I won 2015 election – Ohakim tells Okorocha

The former governor of Imo state, Ikedi Ohakim has described Governor Rochas Okorocha as a ‘liar’, while revealing why he lost the 2015 governorship election in the state.
The former governor, who was reacting to Okorocha’s claim that Imo people hated him and kicked him (Ohakim) out of office, said the governor had lost credibility.
Okorocha had also claimed yesterday that Ohakim ran the worst government in the state right from the military regime.
But Ohakim, reacting through his Chief Press Secretary, Collins Ughalla, said Okorocha does not like the truth, adding that Imo people like him so much.
According to him, “Okorocha does not like the truth. Going by the 2011 governorship election, Imo people loved Ohakim, so much. They voted for him [Ohakim] and he won that election.
“Don’t forget that the election was militarized. It also witnessed the kidnapping of the returning officer from Ohaji/Egbema local government, which had 34,000 votes.
“Don’t forget Ohaji/Egbema, remains a PDP stronghold and the votes were Ohakim’s votes. The votes from Oguta LGA, remains inconclusive.
“They did not allow it to be counted. If you put all these together, you will find out that Imo people did not reject Ohakim. Today, Imo people now know that Ohakim is a saint compared to Okorocha.”

Buhari is laying foundation now, will complete building Nigeria from 2019 - Tony Momoh

Tony Momoh says President Buhari will complete the foundation he has started in the last three years

Momoh says impatience is making some Nigerians criticise the government of Buhari

The former information minister adds that Buhari's background speaks volume about his love for Nigeria

A former information minister and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Tony Momoh has insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari is laying the foundation for a prosperous Nigeria and will complete it during his second term in office.

Momoh as appealing to Nigerians to ensure Buhari is re-elected in 2019 said he is sure the president will win the election with more massive votes than many people can think of.

The report said Momoh said only impatient Nigerians have continued to criticise the president, adding that Buhari was well prepared for the presidency owing to the experienced he has garnered over the years.

“Buhari is laying a foundation and I plead with Nigerians to ensure that he returns and I believe he will return with more massive votes than anyone can think of now. If he returns, he is going to finish the foundation he is laying now.

“Nigeria has a future and a mission and the foundation is being laid now and Buhari is prepared for it. Look at his background.

"He is the only person who in Nigeria said he wants to be president and he didn’t ask for any other job and he became president.

“Do you think all these preparations in 2003, 2007, 2011 and now is nothing? Even before the Civil War, in 1966 he has been in public life, lived everywhere and train everywhere in Nigeria. Do you think he will go to that office with empty head?

“It is people who are impatient that are criticising him. Everything is structured. Of course, there are lots of people around him who will normally try to mislead him but he doesn’t take action on anything until he is convinced about it,” he said.

INEC suspends CVR in 2 LGA’s in Kogi, following outbreak of violence

INEC has suspend ongoing Continuous Voter Registration in some communities in two LGA’s in Kogi state after violence broke out in the areas

Officials will go back and capture the particulars of eligible voters and replace lost voter cards when normalcy is restored to the areas

AS 2019 approaches, the Commission has also disclosed that it is making arrangements to take issuance of PVC’s closer to the people

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has suspended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) in some communities in Bassa and Dekina local government areas of Kogi.

The state’s resident electoral commissioner, Prof James Apam, who announced this during a press conference in Lokoja on Wednesday, June 13, blamed the development on persistent violent clashes within the affected communities.

Apam also disclosed that the Commission has had cause to suspend the exercise in Omala local government sometime this year, for similar reason

He said that the communities where the exercise was being put on hold were unsafe for INEC staff to work there.

“We believe that the security agencies and traditional rulers are aware of these security breaches and are taking steps to bring them to an end,” Apam said.

According to him, a quick return of normalcy to the communities will enable INEC officials to go and capture the particulars of eligible voters and replace lost voter cards.

The commissioner, however, said that 245,195 new voters have been registered in the state since the commencement of CVR in April last year.

Apam said that the new registrants were made up of 123,877 males and 121,318 females; while the commission had also treated 9,774 applications for transfer and 12,123 cases of damaged or defaced Permanent Voter cards.

The REC further explained that 59,078 voter cards had been issued to those who registered before the 2015 general elections, adding that 200,429 cards were still lying uncollected.

He said that the office had also taken delivery of newly printed 112 ,333 Permanent Voter Cards as well as cards for those who had newly registered and those who applied for inter-state transfer of their cards from April to December 2017.

Apam regretted that only 7,943 of the newly printed 112,333 voter cards had been collected as at Tuesday, June 12, appealing to traditional rulers, press and registered political parties to assist in mobilising Nigerians to collect their cards.

He also said that the INEC was making arrangements to take issuance of PVCs closer to the people.

Independent National Electoral Commission said that it was still in possession of 7,920,129 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) yet to be collected from its offices across the nation.

