Please Don’t Kill Me! – Teargassed Lawmaker Of Anambra State House Of Assembly Cries Out

Security Operatives Take Over Anambra State House Of Assembly

The resumed sitting of the Anambra State House of Assembly  today was not on a pleasant note as policemen blocked the entrance to the premises, while they also sprayed teargas into the atmosphere.
Recall that this will be the house’s first sitting after Naija News reported the Speaker of the House, Rita Maduagwu, was impeached on Tuesday, but she claimed that “They need two-thirds of our members to impeach the Speaker or the governor,” and that since they did not achieve that, “So, I’m still the Speaker.”
Sequel to her purported impeachment on Tuesday, a member of the House, Ikem Uzoezie of AgutaIi Constituency was installed as the new Speaker.
But Maduagwu later addressed the Press and said she remained the Speaker of the House, describing those who impeached her as “rascals.”
Hundreds of security operatives manned the Assembly area from the Alex Ekwueme Square entrance of the complex as from 8am.
Workers of the judiciary and others who had any business in the area were denied entrance.
Trouble began when a lawmaker mobilised some supposed supporters to the House, allegedly to show solidarity for Maduagwu.
Police, however, repelled the protesters with tear gas, causing, the entire environment to be filled with tear gas, while some policemen attempted to to ward off everybody in the area.
A member of the House, Mrs. Beverly Nkemdiche, who was affected by the teargas shouted and screamed on end, “They have killed me! I’m a member of the House. Please, don’t kill me…”
Journalists and other onlookers scampered for safety.

Guinea Bissau President Visits Buhari Ahead Of His Country’s Nov 18 Elections

President Jose Mario Of Guinea Bissau Visits Buhari To Seek Advice Ahead Of Country’s Elections

President Jose Mario Vaz of Guinea Bissau was at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, today, where he briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on the forthcoming general elections in his country.
NAN reports that legislative elections are expected to be held in Guinea-Bissau in December 2018 or January 2019.
They were scheduled for November 18 following an ECOWAS brokered agreement between President Mário Vaz and the opposition in April, but the electoral census will not be completed until November 20.
Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, President Mario Vaz said it is duty bound on his part to brief President Buhari, who is current chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, on development developments in Guinea Bissau.
Mario Vaz, who spoke in French, said he also used the opportunity to seek for advice from the Nigerian leader, whom he described as his senior brother.
I had the opportunity to brief him about the situation in Guinea Bissau – the ongoing Voters’ registration process going on in Guinea Bissau.
“As you may be aware of and international community may be aware of, Guinea Bissau was scheduled to hold elections on Nov. 18.
“But we have come to the conclusion that it won’t be possible, and that is the reason why I came to see my older brother so that I can seek his advice and brief him about the situation,’’ he said.
President Mario Vaz, therefore, described the outcome of his meeting with President Buhari as very fruitful and he would be going back home very much encouraged.
He pledged to adhere to all the advice given to him by the president, adding that he would also apply fully all the suggestions made during the meeting.
Mario Vaz, who has since left for Guinea Bissau, thanked President Buhari and the Nigerian government for their support and assistance to his country.
EMIRATCO recalls that the federal government recently approved 500,000 dollars electoral kits and number of vehicles to support the conduct of election in Guinea Bissau.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, confirmed this development in October when Jose Filho, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Guinea Bissau, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Will Otedola still run for Governorship election or is he just messing with us?

Otedola's entry into governorship race is good for Lagosians play No one knows if Otedola was joking when they said he was running (Instagram)

It’s been nearly two months since celebrity journalist Dele Momodu gleefully informed the world that billionaire businessman Femi Otedola is running for the office of Governor of Lagos.

“Breaking news: Lagos 2019 promises to be interesting. PDP offers Femi Otedola governorship ticket. He's accepted and personally confirmed to The Boss newspaper”, Momodu informed thousands of his followers on Twitter.
Everyone went to town with the story afterwards. The mainstream media ran editorials on it, blogs and online news sites curated for fun and this writer even chipped in with an opinion piece on what Otedola’s entry into the Lagos governorship race will mean for this city of 20 million people. How ridiculous and foolish I feel now!

