Man United vs Tottenham: What Mourinho told his players at half-time before 3-0 thrashing

Manchester United defender, Luke Shaw has revealed what they were told by manager, Jose Mourinho during half time of their 3-0 loss to Tottenham on Monday night.

Shaw said he could not quite understand how United managed to let their performance level slip so much in the second half, with Mourinho full of praises for them at half-time.

Mourinho was delighted with United’s first-half display against Tottenham and told his players they were in total control at half-time, according to Shaw.

The Red Devils were unlucky not to take the lead at Old Trafford, as their first-half endeavour was undone by goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura in a clinical second half.

“You look at the first half, we were outstanding,” Shaw told MUTV.

“We had a lot of chances to put the game to bed. If we score, it’s game over.

“Second half, we spoke inside, Jose said ‘they haven’t had one corner, one cross, one dangerous opportunity.

‘Actually to be fair they did, a couple of times we made mistakes in the first half. But no corners, no crosses, nothing.’

“But first corner they get comes the goal. Even then maybe we should have been relaxed, it’s only one goal, we still had time.

“But then comes another mistake, another silly, stupid goal. We were so on top, so it’s really disappointing.

“Everyone in the dressing room is really sad, especially after the first half we had. Big thank you to the fans for the way they supported us, even when we were down 3-0 they were amazing.”

Lifeless president: Presidency speaks on Trump’s comment, foreign powers deciding Buhari’s re-election bid

The Presidency has said its not worried by the comment allegedly credited to the United States, US, President, Donald Trump about President Muhammadu Buhari.

Financial Times had reported that Trump after meeting with Buhari a few months ago, said he never wanted to meet someone as “lifeless” as Buhari again.

Reacting to the report, Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said the presidency has no official position on the alleged comment.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, Adesina said the information was not ascribed to anybody, hence it is “not verified”.

“If it is unverified as it came out, then the presidency has no comment. It does not pass any concerns of good journalism,” he said.

On whether the comment would affect Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid, Adesina stressed that the statement was inconsequential.

“No, it won’t. Nigerians are the ones that would ultimately elect their president; no foreign power will determine who gets elected,” he said.

How we made Jonathan concede defeat to Buhari in 2015 – Abdusalami Abubakar

A Former military head of state, General Abdusalami Abubakar (retd), has revealed the process that led to former President Goodluck Jonathan conceding defeat to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

The former military leader made the disclosure at the 2018 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, yesterday.

Abdulsalami said that the genesis of Africa’s political problems was “the action of its sit-tight leaders, who amend the constitution in order to perpetuate themselves.”

“These leaders have the tendency to manipulate very vital democratic organs, particularly the legislature and, sometimes, the judiciary, to suppress any dissenting voice.

“Despite all these, Africa is now harvesting an influx of leaders and politicians. The young people who are emerging are more educated and internationally exposed than the current old leaders we have all over Africa.

“And these young men and women are trying to make their marks. However, as you know, they are hampered by the high cost of electioneering in developing countries and, indeed, the world,” he said.

General Abubakar, gave a keynote address on “Political transitions in Africa: Lessons to learn.”

He gave credit to Jonathan for not only conceding defeat, but for congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari who was a candidate of the opposition party.

He added, “All analyses of political trend in the run up to Nigeria’s 2015 general elections pointed to above scenario playing out. Very early on, I teamed up with some well-meaning non-partisan stakeholders and elder statesmen to engage the key contestants and party leaders with a view to forestalling such a scenario.

“Under the auspices of a peace initiative, we brokered an agreement with leading contestants, in form of a Memorandum of Understanding, for them to accept the outcome of the elections, preach cordiality in relations and conduct peaceful campaigns.

“It is gratifying to note that, courtesy of our humble effort and the goodwill extended to it by the contestants and the Nigerian public, the 2015 national elections were conducted peacefully.”

“To his eternal credit, the then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost the polls had the magnanimity to concede defeat and congratulate the candidate of the opposition party. In the end, peace, amity and political stability prevailed in the land.”

Dangote: Kogi reacts to ‘diversion of N3bn tax’

Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) on Monday reacted to the allegation that it diverted N3billion “paid as tax” by the Dangote Group

It said the figure being claimed as purported tax proceeds from Dangote Cement and its subsidiaries operating in the state was spurious and unfounded.

Mrs Hassana Salahu, the Director of Administration and Corporate Affairs at KIRS, while addressing the issue in Lokoja, disclosed that the monthly revenue the state realised from Dangote Group was N65million.

NAN quoted her as saying that the organisation’s revenue accounts were domiciled in the governor’s office, denying the existence of any other accounts outside the ones approved by the government.

Salahu explained that the Chairman of KIRS, Mr Yakubu Oseni, was not a signatory to any of the accounts, saying that the service operates cashless operations.

The director said that the last time Dangote Group remitted as much as N1 billion to the KIRS was in 2016 and that the amount was an accumulation of unremitted taxes for years.

Salahu dismissed the allegation in its entirety, describing it as “fake and hate speech”.

Buhari: Fani-Kayode reacts to Trump’s comment, President’s stand on rule of law

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has reacted to President Donald Trump’s description of President Muhammadu Buhari as “lifeless”.

Trump reportedly made the statement shortly after a meeting between the two leaders on April 30.

Buhari, the first sub-Saharan Africa president to meet Trump since he was sworn in as the 45th American president, was in the US for bilateral talks.

After the meeting, Trump, according to the Financial Times, told his aides that he never wanted to meet someone as “lifeless” as Buhari again.

Reacting, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain said Buhari’s actions had caused him ridicule.

The former minister also condemned Buhari’s statement at the opening ceremony of the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on Monday.

The President, in his speech, urged lawyers to put national security over and above the rule of law.

On Tuesday, Fani-Kayode said: “The greatest threat to national security and the national interest is a President that cannot appreciate the sanctity of the rule of law and the sacrosanct nature of the constitution.

“If this rhetoric of national interest and national security being more important than the rule of law continues it will have grave, disastrous and cataclysmic consequences for our country.

“It will lead to strong resistance, subversion of the state, conflict, war and the disintegration of Nigeria.