The Commission disclosed this in a tabular data on consolidated PVCs released in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Former APC chieftain advises Ortom to re-contest under another party to win re-election

A house of representatives aspirant, John Akperashi, has advised the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, to leave the All Progressives Congress

He said that the governor should defect from the party if he wants to win re-election

Akperashi claims that Ortom is no longer comfortable in the ruling party

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has been advised by a former chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, John Akperashi to defect to another party to actualise his second term aspiration.

Akperashi, the house of representative aspirant, made the advise on Wednesday, June 13 when he spoke with journalists in Makurdi, saying that the governor would lose woefully if he contests under the umbrella of APC.

Akperashi said: “To an average Benue person, the APC is seen as Miyetti Allah party that has preference for cows over human beings.

“I know very well that Gov Ortom is not comfortable in the APC. If he is pretending then that is his own problem. It is either he is just playing along or playing to the gallery. He is just buying time to take his decision and at the appropriate time, he will just leave.

”But he has the resources so he can do whatever he likes at any time but some of us are still growing. If what is obtainable in the APC I do not see him winning elections.

“Yes, he has done his best and I give him kudos for that. I have said it often that put Suswam and Ortom, he has done well more than the former in terms of protecting the lives of his people and fighting herdsmen because of the law he collaborated with Benue people to sign.”

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state had been endorsed by the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the sole candidate of the party in the coming 2019 general elections.

Ortom’s endorsement was made on Saturday, May 19, by delegates of the APC at the Benue state congress.

Choose between MKO Abiola , Abacha, stop confusing us – Soyinka confronts Buha

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka has called on president Muhammadu Buhari to take a stand between late MKO Abiola and former military president, Sani Abacha.

Soyinka, speaking on Tuesday during the Special National Honours Investiture at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, urged Buhari to stop confusing Nigerians and take a stand.

He was one of the speakers at the occasion where MKO Abiola, the adjudged winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and others were honoured.

Soyinka said, “As we inaugurate hall of fame, we should inaugurate hall of shame on another hand.

”Hall of Shame should be in line with Hall of Honours. Many unsung heroes and heroines. The torture, dehumanizing of Nigerians were horrendous.

“I will like to appeal to you to stop confusing Nigerians. It is not possible to honor MKO Abiola in one breadth and praise his tormentor in another breadth.”

MKO Abiola: Shehu Sani lists other names Buhari should apologize to

Shehu Sani, Senator representing Kaduna Central, on Thursday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to apologize to the family of late President, Musa Yar’Adua.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain also urged Buhari to also apologize to the families of late activists, Ken Saro Wiwa, Beko Kuti and Chima Ubani.

In a tweet, the lawmaker further admonished the President to equally honour other activists.

According to Sani, “There’s need for the FG to tender an unreserved apology to the families of Ken Saror Wiwa and his Ogoni Kinsmen and honour the 9 and the 4 Ogonis with national honours. Same should be done to late Shehu Musa Yar’adua. Dr Beko Kuti and Chima Ubani must also not be forgotten.”

Recall that Buhari had on Tuesday apologized to the family of the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

Buhari tendered the apology on behalf of the federal government after conferring the title, Grand Commander Of the Federal Republic, GCFR, on Abiola

Kaduna Polls: PDP speaks on KADSIECOM’s ‘double standard’

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kaduna State chapter, has condemned in strong terms what it called the double standard being demonstrated by the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, KADSIECOM, in the conduct of the local government election in the state.

“In the whole, we condemned in strong terms, the double standard being demonstrated by the SIECOM, that is supposed to be an unbiased umpire,” Abraham Alberah Catoh, PDP state publicity secretary said in a statement.

The party said, “We expect that by now the culprits that were involved in the elections aberration that took place in Chikun local government would have been arrested by security agents at the instance of the SIECOM.

“The position of SIECOM that it did not disclose the identities of Returning Officers in order to forestall what happened in the past untenable. This is because SIECOM did not disclose the identities of such ROs even in the 12th May, 2018 elections to the public but only to APC/ Government officials.

“Therefore, it was SIECOM’s refusal ,even on our request to reveal the identities of the ROs that created mistrust in the electorates in both Kaura Local Government and other places.

“In Jaba local government, results were duly announced and declared by the SIECOM staff sent by the Commission, but for SIECOM to say they have two(2) results at hand means that they have sent two Returning Officers as against the provision Section 23 of the law governing the elections. SIECOM should come out and explain the sources of the second results and the authority behind such results.

“In the re-run in Kaduna South local government, it is laughable to announce that in the two(2) remaining wards of Sabon Gari North, APC scored 16,579 votes, PDP scored 1,985 votes and Sabon Gari South, APC scored 17,409 votes while PDP scored 1,731 votes, in total, APC polled 37,968 votes as against PDP’s 3,677 votes in the two Wards.

“The public is hereby to take note that in the 11 Wards declared by SIECOM in the 12th May elections APC got a total of 12,434 votes as against PDP’s 19,748 votes; for the results of 1 Ward now to be more than the results of 11 Wards garnered in the first round of elections, calls for questioning.

