US government arrests two Nigerian pharmacists arrested over $9.6m illegal drugs distribution
An indictment was unsealed today charging three pharmacists, one doctor and two other individuals withconspiracy to illegally distribute prescription drugs, U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider announced today.Charged in the indictment are: Nigerian pharmacists Enitan Sodiya-Ogundipe, 42, and Abiodun Fabode, 56, Pharmacist Amir Rafi, 49, Dr. Vasan Deshikachar, 50, Niesheia Tibu, 44, and Andrei Tibu, 30.The indictment alleges that from January 2015 through March 2018, these pharmacists and doctor conspired with the other defendants to issue and dispense a large number of prescription opioids for supposed patients, who did not havea legitimate medical need for the drugs.Deshikachar primarily prescribed oxycodone and oxymorphone, two ofthe most addictive opioids that have high street value. The Tibus would take the supposed patients to Precare Pharmacy, Global Health Pharmacy and Friendz Pharmacy, where Sodiya-Ogundipe, Rafi and Fabode would dispense the drugs.The Tibus then obtained the drugs and sold them on the street. According to the indictment, the pharmacies dispensed more than 344,737 dosage units of Schedule II opioid prescriptions during the course of the conspiracy. These controlled substances had a conservative street value in excess of $9,600,000.“In this case, three pharmacists and one doctor allegedly conspired to distribute nearly $10 million worth ofopioids into the community, potentially spreading addiction and causing untold damage to Michigan families.Diversion of prescription pills to the street market is a direct cause of thecurrent opioid epidemic facing our country,” U.S. Attorney Schneider said.

A nursing mother and six others including the driver of a commercial bus heading to Owerri from Onitsha have been killed in an auto crash.The accident happened at Onitsha/Owerri road, precisely at Njaba hill, Imo State, according to Daily Sun.The newspaper reports that a Mercedes Benz lorry on high speed rammed into the bus conveying 16 passengers, causing the vehicle tosomersault several times, killing seven passengers and injuring 10 others.The newspaper further reported that the nursing mother was identified by a source who said she came from Umuogwuta, Ndegwu in Owerri west council area and was a petty trader who had gone to Onitsha market before she met her untimely death.The State Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, sector commander, Joseph Aremu confirmed the incident.He, however, added that while their preliminary investigation had indicted the lorry driver, furtherinvestigation was still ongoing to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.Aremu said the dead victims were immediately taken to the mortuary while the injured victims were conveyed to the hospital by his men from the Njaba unit.

The Appeal Court overruled the decision of Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court inLagos, who, on October 16, 2017, dismissedAkpobolokemi’s no-case submission.TheEconomic and Financial Crimes CommissionEFCChad on December4th 2015, arraigned Akpobolokemi alongside five others namely Ezekiel Agaba, Ekene Nwakuche, Governor Juan, Blockz and Stonz Limited and Al-Kenzo Logistics Limited, for allegedly diverting N2.6bn from the coffers of NIMASA between December 2013 and May 2015.The six defendants had all pleaded not guilty to the 22 charges pressed against them, following which the EFCC opened its case, calling 12 witnesses and tendering 77 exhibits in a bid to prove the allegation.Following an appeal by the defendants, the court of appeal discharged and acquitted Akpobolokemi of the entire 22-count charge The five other defendants were, however, not discharged by theappeal court which upheld the high court’s ruling that they had a case to answer.