It’s interesting that Otedola didn’t say a word in confirmation or denial of the story soon after Momodu fed the press and the general public with it. His silence immediately gave everyone the impression that he was indeed running and was waiting for a good time to make it all formal.
Fast forward several weeks after and Otedola is yet to confirm or deny that he is running. In any case, Momodu told us that Otedola will be running on the PDP platform. But like everyone now knows, the PDP has concluded its governorship primary election, with Jimi Agbaje emerging as its flagbearer.
Is Otedola mulling running on another platform? Has he purchased the governorship nomination form of another political party through a proxy? Why is Otedola keeping quiet if he is really serious about running for office?
This week, Lagos PDP godfather, Bode George, tells us that Otedola actually told him he was running. “Otedola told me himself on a flight in April that he’d be running for Lagos Governor”,  George said.
Femi Otedola has accepted to run for Lagos Governor under PDP – Dele Momodu play Femi Otedola has left everyone guessing (Dailypost)

The one inference we can draw at the moment is that Otedola wasn’t serious about running for governor ab initio. If he considered running, one has got to say he changed his mind just before the primaries—which is totally fine. But why fly the kite when you weren’t serious? Why not tell us you are no longer running rather than keep us hanging?
However, it may be time to question Momodu as well. Anyone who wants to run for the office of governor makes the pronouncement of his intent himself. Why did Momodu declare for Otedola? Who asks a journalist to make a formal declaration on his behalf and why would this journalist put the word out there like he is so certain, when he isn’t? What does all of these say about Momodu’s methods? Recall that it was the same Momodu who arranged this very curious interview with former Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in which she told us she is stricken with cancer

Oshiomhole has no moral ground to continue to be in politics, not to talk of being a party chairman - Bukola Saraki

Oshiomhole has nomoral ground to continue to be in politics, not to talk of being a party chairman - Bukola SarakiSenate President, Bukola Saraki on Wednesday hit out at the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, saying that he has lost all moral rights to remain in politics.   Speaking with journalists in Ilorin during the sixth remembrance prayer for his father, Saraki said Oshiomhole has ‘no locus standi to talk about morality in today’s Nigeria’s politics.“That must be a joke coming from Oshiomhole talking about moral ground. I think Oshiomhole has no locus standi to talk about morality today. Oshiomhole is somebody who has been told to have been collecting not even naira but dollars from candidates and he is being accused by his party’s aspirants and governors.I don’t think he has any moral ground, even to continue to be in politics, not to talk about being a chairman of a party. I remember in those days, even Oyegun, they never accused him of something like this.I have left that party. I’m sure the President, based on integrity, knows the right thing to do. So, on moral ground, he cannot speak.”The post Oshiomhole has nomoral ground to continue to be in politics, not to talk of being a party chairman - Bukola Saraki appeared first on emiratco blog

Lady narrates how she was sexually harassed and extorted by SARS officers and it's really troubling

A lady has narrated a very troubling encounter she had with SARS officers who harassed her in Port Harcourt. Olorogun Mabel Peters said she woke up sick and went to get drugs but by the time she got back to her estate, some armed officer approached her and asked for her papers. When they saw that the papers were complete, they asked for her company ID and she explained she doesn't have it on her at the moment. They immediately accused her of stealing a car and drove her to the station where they then changed their story and claimed that she is one of the criminals they received a call about. They ended up detaining her and seized her phone. She went on to accuse one of the officers of sexual harassment while she was in their custody. She said they eventually asked her to pay N100,00 and drove her to an ATM to withdraw the money. She wrote:@opetodolapo Today is definitely one of my worst days.. I woke up a bit feverish with slight headache so I cancelled my activities for the day, at about 6:30pm I decided to go get drugs, because my condition seemed to be getting serious and also get pizza for my mum just 7mins drive away from my estate..On getting back to my estate, a blue Prado jeep stopped right in front of me and some armed men on uniform came out asking me to park for a search, I obliged, they went through all the vehicle papers and drivers license etc very much complete..The next question I was asked was they needed to see my company Id ,I tried to explain to them I didn't have it on me because I just drove out to get pizza from the next bus stop and they said I was under arrest for stealing a vehicle and I couldn't give them an ID of where I work, I obliged and we drove to their station and the whole story changed..One of the officers made a phone call and he said I was among the criminals they received a call about.. I tried to beg, I even showed proof of the medications I got, they gave me a paper to make a statement,in the process they took my phones from me and started going through my phone, from my chats call logs down to my bank mails etc....After spending 2hrs with them they demanded for a sum of 2million naira as my bail, for a crime I do not know.. This is pure wickedness and evil... I never stole, robbed, violated any rules etc... We finally came to an agreement after keeping me hostage from 6pm till 12am that I should pay them 100,000naira..One of the officers even approached me trying to sexually harass me!! This same men didn't even mind the time they comfortably drove me to an ATM machine so I could make a withdrawal for them... We will have to sack some of you to implement N30k minimum wage- Governors tells Labour