“As a party that believes in the rule of law, PDP would challenge all acts not in line with the electoral laws at the Tribunal.”

The party explained that it thought that SIECOM have learned a lesson in the 12th May, 2018 elections before embarking on the 6th June elections.

“The conduct of the 6th June election shows that no lesson was learned,” the party lamented.

The party expressed delight with the support and peaceful conduct of her members in particular, and the people of Kaduna State in the last two elections.

“We call on them to continue to maintain such noble posture as the party is doing everything legally possible to retrieve and defend the mandate given to the party by the good people of Kaduna State, it noted.

Why Buhari should sack Service Chiefs, INEC boss – Southern, Middle Belt leaders

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum, SMBLF, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu and the Service Chiefs.

The Joint Secretary of the forum, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, spoke in a chat with Punch.

The forum said there were indications that Yakubu might rig the 2019 presidential election in favour of Buhari, insisting that the four geopolitical zones that constituted SMBLF had no confidence in Yakubu.

Speaking ahead of the group’s next gathering, Odumakin said, “The meeting is a continuation of our normal consultations on the issue of restructuring to have a just and fair Nigeria. Those issues continue to dominate our agenda.

“We have put our demand for removal of the INEC Chairman and the service chiefs as a cardinal issue. We are not going to back down on them. We would continue to press on them. They would form part of the issues for discussion on Friday.”

Odumakin insisted that the next general polls may not be free and fair, pointing out that 15 out of the 17 security chiefs were from the northern region.

He said, “The impediments (to the 2019 elections) are so many. The major impediment is the security architecture in the country, the way the President has organised the security architecture, having 15 out of 17 service chiefs from his region.

“The tenure of the service chiefs has expired, but he kept them. This is geared towards the 2019 elections. Again, the composition of INEC does not give us confidence about the elections.

“The former acting Chairman of INEC, Amina Zakari, appointed by President Buhari happened to be his relation. Our information indicated that Zakari is more powerful than the INEC chairman. The nepotism that had crept into INEC does not give us confidence that there would be free and fair elections.

“We also learnt a lot of foreigners had been brought in from Niger Republic to register so that they can vote in 2019 and INEC has not responded to this.

“Underage voters were registered in Kano and they voted and INEC set up a committee to look into it, but up till now, it has refused to release the report, why? These are some of our fears for the election in 2019 and if they are not addressed, it is going be so turbulent”.

SEE HOW A PASTOR MAKES HIS CHURCH MEMBERS S UCK HIS P.ENIS IN CHURCH, SAYS HIS S.PERM IS HOLY MILK

An evangelical pastor arrested for raping his faithful, after convincing them that his penis contained “sacred milk”
Sobrino Valdeci Picanto, an evangelical pastor from Brazil, persuaded his followers that he practiced oral sex because it was the way he preached the word, saying that his ‘milk’ was sacred.
And this pastor said his penis was blessed and that “the Lord had consecrated with divine milk of the Holy Spirit” and of course, had to go around evangelizing.

“He convinced us that only God could come into our lives through the mouth”, a follower said, “Often, after worship, Pastor Valdeci asked us to do or.al se.x on him until the Holy Spirit came through ejaculation and delivered funds to the church.”

Sobrino Valdeci Picanto, 59, was arrested in Apore, Goiás, Brazil, for ra.ping several women attending his church. He gave as an excuse that his pen’is had been consecrated with “divine semen of the Holy Spirit.”

Valdecir came to abuse some elderly, and defends himself by saying that ‘he had an encounter with Jesus in a brothel and gave him the mission of spreading the sacred semen throughout the state, beginning with the faithful Apore Assembly, of which he is responsible’.

Denise Pinheiro, delegate of the region, said, “Valdecir was caught red-handed while rubbing his pen’is in the face of a local merchant, which promised to make more sales in her business due to the divine liquid.
When we acted Valdecir offered no resistance and even asked if I wanted to be part of the kingdom of heaven on the way to the police station.

Burning Of US And Israel Flags By Nigeria Entity Is A Clampdown To International Peace - Activist Writes

PERSISTENT BURNING OF US AND ISRAELITES  FLAGS  IN NIGERIA, DISRESPECT FOR SOVEREIGNTY OF NATIONS

The persistent defiance of the Nigerian government to accord respect to the sovereignty of the United States of America and Israel, calls for concern. State-sponsored instigations for the burning of the flags of these two nations call for stern and commensurate American government's foreign policy response to the rascality of Nigeria. The overt and covert actions of supervision of brazenly setting ablaze the national flags of these nations by the Islamic government of Nigeria, tantamount to mockery and arrant disdain against International laws protecting the sovereignty of nations. Nigeria as a country, enjoys diplomatic relations with these affected nations but it is disheartening to state here that the United States of America as a country and her government have consistently come under vicious attacks since President Donald Trump assumed leadership against the wish for Hillary Clinton with whom the Nigerian government had enjoyed some measures of Islamic goodwill for the American nation.