Ex-Police Commissioner Onofiok arraigned on alleged N1.9bn fraud
Justice Chizoba Oji of FCT High Court, Apo, on Friday granted N50mbail to Victor Onofiok, ex-Commissioner of Police, who was arraigned on 21 counts bordering on fraud to the tune of N1.9bn.Oji also ordered the defendant to provide two sureties with landed property and resident in the FCT.She adjourned the case until October 4 and October 16 for definite hearing.The Economic and Financial CrimesCommission arraigned the former commissioner of Police for alleged money laundering and illegal diversion of Police funds, offences he denied committing.When the case came up on Wednesday, May 23, Oji adjourned the case until June 1, to rule on Onofiok’s bail application, as he denied committing the alleged offences.The prosecutor, Deborah Eteh, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences between 2008 and 2009; and 2011.She said that Onofiok, while servingas the CP in charge of Works, Logistics and Supply of the Nigeria Police Force, abused his office.She alleged that the defendant awarded contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of Police facilities across the country to his personal companies.Eteh said that the defendant, while serving as CP Force Headquarters, between 2008 and 2009 at Abuja, unlawfully used his office and position to corruptly confer undue advantage upon himself by using companies registered in his name.She listed them as: Faksene International, Dutse Allah Construction Ventures, Nne-Edak Technical Ventures, Puristic Adherent Company, and Quality Watch Construction Company.The prosecutor also said that in 2011, the defendant used his position to secure contract for the construction of Police quarters, at Victoria Island and Ikorodu, worth N95.67m.The offences contravened the provisions of Section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and other RelatedOffences Act 2000.
Armed police officer kills hotel customer in Lagos
A customer who came to have a drink at a Lagos hotel was shot and killed after hot exchange of words and attempt to disarm a mobile police officer attached to the hotel. According to reports the incident happened at the popular Ileviaoje Hotel and Suites located at Obalade Street, Ajagun Estate, Ijegun, Lagos. The victim identified as Jude a.k.a Cornell was said to have been hit by the bullet released by the unidentified officer, who is said to beon the run now. Following the incident, youths in the area mobilised, attacked the hotel, damaged about seven vehicles parked inside and almost razed the main hotel building. It took the intervention of the DPO Isheri Oshun Division and his team, who went there and prevented the irate youths from causing more damages in the hotel.The lifeless body of the deceased was retrieved by the police and deposited at the Yaba mortuary for autopsy report. It was learnt that the victim and his friends went to the hotel to drink and while they were inside there, they quarreled among themselves. The police officer who was with his AK47 rifle, went to them, confronted and asked the victim to leave the hotel premises if they wanted to fight. At that point, the victim and the police officer had an exchange of hot words, to the extent that the victim held his gun and attempted to disarmed him. It was during the scuffle that the police officer was said to have shot him, he fell down and died immediately. By the time hewas taken to a hospital, he was already dead and the doctors certified him dead.Meanwhile, the hotel has been temporary shut down for business and seven of the angry youths were said to have been arrested and detained at Area M Command, Idimu over the looting and destruction of properties at the hotel.

17m people left Africa in 2017 in search of greener pastures – UN report
A new report by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has said no fewer than 17million Africans left the continent in 2017 in search of greener pastures,The ‘Economic Development in Africa’ report also said 5.5 million people moved to Africa from other continents while some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa.“Overall, some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa, and 17 million Africans left the continent during last year. The continent was also the destination for about 5.5 million people from outside,”the report found.It said the large-scale migration of people within Africa tended to boost growth and lifted the continent’s whole economy, urging the world to dispel misconceptions and “harmful narratives” targeting migration. The report also said cross-border movement offered “a chance for a better life, with the social and economic benefits extending to bothsource and destination countries, as well as future generations”.Mukhisa Kituyi, the Secretary-General of (UNCTAD), said at the launching the report: “Our analysis shows this to be true for millions of African migrants and their families”. Kituyi added that public perception, “particularly as it relates to international African migration, is rifewith misconceptions that have become part of a divisive, misleading and harmful narrative.”The report said remittances travelling back home from migrant workers both outside and inside Africa rose on average from 38.4 billion dollars between 2005 to 2007,to 64.9 billion dollars, during the two-year period up to the end of 2016.According to the report, therefore, remittances accounted for over half of the capital flows within the continent. Likewise, migrants contributed nearly 20 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Côte d’Ivoire according to figures from 2008, and 13 per cent in Rwanda (2012 figures).Junior Davis, the lead author of the report, said it provided evidence of the “intimate correlation” between migration and trade two sides of the same coin.“Africa is on the cusp of tremendouschange,” he said, noting the recently agreed African Continental Free Trade Area and the Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons. In this context the report contributes to a better understanding of the implications of intra-African migration for the continent’s socio-economic transformation,” Davis added.However, alongside the numbers of migrants moving and working within Africa, the continent also has some of the highest number of people forced from their homes due to conflict or natural disasters.On top of the development gains lostat home, there is a significant economic and social burden faced by host countries, leaving many migrants dependent on international humanitarian aid, the report stated.