The Nigerian Governors Forum last night had a meeting in Abuja to deliberate on the N30, 000 minimum wage being demanded by the Nigeria Labour Congress. After the meeting, the governors stated that the only way they can afford the N30, 000 minimum wage is to downsize the civil service. According to them, they cannot affot to pay that amount with their current meager revenue allocation. Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and  Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, said that a committee will be put together to meet with President Buhari to discuss the need for an increase in state revenue allocations .“Following a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum where we deliberated on the national minimum wage, governors resolved to re-strategise and put together another committee to meet with the President once again, to work out another formula towards quickly resolving the problem associated with the proposed N30.000 minimum wage which is impracticable unless labour agrees to a downsizing of the workforce all over the country or the Federal Government itself accedes to the review of the national revenue allocation formula. Members of the committee who were nominated to see the President include the governors of Lagos, Kebbi, Plateau, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi. Enugu and Kaduna.” he saidGovernor Yari said that he and his colleagues had seen the report of the Tripartite Committee report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari. The report suggested N30, 000 minimum wage. President Buhari last week received the rpeort and said he will study it and advice the national assembly members accordingly.Yari said that the committee did not consider the submission of the governors who had earlier said they could only afford to pay N22, 500 as minimum wage.“We have seen what has been presented to the President by the (Tripartite) Committee. As a member of the committee, our representative there said the committee did not take our submission of N22,500 because it came late. I am surprised. How can you do this without the input of the states because the states are the key stakeholders in this business. So, a situation whereby our report was not taken or considered by the Tripartite Committee … then I don’t know how the committee wants us to work.” he saidAccording to Governor Yari, the state governors really wnat to pay the N30, 000 but are currently constrained by their meager revenue.''We still say we want to pay,  but the issue is the ability to pay. If we say no, it is not about the ability to pay, just pay, I don’t know how this formulae will work and I don’t know how we can get a solution to the issue. We are paying N18,000 (as minimum wage today), but when the President assumed office, about 27 states were not able to pay, not that they chose not to pay. So, now you say N30,000, how many of them can pay? We will be bankrupt (if we pay). So as Nigerians, we should look at the issues seriously. While other people are saying that governors are riding jets and living in affluence, that one is not luxury but compulsory. Like Lagos that is paying about N7bn as salaries; if you say it should pay N30,000, now it will be N13bn. From our calculation, it is only Lagos State that will be able to pay N30,000. As Nigerians, this is our country; there is no other country we have and we should be fair to this country.”Speaking further, Governor Yari said “As for the way forward, we will continue to talk with Labour. Let them see reasons and difficulties some of us have. For instance, the money Lagos State is using to pay is not coming from Abuja. They have a way of getting their money from the IGR and that is why they can afford to pay. They get money through VAT (as well). Apart from Lagos, even Rivers State cannot afford to pay. So we have been crying out about this since 2011 but no one will listen.“One critical example is that some states ration their salaries while some others put everything they earn on the table and ask labour to come and see  and ask them to suggest how much should go for capital and personnel costs. Some say 70 per cent for personnel cost and 30 per cent for capital projects and yet the states cannot pay and they put the remaining as outstanding.”   The post We will have to sack some of you to implement N30k minimum wage- Governors tells Labour appeared first on emiratco Blog.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo - A Pastor only by name