“This is because we are not prepared to live in or accept the imposition of a totalitarian police state where dissent, opposition, free speech, human rights and civil liberties have no place.”

3.Islamic State claims responsibility for western Libya checkpoint attack

Islamic State claimed responsibility for a gun attack on a checkpoint east of the Libyan capital Tripoli earlier this week, the group’s Amaq news agency said on Saturday.

Thursday’s attack took place between the towns of Zliten and Khoms on the coastal road leading from Tripoli to the port city of Misrata, an area in which members of the Islamist militant group are known to be operating, according to the Zliten mayor.

Amaq said “seven Libyan road security personnel were killed” in the attack by Islamic State fighters, while around 10 more were wounded. It provided no evidence.

North Korea's state-controlled newspaper on Sunday accused the United States of "double-dealing" and "hatching a criminal plot" against Pyongyang, after Washington abruptly canceled a visit by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Negotiations have been all but deadlocked since U.S. President Donald Trump’s summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June.

Pompeo has pressed for tangible steps toward North Korea’s abandonment of its nuclear arsenal while Pyongyang is demanding that Washington first make concessions of its own.

North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper said U.S. special units based in Japan were staging an air drill aimed at “the infiltration into Pyongyang”, citing a South Korean media outlet.

Jim Iyke speaks on reported arrest at Lagos Airport

Controversial Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, has opened up on his reported arrest at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport Lagos.

On Monday, the popular actor was captured in a video that went viral on social media which show him in a bit of an altercation with law enforcement officers at the airport over a case of alleged assault.

But speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday evening, Jim Iyke denied assaulting anyone at the airport saying, “people are just amazing, the truth is that I was running late for a flight in Abuja, and my people had sent my luggage a flight ahead. I tried hard not to miss the flight, but by the time I made it to the gate, the captain had almost shut the aircraft.”

He explained further that one of the security guards close by got too eager and got involved.

“One of the security guards who saw me struggling to make my way in got overzealous and got into an argument with my PA. Then they started exchanging words and pointing fingers at the heat of the moment.

“At the end of the day, we couldn’t even make it (the flight) and when we were coming back, the airport assistant went to call the police and said my Personal Assistant hit his face and pushed him.

“But when the policeman saw that it was me, I told them to let us go downstairs to resolve the matter, it was an issue of tempers fraying. We then went downstairs and the matter was resolved. I even boarded the same Dana Air Craft and I was shocked upon my arrival to hear that I was arrested by the Police. Which Police?’

“I know that people need content, but let’s not blow things out of proportion, I am not the kind of person who will post a rejoinder on issues like this, because I will be fuelling the fire, but we are all human and we lose our temper at different points in our lives, especially with how rude and unprofessional people are and more bewildering is the fact that people never want to hear the other side of the story

“The funny part is that this guy they said I slapped came to pick me up at the lounge and took me to the plane. He got me a better seat and I gave him little change because I know the country is hard. We hugged and ended it on a great note.

“The manager himself took me to the plane and I told him to school his staff on how to treat people. Its sad the length that people will go to spread the fake news about people. Thank you for being one of the credible media houses who actually confirm news before publishing it,” Jim Iyke said.

EPL: Mourinho fighting for his job after Manchester United are battered by Spurs

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, is fighting to save his job after the crisis at the club deepened with another shambolic defeat, the UK Mirror reports.

United were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham, thanks to three second-half goals from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura (twice).

Tottenham fans taunted Mourinho with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, after Mauricio Pochettino’s side piled the pressure on the under-fire United boss.

Mourinho needed a win after United’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton, but watched on as his side lost for the second game running.

United have now lost two of their opening three Premier League fixtures, for the first time since the 1992/1993 season.

Mourinho now faces a battle to prove he is the man to turn around their fortunes. The Portuguese is already at odds with United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, over the latter’s failure to deliver all the transfer targets he identified this summer.

Woodward sat stoney-faced in the United directors’ box, as the team side unravelled before him. The Old Trafford supremo faces a tough decision over what to do to halt the current slide

Osinbajo demands answers from Babangida, Obasanjo, Jonathan over oil money

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo has questioned how oil money was spent under previous administrations.

Osinabjo called out former presidents like Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, while answering questions from Nigerians at a town hall meeting in Minnesota, United States on Sunday, according to a statement issued yesterday by his media aide, Laolu Akande.

On OPEC statistics on oil revenues accruable to Nigeria under successive administrations between 1990 and 2014, the Vice President said not much had been done in terms of infrastructure, despite the huge oil revenues.

“Under the IBB/Abacha administrations (1990 – 1998) Nigeria realised$199.8 billion; under the Obasanjo/Yar’Adua governments (1999 – 2009), the country got $401.1 billion; and during the Jonathan administration (2010 – 2014), Nigeria got $381.9 billion from oil revenues.

“The question that we must all ask is, what exactly happened to resources? The question that I asked is that where is the infrastructure?

“One of the critical things that we must bear in mind and see is that this government, despite earning $94 billion, up until 2017, we are spending more on infrastructure and capital than any previous governments; so we are spending N1.5 trillion on capital; that is the highest we have spent since 1990,” he said.

After the journalists reminded him that his side had lost 3-0, he said, “Just to finish, do you know the result?”

Holding up three fingers, he added, “3-0. 3-0. Do you know what this means?

“3-0. It also means, 3 Premierships and I won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together.

“Three for me… and two for them.”

Nigeria’s problem not restructuring – Osinbajo
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru

ABUJA – VICE President Yemi Osinbajo has said that the problem of Nigeria was not geographical restructuring rather prudent management of national resources and providing for the people properly.

Osinbajo also said prudent management of the nation’s resources and the provision of essential needs of the people were better ways of addressing Nigeria’s development challenges.

The Vice President stated this while fielding questions from a cross-section of Nigerians at a town hall meeting in Minnesota, the United States of America, Sunday.

According to him, “the problem with our country is not a matter of restructuring and we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into the argument that our problems stem from some geographical restructuring. It is about managing resources properly and providing for the people properly, that is what it is all about.

“I served for eight years as Attorney General in Lagos State and one of the chief issues that we fought for in Lagos state was what you call fiscal federalism. We felt that there was a need for the states to be stronger, for states to more or less determine their fortunes.