The Lagos State Government has released the sum of N859.059m for the payment of accrued pension rights to 158 Public Service retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme for May 2018.Addressing the retirees at the 51stRetirement Benefit Bond Certificate Presentation Ceremony today, the Commissioner, for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke Akintola said the State government has paid accrued pension rights in excess of N37.5billion into the Retirement Savings Accounts of 9,045 retirees since the inception of the present administration. He said, “Despite the fact that the funding obligations of the current pension scheme are high, Governor Ambode is committed to the wellbeing of the Pensioners and the active staff. PDP counters Buhari, says youth free to run for president in 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned and described as degrading and completely unacceptable, the declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari, that Nigerians youth should not contest the Presidency in the 2019 general elections.PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, insists the Nigerian youth have come of age and are free, under all circumstances, to contest forany position, including the office of President, even in the 2019 general election.The President who signed the “Not Too Young To Run” bill into law on Thursday at the Council Chamber of State House Presidential Villa, said the the youth can aspire for presidency but should postpone their campaign till after 2019 election as he is running for a second term.The PDP, who had attacked the president in a statement yesterday, saying the bill was their initiative, alleged that the President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been using all manner of machinations to frustrate front line participation of the youth and of course, thewomen in active politics and governance.“PDP describes such a declaration as totally unpresidential, unlawful, discriminatory and further showcases the disdain with which Mr. President holds the youths, who he had earlier described, without apologies, as lazy and lovers of freebies.“We want Nigerians, particularly, the youth, to note that President Buhari’s position reflects the policy of his dysfunctional All Progressives Congress (APC), not to allow our youth the opportunity to aspire at top levels.”The party said the president never supported the bill which is why his statement counters the purpose for signing the bill.“It is unimaginable that a President can signa law and immediately seek to suspend it. EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu tells banks to provide list of corrupt customers
Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of EFCC has asked banks to provide a list of corrupt customers ahead of the 2019 general elections. Magu urged compliance officers of banks in Nigeria to be more diligent in their responsibilities, as a way of tackling money laundering and other fraudulent practices in the sector. Hesaid compliance officers in various banks in Nigeria must also take ownership of the fight against corruption, which he described as one of the problems bedeviling the banking industry.Speaking during an interactive session with Association of Chief Compliance Officers of Banks in Nigeria, ACCOBIN, in Lagos on Thursday, May 31, 2018, Magu said: “We need to find a common ground to work together. You have a responsibility to fight corruption.“The Commission is ready to partner with you to ensure a healthy economy. We are ready to assist the banks in recovering their debts, but compliance officers must ensure due diligence, especially when giving out loans to customers. I know you sometimes need to protect some of your customers. But it is sometimes better that you do without some of these people;otherwise, you will be seen as conspiring with them to steal public funds.”He further charged banks’ compliance officers to always provide the Commission with necessary information to assist it in carrying out its responsibilities, adding that “We must work together to save this country. Most of the banks are sitting on water. In fact, some of these banks are almost collapsing.“I know there are questions you can’task, particularly it involves some individuals, but if you give us information on such people, we will move in. If there are fundamental issues that can affect your banks, you can give us the information, especially as another general election approaches. I don’t want to be charging banks alongside suspected criminals because doing so can wreak havoc on the economy.It will even discourage investors from coming to the country.”
Police IG, Ibrahim Idris tells Federal High court to declare the Senate's insistence his appearance as 'illegal'
The Inspector of General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to declare as unconstitutional, the Senate’s insistence that he must appear for a legislative hearing in person. He insisted in his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/457/2018 and filed on April 30, 2018, that his personal appearance before the Senate was unnecessary because the issues for which he was invited were not personal.The IGP, through his lawyer, Alex Izinyon (SAN), who filed the suit on his behalf, joined the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as defendants in his suit. He noted that if he was to personally honour every invitation sent to the office of the IGP, there would be no time to attend to his main responsibilities. The Senate had in a letter dated April 25, 2018, invited theIGP to appear before it in relation to the purported inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye and the killings in many parts of the country. The IGP, on April 26, refused to appear before the Senate but delegated the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) and Commissioner of Police, Kogi State to represent him at the Senate. But the Senate refused to grant an audience to the two representatives, insisting that the IGP must personally appear for the legislative hearing. The upper legislative chamber then rescheduled the meeting for May 2 and again directed that the IGP must honour its invitation in person. The IGP, in a supporting affidavit accompanying his suit, said his action of delegating his subordinates to appear before the Senate was backed by law.He said under the Constitution and Police Act, he had the power to delegate responsibilities, including directing some of his subordinates to represent him wherever he was invited, more so that his choice of the DIG (Operations) and CP, Kogi State was on the basis that they were conversant with the issues for which he was invited.Both Saraki and the Senate, in a counter-affidavit, accused the IGP of using the court to shield himself from being scrutinised by the legislature. They stated that the IGP’s representatives were denied audience because of “the weighty issues which require clarification as they touched on the very soul of our national existence and in order to ensure fruitful and meaningful deliberations.” They prayed the court to reject the plaintiff’s prayers and dismiss the suit. Justice John Tsoho on Thursday adjourned till June 29 for the hearing of the suit.