Read the article by FFK below...No matter how hard he tries to make it look as if it is no big deal and no matter how much he ignores it and tries to brush it under the carpet, the 5.8 billion naira scandal in which the House of Representatives have indicted Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for theft, larceny, diversion, misapplication and misappropiation will not go away.No matter how much he tries to wash himself with his self-righteous soap and brush, the filthy stench of corruption and abuse of office will never leave him.No matter how many open markets he visits in a blaze of publicity and in a desperate attempt to prove that he is a man of the people, the bloated flies that customarily trail filth, garbage, open sewers and rejected goods will continue to follow him and raise fundamental questions about his infantile claim to holiness, infallibility and sainthood. Some have erroneously argued that Osinbajo could not have stolen the 5.8 billion or indulged in any form of wrongdoing because he is a Pastor. They also claim that the grievous, unproven and outrageous allegations that he has made against President Goodluck Jonathan, President Olusegun Obasanjo, the late President Umaru Yar'adua and indeed every single PDP-controlled Federal Government that was in power over the 16 years before our nation was afflicted with the Buhari plague and APC contagion three years ago must also be true, again because he is a Pastor. On both counts this is not only an intellectually lazy cotention but it is also pure hogwash. I say this because Osinbajo is far from being what many think he is. His conduct over the last three years has proved that conclusively. As far as I am concerned he is a Pastor only in name. In my view he is not a Pastor but an eager accomplice, common sidekick and ever-ready man-Friday to the most hated, despised, compromised, dishonest, brutal, divisive, incompetent, cruel and evil dictator that Nigeria has ever known.I say this because no real Pastor would do what he has done over the last three years and neither would any tolerate or participate in the evil that his boss and their government have unleashed on the Nigerian people since they came to power.Pastors see evil for what it is and fight it openly. Failing that they at least shun and condemn it. They certainly do not espouse it, enjoy it, wallow in it, encourage it, support it and thrive in its commission. They do not point fingers at the innocent and accuse them falsely and neither do they eulogise or deify the corrupt. They are not deceitful cowards who have sold their souls to the devil for cheap political gain, filthy lucre and a morsel at the tyrant's table. The truth is that it irritates me to no end when some refer to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as a Pastor. It is like referring to Judas Iscariot as a disciple of Jesus Christ or Rasputin as the Pope. The Bible says "thou shall know them by their fruits". It says "the devil presents itself as an angel of light". It speaks of "wolves in sheep's clothing". It talks about "shepherds that feed on the carcasses of their own flock".Osinbajo is a fake Pastor in the same way that Judas was a fake disciple and Rasputin was a fake priest. Like Judas and Rasputin he was secretly planted amongst the disciples and in the Church by satan. When you speak of Pastors you are referring to holy and selfless men who lift up, inspire and encourage others, who are filled with compassion and love, who are called to ministry by the Living God and who are deeply courageous and strong. These are tried and tested men and women who are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and the light of God. These are men and women that are driven by the quest for righteousness, justice and equity and who have no fear of tyrants, bullies or the agents of the devil. These are men and women who despise evil, wickedness and injustice and who support and assist the suffering, the deprived, the weak, the vulnerable, the wounded, the afflicted, the persecuted and the poor. These are men and women that speak truth to power and that give wicked rulers and heartless men of wealth and power sleepless nights. These are men and women that have successfully passed through the furnace of affliction, who have mastered their calling, who are clean-spirited, who are committed to spreading the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ fearlessly and who do not steal, kill, lie, bear false witness, falsely accuse, compromise with evil or seek to destroy their fellow human beings. When we talk about Pastors we are talking about a rare and special breed of people who are committed to   humanity, self-discipline and the work of God and who have chosen to answer the highest and most noble calling. When we talk about Pastors we are talking about men and women llik the late  Bishop Ajayi Crowther, the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa, the late Apostle Ayo Babalola, the late Rev. Timothy Obadare, Bishop David Oyedepo, Prophet T.B. Joshua, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, Dr. Paul Enenche, Bishop David Abioye, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Apostle Samson Suleiman, Dr. B.O. Ezekiel, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, Dr. Daniel Olukoya, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Archbishop Jasper Akinola, Bishop Emmanuel Gbonigi, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, Prophet Emmanuel Kobe, Pastor Rhoda Awiliki, Pastor Solomon Kayode Anjorin, Pastor Bayo Oladeji, Dr. Israel Akonji, Pastor Emmanuel Omata and so many others. When we talk about Pastors we are not talking about hopelessly compromised and morally challenged charlatans and crooked politicians like Osinbanjo who consistently attempt to defend the indefensible, who thrive on perfidy and falsehood, who  tell one hundred lies a day, who indulge in the most outrageous and brazen acts of corruption, who persecute the innocent, who collude with evil and bloodthirsty men, who encourage the perpetuation and commission of barbarity and wickedness, who turn a blind eye when lives are being destroyed, who refuse to raise their voices when innocent blood is being shed, who speak from both sides of their mouths and who encourage mass murder, genocide and ethnic cleansing. When we talk about Pastors we are talking about those that we revere, love and admire and not those that are only Pastor in name. The post Vice President Yemi Osinbajo - A Pastor only by name - by Femi Fani Kayode appeared first on emiratco Blog.