On the 20th of January 2017, that very eventful day that ushered in the inauguration of Mr. Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States of America, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from within Biafraland, massively converged in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to show solidarity. This is in line in keeping with the identification of the civilised democracies anywhere in the world. The solidarity rally was to drum up support for the incoming administration of President Trump particularly and to also celebrate a successful transition of governments between the two personalities. Prior to the scheduled date of the peaceful rally, the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide, duly notified the occupational government of Nigeria through a written document dated 18th January 2017. But with his disdain for President Donald Trump and all that he stands for, President Muhammadu Buhari  ordered the Nigerian armed forces to repressively  clampdown on the Biafran people even as the rally peacefully progressed with massive turn out of participants. A detachment of battle-ready army and police officers invaded the arena with lethal weapons beating, arresting, maiming, injuring and killing hundreds of people including men, women and youths, out of whom many are still being held extra-judicially in prison custody at Elele Prisons, Rivers State, till date. These same security operatives were on Friday 8th of June 2018, spotted shamelessly providing maximum protection to the violent Islamic protesters in Abuja. They were there supervising the bizarre burning of the US and Israeli flags that were hoisted in salient locations in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city.

Prudent assessment of this constant instigation of the armed forces or criminals sponsored by the Nigerian government through the protesters to set ablaze, US, Israeli and Russian flags, it therefore simply means that Nigeria should be stripped of whatever beneficial covering derivable from International laws as a country. If the Nigerian government blatantly fails to respect the National Symbol of the United States of America, Russia and Israel, to the extent of constantly supervising the destruction of these  diplomatic symbols, then it becomes necessary that the governments of these nations terminate forthwith whatsoever business relationship they have with Nigeria. This action they have to take by recognizing the sovereignty of Biafra as a nation to justifiably retaliate the excesses of Islamic Nigeria.

35 containers of restricted tramadol seized across ports – NAFDAC

Efforts by the Federal Government to end drug abuse by youths has yielded fruit as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has seized 35 containers of restricted tramadolat various ports in the country. The Director General of the agency, Moji Adeyeye disclosed this while speaking withthe News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday. She said nine out of the seized containers of tramadol were released to NAFDAC by the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS), and hadbeen destroyed by the agency.“We are seriously working with the custom on this; and each time they seize any container, they usually invite us to come and see the containers with tramadol.“So far, 35 containers were seized and onlynine of them have been handed over to NAFDAC which we have destroyed,” she said. She, however, decried the delay by the custom in handing over the rest of the containers to her agency. The NAFDAC boss stated that tramadol was a restricted drug but had been abused by Nigerian youths who use it without prescription.According to Ms Adeyeye, who is also a professor of pharmacology, the drug destroys children’s brain; thereby threatening the future generation of the nation. She lauded the present administration for placing an embargo on codeine, which she said, like tramadol, should only be given only by prescription as done in advanced country.NAN reports that the director general said the agency was more determined and committed than ever to stem the menace of illicit and fake drugs in the country.Recall that the Federal Government recently banned the local production and importation of codeine as addictive cough syrup, which is consistently abused.Stakeholders in the health sector have strongly condemned the activities of drug traffickers in view of their negative consequences of destroying the future of Nigerian youths, who are the leaders of tomorrow.

NAFDAC demands relief for local pharmaceutical coys

National Agency for Foods, Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, is currently working with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment on the issueof tax relief for local pharmaceutical companies, and they are optimistic that a smooth deal would emerge.Speaking yesterday in Abuja, Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Moji Adeyeye, elucidated that such relief would attract more investors into the pharmaceutical companies in the country.“About 80 per cent of materials currently use in the production of drugs are imported while only 20 per cent is sourced locally,” she said. The director-general said that the development was unacceptable and her agency would do everything possible to change the trend. She pledged to reverse the situation whereby 80 per cent of what is needed for production of drugs is sourced within the country and only 20 per cent will be imported.“In doing this, it will also help us in achieving ease of doing business, one of the policies of the present administration toboost investment,’’ she said. Meanwhile, Adeyeye has also announced plans to get enhanced salary structure for the staff of the agency to motivate them and boost the fight against illicit drugs. She noted that NAFDAC staffs are working hard to save the lives of Nigerians, though they are not well paid.Adeyeye however disparaged the situation where staff of the agency could not afford house rent in Abuja and Lagos, describing such as unacceptable to her and the agency.“Though, the last strike by members of the agency was in solidarity with JOHESU and we use the opportunity to meet with the union to address the issues on welfare.“Anda lot has been achieved with the union, we have our plans, very soon we will get a new staff good salary structure,’’ she said.

Atiku Abubakar's former aide threatens to sue President Buhari if GCFR title is conferred on MKO

Former adviser to former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Umar Ardo, has threatened to sue President Buhari if he confers the titleof GCFR on late MKO Abiola. Ardo in a statement released today, said president Buhari has no power to confer national honours on anyone without first seeking for and obtaining the approval of the National Council of State.