“So, for example, we went to court to contest the idea that every state should control, to a certain extent, its own resources (the so-called resource control debate). We were in court at that time up to the Supreme Court and the court ruled that oil-producing states should continue to get 13% derivation.

“While we were at the Supreme Court only the oil-producing states and Lagos were interested in resource control, everybody else was not interested in resource control for obvious reasons. Now, that is the way the argument has always gone, those who have the resources want to take all of it, while those who do not have want to share from others.”

Continuing, Osinbajo said, “My view is that we must create the environment that allows for people to realise themselves economically because that truly is what the challenge is with our country.”

The Vice President added that Buhari-led Federal Government has put in place an economic structure that was able to function properly despite previous challenges, particularly corruption that led to a slowdown in the economy.

On the impact of corruption on the economy and the solution adopted by the administration, he noted that “Unless we are able to deal with the fundamental questions especially around corruption, our economic circumstance will keep going one step forward, two steps backwards”.

He further said, “When you talk about corruption in Nigeria, the truth is stranger than fiction. It is the kind of thing that would cripple an economy anywhere because you simply don’t have the resources for the graft and the greed of the numbers of people who want to steal the resources.

“All that we have been able to deal with is grand corruption. When we started the TSA, the whole point was to aggregate all of the funds of government that were in private banks. So we put all of the money in the central bank so that we could at least see the movement of money and by doing so, we were able to save 50% of the corruption that was going on then.”

The Vice President in a statement by his spokesman, Laolu Akande assured Nigerians in the US that the Buhari’s government could be trusted, noting that “we can say for sure that the President is not going to sign off money and just bring it out to share.”

Relying on OPEC statistics on oil revenues accruable to Nigeria under successive administrations between 1990 and 2014, the Vice President said not much had been done in terms of infrastructure development despite the huge oil revenues realized by the country.

According to him, “Under the IBB / Abacha administrations (1990 – 1998) Nigeria realized$199.8 billion; under the Obasanjo / Yar’Adua governments (1999 – 2009), the country got $401.1 billion; and during the Jonathan administration (2010 – 2014), Nigeria got $381.9 billion from oil revenues.”

“The question that we must all ask is that what exactly happened to resources? The question that I asked is that where is the infrastructure.

“One of the critical things that we must bear in mind and see is that this government despite earning $94 billion, up until 2017, we are spending more on infrastructure and capital than any previous government, so we are spending N1.5 trillion on capital, that is the highest we have spent since 1990,” he added.

Responding to concerns on how government was utilizing recovered funds, the Vice President disclosed that the Buhari administration is committed to a transparent use of the funds in providing infrastructure.

He said: “What we are doing with the proceeds of corruption is by making it a line in the budget so that it can be accounted for properly; it is not a special fund somewhere that is just being used in any way, but as a single line in the budget for infrastructure which is our major spend.”

In the area of agriculture, Osinbajo said, the target was to attain self-sufficiency in the production of rice, tomato etc.

According to him, “We are doing a lot of work in agriculture. Take rice, for instance, we are doing a lot in rice production and we have increased local production such that we are no longer spending $5 million daily on rice import.

“Today, we are doing 11 million metric tons of paddy rice and are now importing only 2 per cent of what we used to import.”

On Nigeria’s rise on the World Bank’s ease of doing business index, he said though the challenges were daunting, the government was committed to going beyond the 24 places it moved up to in the last rankings.

The Vice President added that reforming Nigeria’s port system was top on the agenda of government as
efforts were underway to improve the turnaround time for cargo clearance at the ports.

According to him, “If you look at the port issue, for example, we must be able to clear our port system; people must be able to import and export their goods in hours not weeks and months.

“So, we have to work our port system and one of the things we have been able to do is what we call the National Trading Platform or the single window. We are getting to the point where we are going to launch the national trading platform where the whole port system is integrated into one.”

On improving the health budget at both the state and federal levels, he said the focus was on trying to do National Health Insurance because funding health care through budgeting has proved to be practically impossible.

He said, “We simply do not have the resources, the states and Federal Government cannot do enough. So, the National Health Insurance is a very basic part of it and we are currently working now with the World Bank and with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish a proper National Health Insurance Scheme.”

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the U.S., Mr Sylvanus Nsofor led other Nigerians within and outside the state of Minnesota to the meeting held in Minneapolis.

Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, arrested for slapping Dana Air employee

Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, was on Monday afternoon arrested at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, for slapping an employee of Dana Air.

It was gathered that the actor arrived late for his 12:15pm Abuja flight and the airline’s security personnel tried to help him to meet up with the flight by searching him.

According to eye witnesses, Iyke refused to be searched and pushed the man away, but the man insisted that he must be searched before boarding.

The man’s insistence was said to have angered Iyke, who slapped the man for ‘wasting his time.’

Iyke was later arrested by officers from the Airport Police Command.

Dana Air’s Media and Communications Manager, Kingsley Ezenwa, who confirmed the incident, said Iyke was, however, released, after he had apologised to the airline employee.

Ezenwa added that the actor eventually missed the flight, which was still on ground when the incident happened.

The Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, Alabi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, also confirmed the incident, saying that Iyke was released after he tendered an apology.

1.Buhari says rule of law must be subject to national interest

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said the principle of rule of law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest.

He said where national security and public interest were being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take the second place.

Buhari said these in an address he delivered at the opening of the 2018 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Abuja.

He said, “The rule of law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest.

2.Zimbabwe's president takes oath as U.S censure hangs over vote

Emmerson Mnangagwa urged Zimbabwe to unite behind his presidency on Sunday, as he took the oath of office following a divisive election that U.S. observers said had called the country’s democratic credentials into question.

The Constitutional Court confirmed Mnangagwa as president on Friday, dismissing a challenge by the man he beat in the July 30 ballot, Nelson Chamisa.

Thousands of Zimbabweans, some bussed in, and foreign leaders including South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Paul Kagame of Rwanda gathered at Harare’s national stadium for Sunday’s swearing-in.

A local official and a resident on Thursday said at least four people had been killed in the attack, among them security personnel.

