned container deposit and demurrage while terminal operators were having a field day collecting crazy storage charges from importers by restricting trucks in ports under the guise of no network. He added that truckers were also benefitting from the chaos by hiking their rates from N70, 000 within Lagos to N600, 000. “Residents and workers in Apapa are in this mess alone and if we don’t stand up for ourselves, nothing will happen. Anything short of physical mobilisation at this point will be meaningless. The Apapa gridlock is man-made and we are pressed beyond measures to do something about it. The victim told police that Petty approached her from behind in Queens, NY before he “placed a hard circular object” to her back and "made a clicking sound." The victim, convinced it was a handgun, and took his instructions when he told her to "keep walking."She claimed that he took her to a place down the street and forced her into an upstairs bedroom with the gun still pointed to her back. She alleges that he “laid his weight on top … pinched her sides and squeezed her neck causing her to sustain bruises and pain" before he “forced his penis” into her vagina.
The victim claimed that she made an attempt to leave the scene, but Petty pulled out a knife, put it against her stomach and told her that she "could not leave." She said that she eventually escaped after striking Petty with a plastic bottle.Police claimed that he questioned his arrest when they went to his home, asking "what am I being arrested for" and claiming that he didn't do anything." He later admitted that he slept with the girl before.Petty was convicted of attempted rape in the first degree after copping a plea deal. He served four years behind bars and is currently registered as a sex offender.In addition to the rape charges, Petty also served time for killing a man in 2002.He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of a man named Lamont Robinson.The complaint claims that on April 27, 2002 at 12:30 AM, Petty shot Robinson multiple times. Robinson was later pronounced dead at a hospital.Authorities originally charged Petty with 2nd-degree murder, but his lawyer got the charge reduced to manslaughter in a plea deal.In March 2006, Petty pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge in exchange for a 10 year prison sentence . He was released from prison in May 2013 after serving 7 years. On Friday night, the Vice Presidential debate put together by Nigeria Elections Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. An independently administered multi-stage process led to the selection of five political parties that partook in Friday’s Vice Presidential debate. Nigerian Army has buried 19 of its 23 troops killed in the Metele attack by Boko Haram, last month. Lt. Colonel Ibrahim Sakaba and 22 soldiers of 157 Task Force Battalion, Metele, Abadam Local Government Area, Borno State, who died in the gun-battle against Boko Haram on November 18 were buried on Friday in a solemn military ceremony at Army Cantonment Cemetery, Maiduguri. Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, said the troops paid the supreme price in the battle to keep the Northeast region safe. Buratai, who was represented by the army’s Chief of Training and Operations, Maj. Gen Lamidi Adeosun, said the names of the “fallen heroes will be written in gold” whenever the history of the counter-insurgency operation is documented. He appealed to the families and relations of the officer and soldiers to mourn the deceased personnel with the understanding of the huge role they have played in keeping the country at peace. He said the army would not leave them alone but ensure that the entitlements of the fallen personnel were given to their families. Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen Benson Akinroluyo said there have been an upsurge in Boko Haram attacks in recent times, the Metele incident being the most recent and painful attack. “The BH attack on troops’ location at Metele on 18 November 2018, is one of those events that will always be remembered in the history of Operation Lafiya Dole and the sacrifices that our gallant officers and soldiers have made in the fight against insurgency,” he said He said the Nigerian Army lost 23 of her best officers and soldiers while 31 were wounded in the attack. “The theatre has lost valuable equipment and more painfully, officers and soldiers who have had to lay down their lives in defence of our nation,” he disclosed. The trial of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia was stalled at the Lagos High Court Sitting in Ikeja on Friday as the judge slumped before proceedings could commence. According to reports, the incident caused the court to adjourn further proceedings till January 26, 2019 while lawyers and family members rushed to the aid of the judge and it was gathered that she was later rushed to a hospital after she was revived. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia and her co-defendant who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Godwin Obla, were dragged before the court by the economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). She is standing trial on 26 counts bordering on unlawful enrichment, taking property by a public officer, corruption, forgery and giving false information to an official of the EFCC. An unidentified white lady travelled all the way to Ghana to have an internet fraudster known locally as a ‘sakawa’ boy, arrested for defrauding her. According to Adomonline, the white lady had been defrauded some years back by the suspect identified as Solomon Attah, to the tune of 20,000 euros (GHC 113,000). After which, he cut ties with her.The lady then tracked Attah to Ghana and with the help of the local police, he was arrested.In the video, operatives of Ghana’s Criminal Investigations Department were seen trying to gain access into the house, where Attah and some other suspected internet fraudsters were living and carrying out their activities.Attah and his crew attempted to bolt but the police personnel were quick enough to capture them. They were arrested and taken to the police station.While the arrest was taking place, the white man that accompained the lady demanded that Attah paid part or the full amount of money he extorted.Attah said he’s ready to do that. Romance Scam: Banker arrested for defrauding a Chinese national to the tune of £79,000
A banker and Account Officer with Access Bank, Ojo Adefemi Adedoyin, who allegedly connived with one Favour Oriafoh, 30, to defraud a Hong Kong national, Xu Yue of £79,000 (Seventy Nine Thousand Pounds) has been arrested by EFCC. They were arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Commission, following investigation into a petition received from the Hong Kong Police Force, that the young lady was a victim of romance scam traced to Nigeria. Admitting to the crime, Oriafoh who goes by the con name, Terry Mac, confessed that he opened a FaceBook account in the name, just to defraud whoever falls prey to his baits. “She had fallen in love with me as Terry Mac, a football agent,” he said. He thereafter took advantage of her love and defrauded her of the said amount, using the domiciliary account of one Adeyemi Hassan Adedeji. During interrogation, he confessed that the Banker, Adedoyin, provided him with the domiciliary account information to which the money was transferred to. “The agreement was that whatever funds were received through the account, the account officer and the owner of the account will be entitled to 15 per cent of the funds,” he confessed. The Banker has made useful information to the Commission and they will soon be charged to court.Sowores supporters storm debate venue to protest his exclusion from the Presidential debate (Photos)
No fewer than 50 supporters of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore under the aegis of Take it Back Movement, on Friday evening stormed the Congress Hall of Trancorp Hilton in Abuja and staged a protest against his exclusion from the National Election Debate Group. The placard-carrying protesters came with different inscriptions, saying their struggle for fairness is a battle of no retreat, no surrender. According to them, they would sustain the protest because the reason for exclusion of the AAC candidate was not made public. The spokesperson of the protesters, Jude Eya told journalists that Sowore and AAC should be included in the debate.