The statement reads:
“Pursuant to the powers of the Council of State in section 6(a)(iii) of Part 1 to the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) to advise the president on the matter of awarding National Honours, I call on President Mohammadu Buhari to immediately convene a meeting of the National Council of State to deliberate and advise him on his decision to award National Honours to the Late Chief MKO Abiola, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi before performing the planned investiture ceremony on Tuesday, this is simply to comply with due process of law.
“Driven by the need to determine whether in the president’s decision to confer the said national awards constitutional due process of law had been followed, I telephoned and asked a former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a serving Member of the Council whether to the best of his knowledge the issue had at any time been raised in any of the meetings of the Council of State and the advice of the said Council sought and obtained, he informed me and I verily believe him that it was never ever raised nor the advice of the Council ever sought or obtained.
“Therefore to go ahead and perform the investiture ceremony as planned is to indulge in flagrant illegality.”
He former adviser argued that: “Having campaigned on, sworn-in and is on oath to govern this country in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and due process of law and to defend and protect the said constitution, the president cannot confer national awards on the Late Chief MKO Abiola, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and Chief Gani Fawehinmi or anyone else without subjecting his decision to the advice of the Council of State as stipulated in the constitution.
“To do so is a breach not only of the constitution but also of the oath sworn to by the president and that is unacceptable.”
“Consequently, in pursuit of my civil right and obligation as a citizen that I am governed by the provisions of the Constitution, I will institute a court action demanding compliance with the provisions of the constitution in the award of the said National Honours if the government goes ahead with the investiture ceremony without abiding by the due process of law.”
Umar Ardo explained that: “It is important, however, to state here that I have absolutely no objection to the president conferring such national honours to Late Chief MKO Abiola and Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and, indeed, that they richly deserve such awards and much more, but it is only right to do the right thing rightly.
“My current call and possible court action is solely motivated by the obligation to enforce the rule of law and constitutionalism in the process of governing this country.”

May 29 Remains Inauguration Day For Presidents” – Senate

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday resolved to take President Muhammadu Buhari’s declarationa step further by asking that the official result of the June 12,1993 presidential election be announced. On Thursday, the Senate while largely supportingthe president’s announcement, however, insistedMay 29 will continue to be the hand-over date forpresidents of Nigeria. The lawmakers after a lengthy deliberation on the president’s announcement agreed that an alteration of the handover date will require a constitutional amendment.Since 1999 when the country returned to civil rule, Nigeria has celebrated May 29 as Democracy Day. The date, after every four years, also doubles as the day for the inauguration of newly elected presidents and many state governors.First to raise the issue on Thursday was Lanre Tejuosho (Ogun-APC) who commended Mr Buhari for the announcements while urging him to also reconcile with the Legislature.Having come under order 43 of the Senate standing order, the matter was not open for discussion.“For once, I want to thank the President of Nigeria. I want to say he has done well. This is one time that the President has given a thought to what (Moshood) Abiola and his family went through to fight for this democracy that we enjoytoday.“Going further, there are issues to be addressed so that we can be confident that this is not a Greek gift.”Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, said the gesture comes with legal issues which the president must address.“They are now saying June 12 is now DemocracyDay, proposing that in 2019, the president will now be sworn in on the 12th of June. This is illegally impossible.“A president shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of four years he took the oath of office.“The implication is that 29th of May remains the date the president will be inaugurated and take oath of office. If they are moving from May 29 to June 12, it means we have to amend this constitution.“Otherwise, we will be extending tenure of a president beyond what the constitution contemplates. We have to advise the president properly so that we won’t enter a jam next year. We cannot extend it to June 12 without extending the Constitution.”

17m people left Africa in 2017 in search of greener pastures – UN report

A new report by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has said no fewer than 17million Africans left the continent in 2017 in search of greener pastures,The ‘Economic Development in Africa’ report also said 5.5 million people moved to Africa from other continents while some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa.“Overall, some 19 million international migrants moved within Africa, and 17 million Africans left the continent during last year. The continent was also the destination for about 5.5 million people from outside,”the report found. It said the large-scale migration of people within Africa tended to boost growth and lifted the continent’s whole economy, urging the world to dispel misconceptions and “harmful narratives” targeting migration. The report also said cross-border movement offered “a chance for a better life, with the social and economic benefits extending to bothsource and destination countries, as well as future generations”.Mukhisa Kituyi, the Secretary-General of (UNCTAD), said at the launching the report: “Our analysis shows this to be true for millions of African migrants and their families”. Kituyi added that public perception, “particularly as it relates to international African migration, is rifewith misconceptions that have become part of a divisive, misleading and harmful narrative.”The report said remittances travelling back home from migrant workers both outside and inside Africa rose on average from 38.4 billion dollars between 2005 to 2007,to 64.9 billion dollars, during the two-year period up to the end of 2016.According to the report, therefore, remittances accounted for over half of the capital flows within the continent. Likewise, migrants contributed nearly 20 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Côte d’Ivoire according to figures from 2008, and 13 per cent in Rwanda (2012 figures).Junior Davis, the lead author of the report, said it provided evidence of the “intimate correlation” between migration and trade two sides of the same coin.“Africa is on the cusp of tremendouschange,” he said, noting the recently agreed African Continental Free Trade Area and the Protocol on the Free Movement of Persons. In this context the report contributes to a better understanding of the implications of intra-African migration for the continent’s socio-economic transformation,” Davis added. However, alongside the numbers of migrants moving and working within Africa, the continent also has some of the highest number of people forced from their homes due to conflict or natural disasters. On top of the development gains lostat home, there is a significant economic and social burden faced by host countries, leaving many migrants dependent on international humanitarian aid, the report stated.