Libya has seen occasional attacks by Islamist militants who have benefited from the turmoil that followed a NATO-backed uprising in 2011.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced his candidacy on Sunday for a ruling party leadership election he is expected to win, despite low expectations for his economic policies and doubts over his push to revise the pacifist constitution.

5. North Korea newspaper blasts 'double-dealing' U.S. after Pompeo's trip canceled

North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper said U.S. special units based in Japan were staging an air drill aimed at “the infiltration into Pyongyang”, citing a South Korean media

Reducing the 2019 presidential election to a trek contest shows how stupid these politicians think we are

I have had a hard time figuring out what was going through the mind of presidency spokesperson, Garba Shehu, when he issued the following statement:

“I think there are two things here; one is to say that the president is responsive to the enormous support and commitment of his own people that had come out in their numbers to see him and he just decided that he couldn’t go on riding in a black vehicle and he came out and walked the distance.

“The second thing, he is curious that these days, one or two people who are aspiring to be president are campaigning on their youthfulness and good health.

“I think the president has done one thing today – that the issue is not how old one is but how fit he is; how healthy he is. Now that the president has proven his fitness and well-being, to continue in office is a settled matter

“I think that if people want to campaign against him they should do so on issues that are of significance to Nigerians. The president is fit, he is healthy; he is good to go for second term.”

Shehu and his fellow courtiers in the presidency are famous for issuing plenty of banal, irresponsible statements. You have to say this one ranks up there among their silliest because it was totally uncalled for, ill timed and asinine.

The most annoying thing that came out of Shehu’s 'show of fitness' statement is that a handful of presidential aspirants have been flaunting pictures of how fit they are at a time of a crippling economy, decrepit infrastructure, poor power supply, soaring unemployment and rising inequality.

Hence in one Sallah break, we have essentially reduced a most important and decisive election for our country to a fitness circus.

It’s just seven months before the presidential elections and you would think the contenders should be taking on themselves on policy proposals, the Boko Haram and herdsmen crises and of course an economy that is so moribund, businesses have been packing up shop and sending millions into the unemployment market.

We can do better and we should indeed do better. I am looking forward to the first presidential debate starring candidates Buhari, Atiku, Saraki, Sowore, Moghalu and Durotoye. Let’s stop with the crap that is the fitness Olympics and focus on the issues and the issues only.

Our country is on the brink as it were. The least our presidential contestants can do is treat this season with all the seriousness it deserves.

Why Saraki must quit as Senate President – Hon. Gbajabiamila

The leader of the House of Representatives and chairman of the APC Caucus, Femi Gbajabiamila, has explained why Bukola Saraki must step down as the Senate President.

In an interview with Premium Times, Gbajabiamila said that though he was family friend with Saraki, this was based on the “letter of the law”.

According to the lawmaker who cited the US Congress as example, it was not about impeachment, but Saraki’s eligibility for the office he occupies.

“The Senate President is a family friend I grew up with and did not know or meet in politics. That’s why this has been particularly difficult for me and I wish the situation was not what it is now. I believe beyond the 2/3rds debate, a constitution or law is interpreted based on the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. If a provision is ambiguous as it apparently is now you look at the intention of the drafters and framers if the constitution.

“So question is – could it have been the intention of the framers that a minority or opposition member would be a senate president? The answer is clearly no. Any other interpretation will lead to absurdity. If we say yes the law did not mind a situation where such would happen then it means an opposition senate president can use his position to make sure the ruling party/government fails. It would be in his interest to do so, so as to give his opposition party the opportunity to take over government. This could never have been the intention.

“If I were the senate president and I belonged to the opposition I would make sure the House did not reconvene so the money needed to finance the budget would not be approved by the National Assembly. Or what stops an opposition senate president from appointing all opposition members as committee chairmen including committees needed to make the government function?

“The midterm elections are coming up in the US in November. If the democrats should regain control of the Congress as speculated Speaker Ryan automatically steps down.

“Nowhere in the world that I know where constitutional democracy is practiced does the minority party occupy headship of the legislature. Now the provision commonly referred to that the whole House shall elect to mean the whole House shall elect from among the candidates produced by the majority party.

“This is why I said then that the House elected Tambuwal and not PDP. Even the PDP knows this and that is why even though here was ample opportunity to elect a PDP member as senate president because they were in the majority on the day of election they did not present a candidate.

“So it really isn’t about impeachment or 2/3rds. It’s about office eligibility. This is my take. Like I said I have a relationship with the senate president that goes beyond politics and wish it hadn’t come to this but it is what it is,” Gbajabiamila said.

2019 elections: Vote for APC, reject Saraki, PDP – Oyedepo tells electorates

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Mr Iyiola Oyedepo, has urged the people of the state to vote for His party during the 2019 general elections.

He told the people of the state not to forget the hardship they had allegedly been subjected to since 2003 under the leadership of Dr Bukola Saraki, the current administration and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Oyedepo, in his Eid-el-Kabir message, called on Muslim faithful to use the occasion of the celebration to pray for the rescue of the state.

“Poverty, hunger, misery and despondency are everywhere and on every face of the people of the state”, NAN quoted him as saying.

“Succeeding governments since 2003 have pauperised the generality of the people of the state; the government has no programme that can benefit the masses”.

According to him, successive governments since 2003 only carried out projects that have no direct impact on the lives of the common people.

“What is the benefit of Aviation College, Metropolitan Square, Football Academy, Shonga Farm and Underpass to the ordinary people on the streets?

“All these projects have no direct benefit on the masses of the state,” Oyedepo said.

He also challenged the state government to disclose how much the Aviation College had generated as revenue since its establishment.

“You should not forget all these wasteful projects when voting during next year’s general election; Kwara people should vote wisely,” he said.

Oyedepo claimed that the state government since 2003 had received over N1 trillion in federal allocation, Value Added Tax, bonds, internally generated revenue and Paris Club refund.

