Presidency plotting to arrest lawmakers that booed President Buhari during the budget presentation PDP alleges

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) has alleged that the presidency is plotting to arrest all its members who booed President Buhari during the presentation of the 2019 budget last week.  This allegation was made by the spokesperson of the party's Presidential Campaign Organization, Buba Galadima, when he spoke with newsmen in Abuja yesterday December 23rd. Galadima claims he has it on good authority that the presidency was taking the names of those who supposedly booed the president in order to send either the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the police after them.“We learnt under an impeccable authority that some of his close aides are meeting and taking names of those who supposedly booed the president. Whether to frame them, either with the EFCC or ask the police to invite them, I don’t know.   They can’t arrest any parliamentarian for booing the president on what he thinks is correct. That the president misrepresented what has happened in his or her constituency. They should be careful with what they are trying to do, because what they are planning to do, whether the president knows or he doesn’t know, will affect the 2019 general elections.“Therefore, it is not out of place for members of the National Assembly and for all of you to know that there is a parliamentary immunity. That if members are within that hallow chamber, they can say anything and it will not offend any law. In fact, they cannot even be tried in the court of law for what they say in the National Assembly chambers.  He has no authority whatsoever, or his agents – whether EFCC, ICPC, police, and DSS – to accost any parliamentarian for having booed the president for what he read out on the floor of the National Assembly.” he saidRecall that President Buhari was booed by some members of the opposition party at the National Assembly during the budget presentation. It got so bad President Buhari had to stop his presentation to remind the lawmakers that the world is watch as he does his presentation and that they all need to comport themselves

Update: Death toll from Indonesia tsunami rises to 280

Update: Death toll from Indonesia tsunami rises to 280Death toll from a tsunami that hit the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted, has risen to at least 280 officials said.   They added that rescuers  are using heavy machinery and their bare hands to search for more victims. Hundreds more were injured when the tsunami struck, almost without warning, along the rim of the Sunda Strait late on Saturday. Over 3,000 coastal residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground, with a high-tide warning in place until Tuesday. The vast archipelago, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, has suffered its worst annual death toll from disasters in more than a decade. Earthquakes flattened parts of the tourist island of Lombok in July and August, and a double quake-and-tsunami killed more than 2,000 people on Sulawesi island in September. Search and rescue officials used their bare hands and some heavy machinery to clear the remains of buildings on Monday. Indonesia’s disaster agency had put the death toll at 222 on Sunday, with about 850 injured and 28 people missing, but raised it to 280 early on Monday.  A disaster mitigation agency official in Banten province named Jhony told reporters most victims were Indonesian holidaymakers.   The timing of the tsunami over the Christmas holiday season evoked memories of the Indian Ocean tsunami triggered by an earthquake on Dec. 26, 2004, which killed 226,000 people in 14 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

ASUU Strike: Union threatens to boycott future meetings, accuse FG of deceiving Nigerians

ASUU Strike: Union threatens to boycott future meetings, accuse FG of deceiving NigeriansThe Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it may not honour further calls by the federal government for a meeting on the way forward over the current strike by its members.   The union’s National President, Biodun Ogunyemi, said this on the sideline of a news conference on the update of the union’s struggle to salvage the country’s public universities from deterioration on Sunday in Lagos.   According to Ogunyemi, to ensure that the agreements were implemented, the union had held a series of consultative meetings with the government and written series of letters with little or nothing to the effect.  He noted that it was against this backdrop that union resumed strike on November 4.“Since the commencement of this strike, we have had six meetings with agents of the federal government, with no clear commitment from government to resolving the issues we presented.  Government appears to have adopted ‘keep them talking’ strategy while deceiving the public that progress was being made and that partial agreements had been reached between union and government.  We want to say that government has continually and falsely raised the hopes of the Nigerian public on the state of duscussion with our union and we may not be interested in holding further dialogue with them until we see signs of commitment and sincerity in addressing the issues before them.  Our expectation from a very responsive and sincere position is that by now, all outstanding issues would have been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties.  Unfortunately, government is yet to show commitment and sincerity in addressing these problems,” he said. .According to the don, on the renegotiation of Federal Government/ASUU agreement, there are still unresolved issues about the leadership of the government team. . “We have strong reasons to believe that the continuation of Dr Wale Babalakin as the head of the renegotiation with ASUU will not yield good fruit,” he said.   Ogunyemi said his union had taken up its current project as a lifetime, adding that this was why dating back to the 1980s, the union had remained consistent on what was of concern to it.  “If we miss education, we miss development as we will end up being enslaved the second time. What is happening in this country now is that people are privatising everything, including education and before we know it, what happened to our primary and secondary education will happen.  And these are some of the things we are supposed to be tracking and engage in this society if we want to make the change that we need. Our conviction is the reason behind the prolonged strike and our members have the conviction that until we get education right, Nigeria will never get it right. Insurgency will increase, banditry, poverty, kidnapping, misery and other societal ills will continue.Let me also state clearly too that our strike has nothing to do with politics or election, as is being speculated in some sectors of the society. We have never thought of aborting any election. We do not want to create problem for this country but let the government do the right thing,” he said.