Woman left in coma after botched nose job in Mexico

A Dallas woman is fighting for her life after she went to Mexico for a nose job which wasn't successful. The botched procedure put real estate agent Laura Avila in a coma and her family is desperately trying to get her better medical care. Avila traveled to Ciudad Juarez last month to save money on the plastic surgery, as it's significantly cheaper there. But, according to her lawyer, the anesthesia used on her was administered incorrectly and way too early. The clinic staff allegedly left Avila under anesthesia for hours because the head doctor was running late. As a result, Laura suffered severe brain swelling and went into a coma. Laura was stuck in Mexico for 8 days before her family could finally transfer her to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where doctors revealed she'd have to be kept alive with breathing tubes and machines, or be taken off life support. The family now wants a second opinion in Dallas but they're having problems getting her admitted to a hospital in Dallas because she lacks insurance. Her family has now created a GoFundMe account to help pay for her treatment. The post Woman left in coma after botched nose job in Mexico appeared first on emiratco Blog.

ASUU STRIKE: STUDENTS HAVE TO STAY LONG AT HOME, AS DSS ARREST STRIKE LEADERS

The government seem not to be ready to negotiate with ASUU and they have even decided to take hard measures against the lecturers.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has detained the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapters of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) and Bauchi State University, Gadau, Dr Adamu Babayo.
The Vice Chairman of the association, Dr Ibrahim Maina, condemned the action at a joint press conference on Sunday in Bauchi.
Maina alleged that Babayo was detained by the DSS operatives on Sunday, when he was invited to the department’s headquarters in Bauchi.
He said: “the ASUU Chairman, Adamu Babayo was invited through a Short Service Message (SMS) which is not a formal way of invitation.
“On Friday he received a text message requesting him to report to the DSS office in Bauchi on Sunday. He went to the office together with some of the executives of the association.
“The DSS operatives requested other members of his entourage to leave and detained him in their office,” he said.
Maina said that the action was a violation of fundamental human rights and queried the DSS to explain the reasons behind the arrest.
“Let them explain to us why he was detained. That will give us the idea of what needs to be done.
“If the detention is in connection with the ongoing strike; it is a nationwide strike embarked on by the universities in the country and not a peculiar or personal problem.
What wrong have we done by pressing for our rights through the strike,” he queried.
Maina maintained that industrial action is the rights of a worker as enshrined in the civil service act, which enable workers to press home their demands.

2019: Ndigbo happy with Buhari on road construction – Ohanaeze

The apex Igbo organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo on Monday applauded President Muhammadu Buhari on the area of road construction in the region.

The National President of Ohanaeze Youth Council, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro made this known while briefing journalists in Abakaliki.

He, however, stated that the South east region will soon take a stand on who to support in the forthcoming general election.

Isiguzoro noted that Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are good presidential candidates but Igbo will soon decide on who to vote in the 2019 election.

He, however, called on Buhari to fulfill his pledge on reactivation of the famous Enugu Coal Mine, which he made during his campaign tour in 2015.

“In 2015, when President Muhammadu Buhari was seeking our votes, he did promise us that he would reactivate the ‘Enugu Coal Mine’ but till date the place is still moribund.

“And on who to vote as President come 2019, I want to state here categorically that we are yet to take a stand”, he stressed.

Isiguzoro also condemned the slow pace of work by contractors handling the ongoing rehabilitation of some federal roads in the region, noting that the delay had claimed so many lives.

“I must tell you that the people of South east region is happy with President Buhari’s ingenuity particularly in the area of road rehabilitation, like the Enugu-Onitsha, Enugu-Okigwe and Port Harcourt highways.