He also appealed to the people of the state to collect their voter’s card to enable them to vote for all APC candidates in the 2019 general elections

Emmanuel’s supporters hold Lagos rally as Akpabio’s godfather backs gov

The Akwa Ibom State Government has said nobody can deter Governor Udom Emmanuel from seeking re-election in 2019.  The Personal Assistant to the wife of the governor on Protocol Matters, Mrs Nsikan Ukpanah, who spoke to journalists during a rally by Emmanuel’s supporters in Lagos, on Saturday, said the governor’s followers were not intimidated.  Asked if ex-governor Godswill Akpabio’s defection to the All Progressives Congress could pose a problem for Emmanuel’s re-election bid, Ukpanah said, “The people of Akwa Ibom voted the governor when they didn’t even know him. Now that they know him, they will vote him again.  “We are not intimidated or afraid of anybody. One man is not enough to make the governor stay back; it is the people that matter. These people (supporters) that came out were not sponsored by the governor. They invited me. You can see them in the rain; they are passionate about the governor. That is to show you that the governor deserves a second term.”  Ukpanah advised Akwa Ibom indigenes in Lagos to transfer their voter cards to Uyo, “because we are going to vote the governor back to the seat of power.”  According to her, the people of Akwa Ibom are proud of Emmanuel and his feats since he assumed office in 2015.  Meanwhile, a political godfather of Senator Akpabio, Chief Michael Afangide, has joined the campaign for Emmanuel’s re-election.  Ninety-eight-year-old Afangide who is one of the frontline elders in the state, said he was supporting Emmanuel because of his detribalised approach to governance and seriousness in providing infrastructure in the state.  Afangide, who Akpabio, fondly calls the political leader of Essien Udim, where they both hail from, described himself as a founding father of the PDP.  He said in Uyo on Saturday that he supported former governor Victor Attah to lead the state for two terms likewise Akpabio, adding that he had no reason not to support the PDP and Emmanuel for two terms as governor.  Saying Akapbio is still his political godson, he added that the senator’s reason for leaving the PDP was personal to him and he cannot carry him (Afangide) along with him to the APC.  “For over 20 years, we have been building the PDP, I cannot build a thing of such magnitude and get up one day to abandon it for no good reason,” he said

IPOB: Detained Imo Women released with All Charges Struck Out

A Magistrate Court in Owere, Imo State, has ordered the release of over 100 women detained after a protest demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The women were arrested on August 18 and detained following allegations of alleged treason and unlawful assembly among other offences.

There have been campaigns and demands for their release, especially on social media. Report have emerged of how Global rights group, Amnesty International, on Friday condemned the detention of the women protesters describing it as a violation of their rights.

In an interview on Friday, a human rights lawyer who was at the court, Sam Amadi, confirmed their release, saying they were let off following a directive of the Imo State director of public prosecution.

“Yes, they have been released. The DPP gave a directive for the case against them to be struck out, earlier today and we took it to the magistrate, along with the detained women. The court ordered the immediate release of the women. All them who came to the court were released from there.

“Only about 12 of them who were not in this prison are expected to be released from the Okigwe prison where they are held. The case has also been struck out,” Mr Amadi said.

The lawyer who represented the women, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, confirmed the development.

Earlier on Friday, the Takeitback Movement spearheaded by Omoyele Sowore, a presidential aspirant of African Action Congress (AAC), demanded the release of the women.

“We strongly protest the unjust detention of over 100 Nigerian women in Owerri, Imo State, and are outraged at the biased treatment of Nigerians in their own country,” the movement said in a statement by its Director of Media and Communication, Rachel Onamusi-Kpiasi.

“Nigerians are slaughtered mercilessly at an increasingly disturbing frequency by herdsmen and the present government neither speaks nor acts. There have been zero arrests of the perpetrators and no compensation for the surviving victims. Boko Haram has decimated the North with scant retribution save for the present government swelling their coffers in ransom money.

“But women – our mothers, wives and sisters – who carried out a peaceful protest and caused neither harm nor disturbance to civic peace are quickly rounded up like cattle.”

The group said the government’s disregard for human rights of citizens is a disrespect for human life.

“The government’s disregard of the fundamental human rights of her citizens, as well as the reports of starvation of the arrested women since their incarceration points to a disrespect for human life and well-being. Carrying IPOB memorabilia can never be sufficient justification for this gross miscarriage of justice.

“The TakeitBack Movement fundamentally believes that all Nigerians have a right to peaceful protests. We also believe that raising questions about the restructuring of Nigeria is an inalienable right.

”Again, we ask, where is the justice? While men, who have maimed and killed hundreds walk around free and unfettered, our mothers from the South-east are in prison for raising a flag. We demand the immediate release of these women,” the group said.

About 300 APC members defect to PDP in Ebonyi

Former House of Assembly member, Bede Nwali, leads APC members to join PDP

- He assures the opposition party of their unalloyed support and commitment come 2019 general elections

- Muhammadu Buhari says the APC has the full understanding of Nigeria’s challenges

New round of defections have hit the All Progressives Congress (APC) as about 300 members of the party joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi state.

The defectors were led by a former House of Assembly member, Bede Nwali, on Thursday, August 23, at the PDP state secretariat in Abakaliki, Vanguard reports.

Nwali who spoke on behalf of the decampees thanked the PDP executives and members in Ebonyi local government area of the state for welcoming them back to the party.

He assured the party of their unalloyed support and commitment come 2019 general elections.

Nwali compared their years in the APC to being in Egypt. He said they decided to join the PDP following the enormous impact of the PDP-led government in the lives of Ebonyi people in less than three years of coming into power.

The state chairman of PDP, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, when receiving the decampees, thanked them for taking bold steps to join the PDP in the state.

The PDP family is impressed with the number of people that decamped today and this reveals that three APC governors will equally decamp to PDP by next week," Nwebonyi said.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has said the combined efforts of defectors and their backers in the opposition will not distract his administration from the good work it is doing for the benefit and development of Nigeria.

President Buhari, who spoke in Daura on Thursday, August 23, stressed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has the full understanding of Nigeria’s challenges and is encouraged by the support of Nigerians in addressing them, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report.

The president spoke at a lunch with some APC governors accompanied by some members of the national and state assemblies and commissioners.

