At
least 40 people have been killed after a tsunami caused by a volcanic
eruption hit beaches in Indonesia. The wave hit beaches around the Sunda
Strait late on Saturday night, destroying 430 houses, nine hotels and
10 ships. The country's Disaster Mitigation Agency confirmed around
600 people have been injured. A further two people are believed to be
missing. A tsunami alert was issued and people in low-lying areas fled
to higher ground. Indonesian officials believe the tsunami was caused
by an eruption on nearby Krakatoa, which has been spewing volcanic ash
into the air. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has been monitoring
the situation and has issued a red warning to airline pilots operating
in the region that an ash cloud is spreading south west from the volcano
to an altitude of 55,000 feet. It is believed the tsunami was caused by
an undersea landslide following the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano.
The wave hit beaches on the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and
Sumatra. Indonesian authorities said 430 houses have been badly
damaged as well as nine hotels. The wave also badly damaged ten ships
with dozens others needing repair. In September, at least 832 people
were killed by a quake and tsunami that hit the city of Palu on the
island of Sulawesi, which is just east of Borneo.

McGurk, the US special envoy to the anti-Islamic State group coalition,
has resigned. His resignation wraps up a chaotic week that saw the
departure of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Donald Trump’s stunning
decision to pull troops from Syria. McGurk’s resignation, effective
December 31, comes on the heels of Mattis’s decision to quit the Trump
administration over key disagreements with the US president, notably the
Syria withdrawal. Just last week McGurk, a Barack Obama appointee
whom Trump kept on, said “nobody is declaring a mission accomplished” in
the battle against IS just days before the president blindsided
politicians and allies with his announcement of victory against the
jihadist movement. Trump who had postponed his holiday vacation as
failed budget talks triggered a partial US government shutdown again on
Saturday said “ISIS is largely defeated.” “When I became President,
ISIS was going wild,” the president tweeted. “Now ISIS is largely
defeated and other local countries, including Turkey, should be able to
easily take care of whatever remains. We’re coming home!” McGurk, 45,
was set to leave his position in February, but reportedly felt he could
no longer continue in the job after Trump’s declaration and on Friday
evening informed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of his intention to wrap
up at year’s end. His conclusion mirrored that of Mattis, who was seen
as a voice of moderation in the mercurial Trump White House and quit
after telling the president he could not go along with the Syria
decision. McGurk has served as the US envoy to the Global Coalition to
Defeat ISIS, another acronym for the jihadist group, since 2015. He
also served as the deputy assistant secretary of state for Iraq and
Iran, and worked under Republican George W. Bush as a senior official on
Iraq and Afghanistan.
A
model plane enthusiast and his 54-year-old wife have been revealed as
the suspects arrested over the Gatwick Airport drone mayhem but his boss
claims he was working and could not have been the culprit. Forensic
squads had been searching a van outside window-fitter Paul Gait, 47, and
his wife Elaine Kirk's home but the probe was thrown into confusion as
Mr Gait's boss John Allard vouched for him and said he was at work.
Allard, who runs a double glazing firm in Crowborough, said he could
'account for Paul's movements between the hours of 7am and 5pm last
Monday to Friday'. The 47-year-old suspect had been 'part of a three-man
team fitting glass doors and windows in the Crowborough area', his
employer said. The couple were arrested in Crawley, the West Sussex
town where they live and which has previously been a battleground for
environmental groups opposing the expansion of the airport. The arrests
come as police look into theories as to whether eco-warriors or a group
of activists protesting deportations of migrants could be behind the
drone mayhem. Crawley, a town with a population of just over 100,000, is
just five miles away from Gatwick and under the airport's
flightpath. Activists in the town have previously declared a 'state of
emergency' in the countryside to counter a proposed second runway.
Around 1,000 aircraft have been cancelled or diverted amid this week's
mayhem, plunging 140,000 passengers into chaos since Wednesday
night. Flights have resumed by many are operating with delays after
three days of disruption, with some passengers having to abandon
holidays or struggling to get home for Christmas.

The
Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has designated January 8th 2019 for the
mother of all protest to demand a new minimum wage. The labour unions
reached this agreement after a national executive council meeting which
held in Abuja yesterday December 21st. Recall that the labour unions and
the government, both state and Federal, have been at loggerheads. The
union is demanding that the wage be increased to N30, 000 but the state
government insist they can afford N22,500. NLC says the January 8th
protest would be to express anger and dissatisfaction.“The protest is to
express anger and total dissatisfaction over the delay by the federal
government in transmitting, enacting and implementing the new national
minimum wage of N30,000. The NEC-in-Session approved that the protests
should hold in all state capitals and the Federal Capital Territory
Abuja on January 8, 2019. The NEC mandates all industrial unions and
state councils to fully mobilise workers and coordinate with other
labour unions for this mother-of-all protest.” he said

Mohammed, a Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security
personnel on Friday slumped and died while on duty at the General
Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
Olayinka Abioye, immediate past General Secretary, National Union of
Air Transport Employees (NUATE), confirmed the incident saying, 'the
deceased was a former executive member of NUATE, FAAN branch. We learnt
he was on duty yesterday when he suddenly collapsed and died before
receiving medical attention.” He said the deceased, who is survived by
a wife and five children, had been buried according to Islamic rites.
Abioye described Mohammed’s demise as unfortunate, stressing that the
FAAN management must give priority and urgent attention to the well
being of workers. According to him, some aviation security staff are
being made to work more than the required eight hours per day without
rest periods or compensation. “It is said that some of them work for 12
hours at a stretch without break simply because the Directorate of
Aviation Security is suffering from dearth of adequate manpower,” he

Four
stowaways from Nigeria have been arrested in the United Kingdom after
special forces stormed a cargo ship off the country’s coast. The
stowaways, who are suspected migrants had reportedly threatened staff
on-board. Special Boat Service (SBS) operatives from Sabre Squadron
fast-roped from helicopters on to the ship, which had been sailing in
the Thames Estuary, Sky News reported. The operation lasted around 25
minutes and no one on-board was injured. Essex Police said the vessel
was taken to the Port of Tilbury and four men have been arrested under
the Immigration Act. The ship arrived at the Port of Tilbury in the
early hours of Saturday at just after 4.20am. Officers boarded the
236-metre long cargo ship, called the Grande Tema, shortly after 11pm on
Friday. Its operator, Grimaldi Lines, had earlier reported that four
stowaways armed with iron tubes had called for the crew to navigate
closer to the coast. The company’s spokesman Paul Kyprianou told Sky
News:“The vessel was coming from Nigeria. They managed to escape from
the cabin and started threatening the crew, requesting to have the
vessel navigate very close to the coast. We understand they wanted to
jump and reach the British coast.” He added that the crew locked
themselves in the bridge of the vessel after the migrants had picked up
potentially harmful objects. “They managed to get whatever they could
find on the vessel pieces of iron, tubes and things like that and this
is what they used in order to threaten,” Kyprianou said. The vessel had
been travelling eastwards through the English Channel when the migrants
were discovered on Friday morning.