“So, we are using this opportunity to ask the contractors to hasty up because Christmas season is just around the corner. Another reason is that many lives have been lost on road accidents along those roads”, he added.

El-Zakzaky: Iranians threaten to overthrow Buhari

Some protesters in Iran have threatened to overthrow the government of President Muhammadfu Buhari in order to secure the release of Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

Zakyzaky has been in detention since December 2015 when his followers clashed with some soldiers in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The sect leader has been granted bail but the federal government has refused to free him.

In a trending video, the Iranians with different placards chanted “Free free Zakzaky”.

The leader of the protesters criticised the Buhari government over the continued detention of leader.

“The judge of Nigeria ordered that Zakzaky and his members to be freed but the government didn’t listen to that and so we are calling on them to free Zakzaky,” he said.

“The government of Nigeria should know that it cannot keep Zakzaky forever in the detention and in jail, In Sha Allah, by overthrowing the tyrannical government, we will free Zakzaky and teach Nigeria and its people a good lesson.”

Last week, the IMN lambasted the Nigeria Police for describing Shiites as terrorists.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International said its investigation shows that the horrific use of excessive force by soldiers and police led to the killing of at least 45 supporters of the IMN in two days.

AI disclosed that its researchers visited five different locations in Abuja and Nasarawa state where wounded IMN supporters were receiving treatment, including two locations where bodies were deposited.

“We have seen a shocking and unconscionable use of deadly force by soldiers and police against IMN members”, said Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria in a statement on Wednesday.

“Video footage and eyewitness testimonies consistently show that the Nigerian military dispersed peaceful gatherings by firing live ammunition without warning, in clear violation of Nigerian and international law.

“Those injured were shot in different parts of the body – head, neck, back, chest, shoulder, legs, arms – and some of them had multiple gunshot wounds. This pattern clearly shows soldiers and police approached IMN processions not to restore public order, but to kill.”

Senate moves to investigate NNPC over alleged diversion of NLNG’s N378b

The Senate has resolved to probe the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Maikanti Baru on resumption.

This is over the alleged diversion of N378 billion dividend from the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, to defray the cost of under-recovery in the importation of fuel.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki disclosed this in a statement signed by his media adviser and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

He said “Senate on resumption of plenary we will further probe the claims made before the Senator Ahmad Lawan’s Adhoc Committee by the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), on how and why the corporation was diverting the dividend from the Nigerian Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) to defray the cost of under-recovery in the importation of fuel”.

Saraki who gave this hint while reacting to questions from newsmen at the Ilorin Airport, admitted that he had received series of telephone calls on the issue by many concerned Nigerians and others who wanted to know the position of the Senate on the issues raised by the NNPC’s GMD before the Ahmad Lawan’s Adhoc Committee.

The Senate President averred that the disclosure by the NNPC boss in response to enquiries by the Senate adhoc committee probing the issue of illegal payment of subsidy on fuel, called for further investigation by the Senate and also showed that as alleged in a motion moved earlier by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, a lot of illegal and unapproved spendings are going on in the petroleum corporation.

In his words, “Let me assure Nigerians that there will be no cover up. We are confident that the adhoc committee will do a thorough job. All the issues will be unearthed. That is why when the Senate set up investigative committees on issues, we want Nigerians to have confidence in us that we do not act because we want to embark on a wild goose chase. There must be some serious issues to be looked into. The revelations by the NNPC’s GMD have justified the need for this investigation and they have shown that we are acting in good faith.

“When in my ruling on the motion raised by Senator Olujimi, I insisted that we want a transparent, honest and non-partisan investigation on the fuel subsidy issue, it was clear to me and my colleagues that there are certain irregularities being perpetrated and we should let Nigerians know the truth. That is why we set up the committee in the first place and to demonstrate the seriousness we attach to the issue, we decided that the adhoc committee should be led by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan.

“We are however shocked that the NNPC’s GMD was claiming that the illegal diversion of dividends from the NLNG which should be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation for the purpose of funding the fuel subsidy was done ‘in compliance with the National Assembly directive that NNPC as the supplier of last resort should, and has, maintained robust petrol supply’.