Atiku, Saraki, Kwankwaso, others big disasters to Nigeria's democracy - BCO

The Buhari Campaign Organisation has said that the president has a 99.9% chance of winning the 2019 presidential election

- The organisation said top politicians have ruined Nigeria's democracy

- According to the BCO, Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Rabiu Kwankwaso and many others are big disasters to Nigeria's democracy

The President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, (BCO) has described the Senate president, Bukola Saraki; former vice president, Atiku Abubakar; Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso and the governor of Sokoto state, Aminu Tambuwal as Nigeria's biggest disasters.

The BCO said the top politicians have ruined Nigeria's democracy.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday, August 22, in Jos, Plateau state capital city, the national coordinator of the BCO, Danladi Pasali, labeled them as empty vessels that only make loud noise without physical muscles to match Buhari's integrity and popularity.

Daily Trust reports that Pasali said the defection of Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal and the rest from All Progressives Congress (APC) to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wouldn't serve as a threat to President Muhammadu Buhari's reelection bid come 2019.

Pasali said: "Their defections would not affect the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 and our party is ever ready to deliver on its campaign promises to Nigerians no matter the plot to distract the government."

"These are people who left PDP to join APC thinking of themselves and their personal ambition but under President Buhari they didn't get want they want and then left again. They are a big disaster to democracy," he said.

The BCO also said that President Buhari has a 99.9% chance of winning 2019 presidential election because he has succeeded in delivering 80 per cent of his electioneering campaign promises.

Meanwhile, eagleee.com previously reported that President Buhari’s 2019 re-election bid has been endorsed by the Etsu Patigi, Patigi local government area of Kwara state, Ibrahim Chatta-Umar.

APC speaks on Oshiomhole’s leaked letter to INEC chairman

The All Progressives Congress (APC), has reacted angrily to the leakage of a letter its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole wrote to the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

More than 200 murder suspects arrested in one day in Brazil

More than 200 people were arrested on murder charges in a single day across Brazil Friday in a coordinated sweep that emphasized the fight against femicide, the government said.

In all, well over 1,000 people were nabbed in the crime crackdown which was conducted by some 6,600 police officers around the country, according to updated figures from the public security ministry.

The sweep was part of government efforts to respond to ever-rising violent crime in Brazil, including a sharp increase in femicide, or murders specifically targeting women.

By the afternoon, 1,027 adults and 75 adolescents had been detained, authorities said.

Of these, 14 were arrested on charges of femicide and 143 others were accused of crimes related to the so-called Maria da Penha law, which since 2006 has strengthened penalties for domestic violence.

Among the others arrested were 225 people on standard murder charges, 224 on charges such as drug dealing or illegal firearms possession, and another 421 for other crimes.

Public security minister Raul Jungmann said a chief focus was on violence against women.

"What matters to us is protecting lives and above all combating femicide, this terrible and unacceptable crime," he said.

"Some crimes are more serious and repugnant, especially those against women."

A respected annual report released this month by the non-profit Brazilian Forum for Public Security found that Brazil's steady annual rise in homicides continues. There are now on average more than seven homicides an hour in Latin America's biggest country, up 2.9 percent on 2016 figures.

There was a six percent increase in murders of women in 2017.

These included 1,133 deaths as a result of femicide, or victims being deliberately targeted because they were women. The 60,018 rapes were up more than eight percent compared to 2016.

Global community backs Buhari’s 2nd term bid – Foreign minister

Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, has deflated the story making the rounds that the international community was strongly against President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term bid.

He also said that it was not true that Nigeria went into recession because international investors frightfully withdrew their funds because of President Buhari’s utterances and hardline posture against corruption.

His statement, however, drew the ire of Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who agreed that the poor performance of the present government would not elicit the support of the international community.

Onyeama stated that to the contrary, Nigeria under President Buhari had been enjoying the goodwill of the international community, to the extent of being supportive of his second term bid.

He made the remarks yesterday at Awgu, Enugu State, when Enugu West Peoples Assembly donated vehicles in support of President Buhari’s 2019 presidential election campaign.

Onyeama said: “The international community is very supportive of President Buhari. As you can see President Buhari has transformed our relationship with foreign countries and also the perception of Nigeria by foreign leaders. An evidence of that is the rate and number of high level foreign leaders that are coming to Nigeria.

“Next week, for instance, which is very unusual for any country, we are having the UK Prime Minister and two days later will be the visit of the German Chancellor. ‘’This shows what they feel about President Buhari; that Nigeria is now a country they want to do business with.”

On the allegation that President Buhari’s posture and speeches were scaring away international investors, Onyeama said:   “It’s on the contrary. Mr. President has taken the initiative to establish the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, PEBEC, chaired by the Vice President and the World Bank ranks countries according to ease of doing business.

“Within one year of Mr. President establishing this council, and taking measures to make doing business easier, Nigeria has jumped about 25 places in the World Bank ranking and has been promoting the most impressive jobs in Nigeria in the last one year.

So the whole world is seeing that Nigeria under President Buhari is more and more a place of doing business.”

The minister, while commending the gesture of  Enugu Peoples Assembly for donating towards the President’s re-election bid, indicted the Enugu State Government for non-performance in the past three years. “The state government spends so much money on advertisement but pensioners are not being paid.

We want a serious government because Enugu is matured to have a serious government. It is not winning the election that is the matter but plans for governance.

“It is not about building houses everywhere; I am looking for better governance in Enugu State. The people who elected leaders should be the ones dictating the pace of governance and not the other way round.”

Reacting to the minister’s claim yesterday, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, challenged him to name the countries supporting Buhari’s second term bid.

Afenifere’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said: “Well, he should be specific and name the countries in the international community that support him. The last time, we heard the United Kingdom talking about the killings in Nigeria. Also, the Americans talked about the killings in Nigeria. So, we want to know which of the international community is supporting Buhari’s second term. ‘’Is it Afghanistan, Iraq or Turkey?

He should name the world powers so that we can ask those countries if they think what is going on in Nigeria now should continue, except those international community are the ones I mentioned now like Iraq, Afghanistan or Turkey.” He’s lying, says Junaid Mohammed

Reacting in a similar vein, Second Republic lawmaker, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, said: “If I were a member of the media, I would dismiss the claim by Onyeama. He is lying, he knows he is lying. The international community he is purporting to be speaking for knows he is lying. ‘’The kind of characters, who have been brought into office speak volumes about the incompetence and irresponsibility of the Buhari administration.