PDP counters Buhari, says youth free to run for president in 2019

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned and described as degrading and completely unacceptable, the declaration made by President Muhammadu Buhari, that Nigerians youth should not contest the Presidency in the 2019 general elections.PDP, in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, insists the Nigerian youth have come of age and are free, under all circumstances, to contest forany position, including the office of President, even in the 2019 general election. The President who signed the “Not Too Young To Run” bill into law on Thursday at the Council Chamber of State House Presidential Villa, said the the youth can aspire for presidency but should postpone their campaign till after 2019 election as he is running for a second term. The PDP, who had attacked the president in a statement yesterday, saying the bill was their initiative, alleged that the President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been using all manner of machinations to frustrate front line participation of the youth and of course, thewomen in active politics and governance.“PDP describes such a declaration as totally unpresidential, unlawful, discriminatory and further showcases the disdain with which Mr. President holds the youths, who he had earlier described, without apologies, as lazy and lovers of freebies.“We want Nigerians, particularly, the youth, to note that President Buhari’s position reflects the policy of his dysfunctional All Progressives Congress (APC), not to allow our youth the opportunity to aspire at top levels.”The party said the president never supported the bill which is why his statement counters the purpose for signing the bill.“It is unimaginable that a President can signa law and immediately seek to suspend it. President Buhari’s attempt to talk down on and intimidate the youths from contesting against him in 2019 shows that he is not in support of the Not Too Young To Run law and only assented to it because he had no other option under the 1999 Constitution (as Amended).”Alerting the Nigerian youth, the PDP said this statement shows the policy of the president and its party as it has nothing to offer them.“The PDP therefore calls on all Nigerian youth to note that President Buhari and the APC have nothing to offer them and the nation at large. They should therefore spareno thoughts in jettisoning all support for President Buhari and the APC in their 2019 re-election bid.”The party therefore called on all Nigerian youth to come together and rally on its repositioned platform and give vent to their wishes and aspirations, within the circle of their collective task, to rescue the nation.