Nigerian detained in US, our findings - Abike Dabiri

The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora has given more insight into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a Nigerian, Mr Okufolajimi Abegunde in US since June 25, 2018 even though till date there was no official correspondence to the effect from the family.2. However, that notwithstanding, these are the facts of the matter :(a) A US  department of Justice has since June 2018 arrested and charged eight   people including Mr Abegunde for cybercrime and business email compromise conspiracy.(b) They were alleged to have defrauded some US Companies and individuals to the tune of $15 Million USD.(c) However,  Mr Abegunde claimed innocence, saying his address was used by a friend of his, Mr Ayodeji Ojo, who has apparently been previously charged with conspiracy to commit fraud and is currently at large.(d) Mr Abegunde along with the 7 others, currently have a criminal case against them in the US, . Mr Abegunde had his detention hearing on June 25th.(e) However, when the Nigerian consulate in Atlanta became aware of the detention of Mr Abegunde, who claimed innocence,a letter was written to the West Tennessee Detention Facility in Mason, Tennessee (where he is detained) requesting consular access.3. The consulate in Atlanta is awaiting response  for consular access to Mr Abegunde through the US Department of State in Washington. , without which the mission cannot visit him4. The case of Mr Abegunde underscores  the need for our citizens to be careful of how they deal with people, even acquaintances, especially when it comes to financial matters.5. Mr Abegunde ‘s pleas that his friend, Mr Ayodeji Olumide Ojo, usedhis address to open a bank account in a US bank, will hopefully be proven right in court6. Unfortunately, Mr  Ojo , his friend, who  has been  previously indicted by the US Department of Justice and charged with conspiracy to commit fraud is currently on the run7. The consulate will undertake a consular visit to Mr Abegunde as soon as consular access is granted by the US authorities.8. Please find attached a detailed report by the US Justice department on the matter:http://bit.ly/2AdO32J BalogunS.A.Media to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

We reject your plan to Impose new taxes on Nigerians' - PDP tells President Buhari

'We reject your plan to Impose new taxes on Nigerians' - PDP tells President BuhariThe PDP Presidential Campaign Organization has condemned plans by President Buhari to impose new taxes on Nigerians who they say are 'already overburdened, impoverished and pauperized by his incompetent, insensitive, uncaring, vindictive and corrupt administration'. The party in a statement said, 'It is disheartening that instead of President Buhari to seek ways to recover the over N14 trillion looted under his cover by APC leaders and the cabal in his Presidency, Mr. President is seeking to inflict more pain on distraught Nigerians, by imposing new taxes on them in the coming year'. The PPCO holds that Nigerians have suffered too much and have made immeasurable sacrifices under this overtly corrupt and oppressive administration, that is running archaic, harsh and anti-people economic policies. Why would President Buhari want to impose more taxes on Nigerians when he has refused to recover trillions of Naira in unremitted oil revenue held down by his cronies and APC leaders, under his watch, in the last three and half years? We hold that Nigerians are already overtaxed by the Buhari administration, which has foisted sundry hidden taxes on our day-by-day goods and services in the most critical sectors of our lives, resulting in high costs that have made life miserable for our citizens.By thinking of imposing new taxes, President Buhari has shown that he is less concerned about the plight of our citizens, who have suffered so much hardship under his insensitive regime that they now resort to suicide and slavery mission outside the shores of our country as options. Moreover, our nation abound with huge natural and human resources which President Buhari’s administration, in its incompetence, lacks the capacity to harness, leading to this resort to Further fleecing of Nigerians. The PPCO in rejecting the planned new taxes, charges President Buhari, who has confessed to his inability to run our economy, to get ready to quit the stage, as Nigerians are now rallying behind the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who understands the art of wealth creation and management of resources, that puts no undue burden on our hardworking compatriots.Enough is Enough!

Jazz musician continues to play guitar while surgeons operate on his brain to remove tumor (video)

Jazz musician continues to play guitar while surgeons operate on his brain to remove tumor (video)
A jazz musician with a brain tumour played a guitar during his brain surgery in South Africa.
Musa Manzini, from South Africa, played his guitar during the successful operation.
According to one of the neurosurgeons, Dr. Rohen Harrichandparsad, the playing of the guitar helped guide surgeons during the delicate surgery whilst "preserving natural pathways".
Mr Manzini was given local anaesthetic by doctors during the procedure, also known as an "awake craniotomy" at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban.

Dr Harrichandparsad said:
It increased the margin of safety for us, in that we could have real-time feedback on what we were doing intraoperatively.
Doctors said they gave Mr Manzini his instrument toward the end of the procedure so they could check that everything was in order.  The doctors wanted to test Mr Manzini’s "ability to produce music" during surgery, which requires the complex interaction of pathways in the brain.
A photo and video taken by the medical team shows the musician lying with his guitar in the operating room.
"There you are, do your thing," a team member says as he begins playing.
In an "awake craniotomy," some doctors choose to stimulate parts of the brain with a mild electrical current as a way of testing and mapping areas that control key functions of the brain such as movement and speech. If a patient is struggling to speak when the current is applied to a particular area, doctors know they must protect it during tumour removal.