‘’Because of his friend  he was made the foreign minister when he knows nothing about this country. That is why he has nothing to offer to this country. “That is why they will be claiming to speak on behalf of the international community. That is why nothing in this country moves and nothing is going to move.  We have the wrong people in sensitive positions.

‘’It is not in the nature of international diplomacy and international community to say so. I don’t think they are going to dignify the claims by the Buhari administration. But those, who have a connection with the international community, know that it has nothing but contempt for the Buhari administration because of poor performance.

‘’I was Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the House of Representatives in the Second Republic and I have contacts in the international community. I know what I am talking about. If they are relying on that and nothing more on performance and competence, Buhari is going to be disappointed. ‘’

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which spoke through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said the minister and APC leaders were deluding themselves. ‘’It is delusion. They are just deluding themselves. How can they say the international community is supporting President Buhari’s second term bid, in spite of his poor performance and failure? Why are you bothered about what they are saying? They are just deluding themselves,’’ the party said.

Transfer: Man City coach, Pep Guardiola speaks on signing Bravo’s replacement

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola has said that the club will not sign a replacement for goalkeeper, Claudio Bravo.

Bravo earlier this week suffered a rupture in the tendon of his left foot.

The Chilean shot-stopper, who joined City two seasons ago from Barcelona, is set to miss six months of action.

He flew to Barcelona for further tests on Thursday.

Guardiola, however, said he trusts Montenegro Under-21 keeper, Aro Muric to step in as back-up to City’s No.1, Ederson.

“Unfortunately with Claudio the first option was [for Muric] to come back because the window is closed,” Guardiola was quoted by Goal as saying.

“We have Aro and Grimshaw. They will be our three goalkeepers,” he said.

Guardiola’s men will clash with wolves on Saturday in the Premier League.

ADC attacks Buhari, says govt full of lies

The African Democratic Congress (ADC, has countered President Muhamadu Buhari’s claim of good governance in the last three years.

President Buhari had said that members of the opposition cannot fault the efforts his administration had made in its three major areas of focus, namely security, economy and the fight against corruption.

Buhari stated this in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Thursday in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, while hosting some state governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, some federal and state lawmakers and state commissioners to a lunch.

Buhari said he would continue to do what he was expected to do in the leadership position God had given him.

Disagreeing with Buhari’s claim, the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Chief Okey Nwosu, said it was unfortunate that Buhari had converted the exalted office of the President to a “lie manufacturing plant.”

Nwosu, whose party has been endorsed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said statistics from every credible organisation and even agencies of government showed that poverty and unemployment had worsened.

He further stated that the crisis in the Middle Belt had reached unprecedented levels under the Buhari administration and it was therefore deceptive of Buhari to claim that he had effectively tackled insecurity.

The ADC chairman said “Transparency International had exposed Buhari’s anti-graft war for the sham that it was and subsequently urged the President to focus on improving the lives of Nigerians rather than propaganda.

“Buhari has turned the Presidency into a lie manufacturing plant. He has no right to evaluate himself. It is Nigerians that are supposed to assess his performance. However, the facts speak for themselves. Under Buhari, poverty and unemployment have worsened.

“He claims to have effectively tackled insecurity but every day new IDP camps are springing up. I recently returned from Borno State where I saw IDP camps all over the place.”

Study reveals marijuana ages brain by three years

A new research report published in the journal of Alzheimer’s Disease has revealed that smoking cannabis ages the brain by an average of nearly three years.

According to New York Post, Marijuana was found to ramp up brain aging by 2.8 years making it worse for the mind than bipolar disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Schizophrenics’ brains were found to age by an even greater average of four years.

Boozing was also shown to age the organ by 0.6 years, the research adds.

Brain aging is defined as reduced blood flow through the organ.

Lead study author, Dr. Daniel Amen, founder of Amen Clinics, said: “The cannabis abuse finding was especially important, as our culture is starting to see marijuana as an innocuous substance. This study should give us pause about it.”

Reduced brain blood flow has previously been linked to strokes and dementia.

The researchers analyzed 62,454 brain scans from 31,227 people.

Scans were collected during both rest and concentration and taken from people aged between nine months and 105 years old to determine factors that contribute to brain aging.

Researchers analyzed the blood flow through 128 regions of each brain to determine how old they thought the individual was.

Once they learned the person’s actual age, they were able to measure the rate of accelerated aging.

Dr. George Perry, from the University of Texas, San Antonio, commented on the research, saying: “This is one of the first population-based imaging studies, and these large studies are essential to answer how to maintain brain structure and function during aging.”

The results also suggest bipolar disorder accelerates brain aging by 1.6 years, with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) speeding it up by 1.4 years.

No link was found between depression and brain aging.

Amen added: “Based on one of the largest brain imaging studies ever done, we can now track common disorders and behaviors that prematurely age the brain.

“Better treatment of these disorders can slow or even halt the process of brain aging.”

Study author, Sachit Egan, from Google, a partner in the study, added: “The results indicate that we can predict an individual’s age based on patterns of cerebral blood flow.

“Additionally, groundwork has been laid to further explore how common psychiatric disorders can influence healthy patterns of cerebral blood flow.”

The findings were published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Democrats face 'almost impossible map' to retake U.S. Senate

CHICAGO (Reuters) - One political analyst calls it "an almost impossible map." Others are even less optimistic.

But despite the Democrats' long odds to retake the U.S. Senate in November’s congressional elections, party strategists meeting in Chicago this week say the escalating legal troubles of President Donald Trump's former associates and corruption scandals engulfing Republicans could boost Democrats chances.

The path, however, remains difficult.

Democrats are defending two dozen Senate seats this cycle - including 10 in states Trump won in 2016, some by huge margins. They need a net total of two seats to seize control of the chamber.

Having a majority would allow the party to derail or stall much of Trump’s policy agenda and increase congressional oversight and investigation of the administration, as well as complicate future conservative nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court should another vacancy occur.

Stu Rothenberg, a non-partisan political analyst, called the Senate landscape "an almost impossible map" for Democrats. But, he added, given the headwinds facing Republicans, "the Senate could be in play."