Aiteo, CoCa Cola, Nigerian Breweries, others top Super Eagles sponsors

Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eaglesis gradually becoming a commercial hot cake for big brands and has attracted over N6 billion in sponsorships. As Russia 2018 approaches, corporate organisations scramble to court the attention of the now celebrated team.No doubt, the Super Eagles have improved tremendously in their performance and have restored the confidence of teeming Nigerian fans andattracted corporate attention.A few years back, this was not so. The team grappled with lots of technical and financial problems. Coaches were owed salaries and players played under very demoralising conditions. However, things began to change around April 2017, when an indigenous oil company, Aiteo Group, decided to take a chance and inject a whopping sum of N2.5 billion into Nigerian football in partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).This fund was instrumental to the Super Eagles sudden turnaround and clinching the World Cup ticket. Since their qualification, The Super Eagles brand has become more attractive to large corporate bodies seeking brand exposure and hoping to reach Nigeria’s football loving audience. NFF president, Amaju Pinnick stated in March 2018, thatNFF has “entered into various partnership deals worth over $50 million in the past one year.” Below is a list of their top sponsors as they make their way to Russia for the most watched football tourney in the world:Top energy conglomerate, Aiteo Group has made the most significant investment in the Nigerian Football Federation in recent times. In April 2017, the indigenous oil giant signed N2.5billion worth of sponsorship agreement that resuscitated the national team and increased their chance of qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Unlike other brands hoping to gain marketing advantage, Aiteo’s investment has been described as a corporate social responsibility initiative targeted at enhancing the growth of Nigerian football, supporting its youth and fostering national unity. Pinnick described Aiteo’s contribution as “a heartwarming landmark in the history of football sponsorship in Nigeria.”Aiteo Group organised the maiden edition of Aiteo-NFF Awards, in celebration of Nigerian footballers, past and present in February 2018. At the award ceremony, it was revealed that Aiteo paid the sum of $600,000 and N320 million to cover its contractual obligation of providing support to the technical crew of the Super Eagles for the whole of 2018, well beyond the WorldCup.The company also signed a N2.5billion partnership to support the country’s longest running federation’s cup, now renamed Aiteo Cup in June 2017. In January 2018, Aiteo sponsored the Confederation of African Football Awards which held in Ghana.Coca Cola threw its weight behind the Eagles in January as official soft drink partners for the World Cup, snatching theteam from its arch-rival, Pepsi. The Coca‑Cola partnership with the NFF and the sponsorship of all the Nigerian National Football teams will span an uninterrupted period of five years, after which there will be an opportunity for renewal. The Nigeria Football Federation signed a N1.4 billion five-year deal with the beverage company in January 2018. Coca-Cola (International) is also one of the official sponsors of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The company has consistently organised a World Cup trophy global tour since the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The rekindled relationship and interest has been linked to Amaju Pinnick’s great leadership skillsand ability to get the buy-in of big brands.Amaju Pinnick, president, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), mentioned that the potential in Nigerian sports is limitless, adding, however, that the government needs to create an enabling environment for the sports industry to thrive.“Twenty-five years ago, the British government invested £200 million in the Premier League and today, the EPL is worth £8 billion. If we create enabling environment with proper structure, sports can contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP more than any other sector,” said Pinnick.“We must engage reputable brands to drive sponsorship for the national team. If every geopolitical zone concentrates on its strengths and harness them properly, Nigeria will fly the flags high at international competitions and thus get global attention for investors to come in and invest,” he added.Nigerian Breweries Plc, the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, serving both Nigerian and West African markets with product including Star Lager and Amstel Malta. The company’s partnership with NFF is valid for five years and worth N2.2 billion. Also, Star Lager has become the official beer sponsor of the Super Eagles to this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.Jordi Borrut Bel, NB Plc’s Managing Director/CEO pledged the total commitment of their establishments to every letter of the contract.Bel reiterated: “We are indeed delighted about this partnership between Nigerian Breweries plc and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). This relationship provides us an opportunity to celebrate the true Nigerian spirit that is fuelled by patriotism, passion and desire for victory, through the platform of Football.”Super EaglesThe Nigeria Football Federation and WAPIC Insurance plc recently signed an agreement worth N500million that conferred on the insurance giant the title of ‘Official Insurance Services Provider and Co-Sponsor of the NFF.’The contract provides excellent safety and security for National Team players and officials while on duty and offer a well –paved route for them to have a better future through proper pension fund.Yinka Adekoya, Managing Director, WAPIC Insurance plc, affirmed that the company was excited to team up with Nigerian Football, given the huge role that football plays in nation –building and the excitement that it generates among the youth and adults alike.“The NFF is an organisation that is making Nigeria proud through the excellent results of the National Teams and WAPIC is a top financial institution seeking to be the most enjoyable company to do business with and to become a top 20 financial services institution in Nigeria by 2019.”Cadbury Nigeria Plc, manufacturers of TomTom, partnered with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) as the ‘Official Candy of the Super Eagles’ in February 2018. The agreement will last for three years in the initial period with an option of renewal. EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu tells banks to provide list of corrupt customers

Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of EFCC has asked banks to provide a list of corrupt customers ahead of the 2019 general elections.  Magu urged compliance officers of banks in Nigeria to be more diligent in their responsibilities, as a way of tackling money laundering and other fraudulent practices in the sector. Hesaid compliance officers in various banks in Nigeria must also take ownership of the fight against corruption, which he described as one of the problems bedeviling the banking industry.Speaking during an interactive session with Association of Chief Compliance Officers of Banks in Nigeria, ACCOBIN, in Lagos on Thursday, May 31, 2018, Magu said: “We need to find a common ground to work together. You have a responsibility to fight corruption.“The Commission is ready to partner with you to ensure a healthy economy. We are ready to assist the banks in recovering their debts, but compliance officers must ensure due diligence, especially when giving out loans to customers. I know you sometimes need to protect some of your customers.  But it is sometimes better that you do without some of these people;otherwise, you will be seen as conspiring with them to steal public funds.”He further charged banks’ compliance officers to always provide the Commission with necessary information to assist it in carrying out its responsibilities, adding that “We must work together to save this country. Most of the banks are sitting on water. In fact, some of these banks are almost collapsing.“I know there are questions you can’task, particularly it involves some individuals, but if you give us information on such people, we will move in. If there are fundamental issues that can affect your banks, you can give us the information, especially as another general election approaches. I don’t want to be charging banks alongside suspected criminals because doing so can wreak havoc on the economy. It will even discourage investors from coming to the country.”