“So, if the National Assembly called on NNPC to carry out its legitimate duty of ensuring adequate fuel supply to Nigerians, the GMD logically thinks the corporation by that call has the license to perpetrate illegality, spend money without approval and violate appropriation laws. It is my belief that if the National Assembly said the corporation should perform its duty effectively as a supplier of fuel to Nigerians without exposing people to needless suffering, that ought to be done within the ambit of the law.

“This investigation will require the GMD to produce the approval given by the National Assembly and other necessary approving bodies authorizing the NNPC to divert the dividend from the NLNG investment, which ought to be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund belonging to the three tiers of government, for the payment of fuel subsidy.”

N30,000 Minimum wage: Medical, health workers vow to shutdown hospitals

The Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) has said it would join the indefinite strike championed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, over the controversy trailing the proposed N30,000 new minimum wage.

MHWUN President, Biobelomoye Josiah, made this known on Monday at a news conference in Abuja.

He said members of the union would withdraw their services and consequently shutdown operations in their various places of work by midnight today in compliance with the directives issued to affiliate unions by the NLC.

Josiah also said the government should be held responsible for any hardships that may occur owing to their withdrawal of services in hospitals nationwide.

He explained that the tripartite agreement which arrived at the N30,000.00 minimum wage increment has been jettisoned by the government, adding that the lacked the political will to review and implement the legitimate demands of the Nigerian workers:

His words: “You may recall our National Body, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the organised labour have called on all workers in Nigeria to gear up for an indefinite nationwide strike which will commence Mid-night today.

“This is as a result of the failure to implement the constitutional requiremnt of the upward review of the national minimum wage which is long over due.

“We call on our members to remain resolute and be committed to the effective and orderly implementation of the nationwide strike commencing Tuesday except the government has a change of heart before then. It’s very obvious that the N18,000.00 National Minimum wage is no longer feasible and it is a trivialisation of a living wage.

“The government should be held responsible for the hardship that might occur (in hospitals) during the strike which ab initio should have been avoided, if the right thing had been done.

“Therefore we call on the government to increase the minimum wage to N30,000 which is a compromise figure agreed by the government and labour,” he added

ASUU embarks on indefinite strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike with immediate effect.

The decision was announced at the end of an emergency meeting on Sunday night.

This came just as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is also preparing to commence a nationwide strike on Tuesday, October 6th, 2018 over a disagreement between the organised labour union and the governments on the N30,000 minimum wage.

Briefing newsmen after the closed-door meeting, ASUU president, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, said the strike will be total and with immediate effect.

He listed the reasons for their action to include: Failure on the side of the government to honour the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the federal government in 2017.

He also mentioned that renegotiation with ASUU which the government intentionally ignored with impunity was part of the reasons for the strike.

Professor Ogunyemi, therefore, directed all the state chapters to ensure full compliance until their demands are met.

“Basically, the only outstanding issue to be dealt with was the harmonisation of the 5th chapter of the report, and thereafter get the figures to be submitted to the government.

“The inaugural speech by Mr President included some very salient points, that caused me to reflect on the work of this committee, and one of it is that there is emphasis that the committee will by consensual agreement arrival at all their decisions and I think that was very important.

“Mr president went further to emphasis that the concern is not only for the welfare of the workers but also every other thing should be taken on board as it affects the county’s economy.

“So, it is a balance of the welfare of the workforce with the effect of the new Minimum Wage on the economy.

“He also underpinned his speech by emphasising the fact we earn to go above basic social protection for Nigerian workers, but also tie to the ability to pay, because I know that a lot of states are even having difficulty meeting the basic minimum wage,” he said.

The SGF also noted that 27 states were faced with the difficulty in the payment of the basic minimum wage that was agreed, saying that he was not making any excuse for them.

He added that the meeting would continue tomorrow (Monday), thereafter members of the tripartite committee would continue with their meeting.

“I want to assure all of you that once the report is concluded and ready, I will personaly ensure that Mr President receives and signs it immediately,” he said.

2019 election: Cleric raises alarm

The Senior Pastor, Father’s Touch Ministry Church, Nyanya, Abuja, Pastor Evans Idoko, has accused some politicians of using religion and ethnicity to divide Nigerians ahead of the 2019 election.

Idoko made the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Sunday in Abuja.

“It’s regrettable that the unity of Nigerian is strengthened during sporting activities and otherwise becomes the case during electioneering activities.