In interviews at the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in Chicago, a dozen party strategists, party members and candidates discussed the party's path and strategy to winning back the Senate, which Democrats last controlled in 2014.

CRITICAL CONTESTS

Democrats say five races are particularly difficult this year. They are spending hundreds of millions of dollars defending them. Losing just one of the seats in West Virginia, Indiana, North Dakota, Montana and Missouri - all won by Trump in 2016 - could doom any shot of retaking the Senate.

An array of state polls give Democrats hope. Opinion surveys show toss-up races in North Dakota, Indiana and Missouri. In Montana, which Trump carried by 20 percentage points, incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Tester leads recent polls by an average of five percentage points. In West Virginia, which Trump carried by over 40 percentage points, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin is slightly ahead in recent polling.

“Those five states are clearly the biggest targets for Republicans,” said Geoffrey Skelley, a non-partisan analyst at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. “There’s two ways to look at the Senate map. It’s really bad for Democrats, but the flip side of this is that this is a perfect year for them to be defending it.”

A Republican operative working on Senate races said Democrats seeking re-election in states where Trump remains popular should be worried. "Their national party’s lurch to the left is doing nothing but turning off voters in these states and further damaging their vulnerable incumbents."

Florida's Senate fight concerns some Democrats. Polls show a tight race between incumbent Democratic Senator Bill Nelson and Republican challenger Rick Scott, the state's governor. Scott led Nelson by six percentage points in a Florida Atlantic University poll released on Tuesday.

While straining to hold all the states Trump won, Democrats are also focused on Arizona and Nevada, which strategists said are crucial pick-ups for the party.

In Arizona, where Republican Jeff Flake is retiring, Republicans are in a three-way nominating contest ahead of voting next Tuesday. On the Democratic side, Kyrsten Sinema leads in polls.

Senator Dean Heller of Nevada is considered the most vulnerable Republican incumbent. Party strategists said his vote to repeal parts of the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, has been a gift in a state with many retirees and where access to healthcare is a major issue.

Democrats need to hold all the states they are defending and win Nevada and Arizona to secure a one-seat Senate majority.

FOCUSING RESOURCES

Priorities USA and Senate Majority PAC, two Democratic Super PACs, are together spending at least $120 million on ads in Arizona, Nevada, West Virginia, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota and Indiana. Super PACs must operate separately from political campaigns but can raise and spend unlimited money.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s independent expenditure arm has made an initial television buy of $30 million in Arizona, Nevada, West Virginia, Indiana, Montana and North Dakota.

The party and outside groups also have started to pour resources into more long-shot opportunities to gain seats in Tennessee and Texas, Democrats said.

Recent polls have placed Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke within as few as two to four percentage points of Republican Senator Ted Cruz in Texas.

In Tennessee's open race, former Democratic governor Phil Bredesen, a popular moderate, is now in a close race with Republican congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, according to polls.

HEALTHCARE, TAXES AND CORRUPTION TOUTED AS WINNING MESSAGE

Internal Democratic polling shows that healthcare and the Republican tax cuts that some voters view as a giveaway to wealthy Americans and corporations are winning issues for Democrats this November.

"Critical issues, like healthcare, are really important to voters. And Republicans thought the tax cuts would be a winning issue, but it's turned into a loser," said Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist at the Chicago gathering. "We have these big issue trends working in our favor."

DNC chairman Tom Perez made clear that Democrats in Senate battles would highlight the legal troubles around Trump after the conviction this week of Trump's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and the guilty plea by his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

Cohen pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations. He testified that Trump had directed him to pay hush money to two women who claimed they had affairs with Trump, and the payments were made to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Trump, who has denied the affairs, says he paid Cohen out of personal funds and that the payments were not intended to benefit his campaign but to resolve a personal matter.

“The culture of corruption from this Republican leadership is out of control," Perez told the party's meeting

Bayelsa imposes curfew on Twon Brass over killing

The Bayelsa Government on Friday imposed a curfew on Twon Brass in the Brass Local Government Area of the state, where three were killed on Aug. 15.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Rear Adm. Gboribiogha Jonah retired, told a news conference in Yenagoa that the curfew would last from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.

He condemned the killing, which was blamed on political thugs at Ada-Ama Square in Twon Brass, saying that the curfew would be lifted only when peace returned to the community.

“The State Government has gathered that the violence was sponsored by some individuals for political purposes.

“We have direct law enforcement agencies to carry out thorough investigation into the activities of the hoodlums and ensure the prosecution of all persons that may be found culpable,” Jonah said.

The spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP. Asinim Butswat, had earlier said that the incident involved suspected thugs, who claimed to be members of the APC and PDP in Brass.

“We have commenced investigation to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the crisis. We advise people to go about their normal activities,” said Butswat.

2019: APC speaks on internal division, blasts Senator Boroffice

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State has described the lawmaker representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, as a hater of the party.

The party accused the lawmaker of giving the erroneous impression that the party in the state is divided and disunited.

Senator Boroffice had during the week, warned that it will be suicidal for the APC in the state to contest the 2019 general elections as a divided house.

But reacting, to the party’s Director, Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, in a statement yesterday, described the Senator’s statement as “appalling and uncharitable.”

The statement added, “This statement gave the erroneous impression that the party is in a fray of sort and needed a peace maker to appease it.

“Far from it as he has presented it. The party is in good shape and is at work in harmony to defeat the opposition in the coming general election.

“Boroffice’s statement also passively expressed such lies that it was by his influence the APC was able to defeat the PDP in the 2016 gubernatorial election in the State.

“Everyone living in Ondo State knew the overt anti-party activities perpetrated by him to subvert the APC’s victory in the 2016 governorship election.

“For a man, who worked assiduously to hammer out an action plan for the opposition against us to come back preaching party unity and cohesion, sparks stupidity.

“We are definitely wary of such person and his Trojan horse.

“Senator Ajayi Boroffice has continually demonstrated his open hatred for our party, hence, he is not in a position to advise us in any way. He can pocket that.

“APC in Ondo State is already moving forward as one united family and working across the state to reach out to the electorate.

“Senator Boroffice is not bigger than the party; it is expedient for him to jump on the APC bandwagon for his own good.”