Police IG, Ibrahim Idris tells Federal High court to declare the Senate's insistence his appearance as 'illegal'

The Inspector of General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to declare as unconstitutional, the Senate’s insistence that he must appear for a legislative hearing in person.  He insisted in his suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/457/2018 and filed on April 30, 2018, that his personal appearance before the Senate was unnecessary because the issues for which he was invited were not personal. The IGP, through his lawyer, Alex Izinyon (SAN), who filed the suit on his behalf, joined the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as defendants in his suit.  He noted that if he was to personally honour every invitation sent to the office of the IGP, there would be no time to attend to his main responsibilities. The Senate had in a letter dated April 25, 2018, invited theIGP to appear before it in relation to the purported inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye and the killings in many parts of the country.  The IGP, on April 26, refused to appear before the Senate but delegated the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) and Commissioner of Police, Kogi State to represent him at the Senate.  But the Senate refused to grant an audience to the two representatives, insisting that the IGP must personally appear for the legislative hearing.  The upper legislative chamber then rescheduled the meeting for May 2 and again directed that the IGP must honour its invitation in person. The IGP, in a supporting affidavit accompanying his suit, said his action of delegating his subordinates to appear before the Senate was backed by law.He said under the Constitution and Police Act, he had the power to delegate responsibilities, including directing some of his subordinates to represent him wherever he was  invited, more so that his choice of the DIG (Operations) and CP, Kogi State was on the basis that they were conversant with the issues for which he was invited. Both Saraki and the Senate, in a counter-affidavit, accused the IGP of using the court to shield himself from being scrutinised by the legislature. They stated that the IGP’s representatives were denied audience because of “the weighty issues which require clarification as they touched on the very soul of our national existence and in order to ensure fruitful and meaningful deliberations.”  They prayed the court to reject the plaintiff’s prayers and dismiss the suit. Justice John Tsoho on Thursday adjourned till June 29 for the hearing of the suit.

US priest abuse victims reach $210m settlement

A Catholic Church archdiocese in the US state of Minnesota reached a $210 million settlement Thursday with hundreds of victims of clergy abuse, resolving a years-long battle. The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, which filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015 citing its exposure to an onslaught of abuse claims, said the settlement would resolve all of those claims, conclude the bankruptcy process and establish atrust fund for 450 victims.“Abuse survivors could expect payments soon after the court approves the plan,” said ArchbishopBernard Hebda.“I am grateful for all of the victim survivors who have bravely come forward,” he said at a news conference. “I recognize that the abuse stole so much from you… The church let you down. I’m very sorry.” citizenVictims welcomed the settlement with relief, but stressed that their emotional scars remained.“This is a great day for us and all of the survivors,” said Jamie Heutmaker at a separate news conference.Marie Mielke added: “What was done to me has really interfered with the joy of being a mother.”A 2013 Minnesota law was creditedby victims with opening the flood gates in the Midwestern state, by allowing for the filing of lawsuits in abuse cases dating back decades. The settlement ended one of the lengthiest processes of reckoning of church abuse cases in the US — a protracted battle victims blamed on the preemptive  bankruptcy filing.Experts speaking at the Vatican said in 2012 the number of abused American minors is probably close to 100,000, with cases dating back to 1950 and implicating thousands of clerics.

2019: House of Reps rejects electronic voting

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, May 31 rejected the use of electronic voting system in the forthcoming 2019 general elections. The rejection was sequel to a bill, which seeks to amend the provisions of the Electoral Act, considered by the Committee of the Whole, NAN reports. - that the lawmakers, however, approved the use of smart card readers for accreditation before elections are conducted in any polling unit across the country. The Bill for an Act to Amend the Provisions of the Electoral Act, No. 6, 2010 to further improve the Electoral Process and for Related Matters has 41 clauses. The lawmakers, in their submission, removed the amendment in the bill which seeks to introduce the use of electronic voting into the Electoral Act.They resolved that while an electronic instrument; the card reader, will be used only for accreditation, the voting will be strictly done manually.During the consideration, Rep Chinda Ogundu (Rivers-PDP) had sought to add a new amendment that the election in any polling unitshould be suspended if the card reader malfunctioned until another functional card reader is brought. The amendment reads:“The presiding officer shall use the smartcard reader for accreditation of voters. Where the smartcard fails in any unit, the election in that unit will be suspended and conducted within 24 hours.”This, however, triggered reactions from some of the lawmakers, who warned of the delay such suspension would cause.Reacting, the deputy speaker, Yusuf Lasun (Osun-APC), who presided over the section, said:“If the card reader fails to read in a polling unit, that means you are delaying resultof the election in the entire ward.”Ogundu, on his part, argued that there would be no delay except in cases where the result from the polling unit would affect the entire ward’s outcome.“If that unit’s result will not affect the entire outcome, INEC doesn’t have to go back. But if it will affect the outcome, their (INEC) policy is that they must go back to do the accreditation with a card reader and conduct the election,”he said. They also proposed for the disqualification of a candidate if he or she is found to have filed fake documents for his qualification, while his party would pay a fine of N1 million. The proposal also seeks to disqualify the candidate from participating in a fresh electionin cases where the initial election has been conducted. However, the House did not pass the bill as there are two clauses in it awaiting approval. The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, had previously stated thatelectronic voting will not be used in 2019.The INEC boss however, said that electronics would be deployed in the collation and transmission of elections results.