“It is an indication that politicians have taken pleasure in using religion to divide Nigerians against themselves for political or selfish reasons. It must stop forthwith! Nigerians must resist it because it will take us nowhere,” he said.

He recalled with nostalgia how Muslims and Christians lived together peacefully some years back irrespective of religious or ethnic differences.

He said such divisions have been responsible for the obvious hatred among Nigerians, which, he said, has slowed down socio-economic and political development in the country.

“As 2019 political activities gather momentum, we appeal to politicians seeking elective offices to eschew hatred and bitterness, and promote courses that will promote peace and unity among Nigerians,” he said.

Idoko advised that the church should take the front row in moblising Nigerians to participate in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

“It doesn’t come by words alone. We have to take a step further to empower people educationally, financially and otherwise so they could have voice and knowledge to take their rightful place in Nigerian political and economic discussions,” he said.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, announced in Abuja on Sunday that Prince Charles would engage in peace-building activities, including addressing the persistent attacks of herdsmen on farming communities in Nigeria. The Prince of Wales and his wife, Princess Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall are expected in Nigeria from Nov. 6 to Nov. 8 in a high profile visit during which the royals would also have audience with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the visit, Arkwright said that one of the events on the agenda was for Prince Charles to discuss practical solutions to alleviating the tensions, arising from the activities of herdsmen. “People do want to come together and if we can provide that kind of environment then hopefully, we can come up with some ideas and solutions to resolving some of these conflicts”, he said. “Some of the issues like the farmers/herders crisis are deep-rooted and are about the economy, land resource, climate change and cultural issues. “The Prince of Wales will be looking at the causes, talking to people who are working in this area and together, seeing if we can find solutions and move on.” Arkwright said that addressing the root causes of conflicts would lead to a peaceful and more prosperous Nigeria and also become beneficial to the relations between Nigeria and Britain. He noted that the visit was also aimed at strengthening the existing ties between Nigeria and Britain as members of the Commonwealth. Prince Charles, who took over as the Head of the 53-member Commonwealth of Nations last April, succeeding his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, has already visited 44 African nations. “Prince Charles has not been here since the past 12 years. 2006 was the last time he was here and the Duchess of Cornwall, has never been to Nigeria. So it is about strengthening ties, particularly people-to-people ties. “We want to ensure that through the Commonwealth, which is another theme of the prince’s visit, we develop links to develop relationships whether in trade, environment or in education, all of which are important to the future of the Commonwealth and to the future of Nigeria.” The top diplomat said that other events lined up on the agenda of the visit would focus on culture, music, fashion, among others. “Prince Charles will be talking about rural livelihoods, agriculture, the environment, some of the passions that he has which is so relevant to Nigeria today and to young people and the importance of getting young people into jobs. “One of his passions as well is how do we build the skills of young people so that they will be equipped for the world. “There is a whole range of interests that he has and I think Nigeria is a wonderful place to come to because it brings together all of these interests.” The duchess is also to engage in literary activities with children and some Nigerian authors, while the prince would meet with traditional rulers and hold peace-building meeting with Nigerian youth ambassadors.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter has vowed to expose Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as not fit and proper to govern the state.

The leading opposition party in the country said this in a statement issued on Sunday by its Lagos state Publicity Secretary, Barrister Taofik Gani in Lagos.

The party also said Sanwo-Olu will lose the 2019 governorship election irrespective of the endorsements he received from political parties in the state.

The statement reads: “At the appropriate time, we shall expose Sanwo-Olu as truly not fit and proper to be elected governor of Lagos State.

“Sanwoolu is a ‘bad market’ that cannot appeal to Lagosians even if he buys political parties beyond the registered ones in the country.

“Indeed the emergence is tainted with desperation to have someone as governor who will rather fund the APC leaders. Lagosians will not forget that this is the Lagos APC reason for dropping Governor Ambode.

“To us, the consequence of the Sanwo-Olu imposition is the terminal acrimony, defections and anti-party in the Lagos APC, which we shall duly capitalise on to end the reign of APC in Lagos state,” he said.

The PDP further described Sanwo-Olu as an emergency candidate who is unprepared for the job compared to the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje whose blueprint to free Lagos had been on since 2006.
