Buhari sends condolence team to Bauchi over Ali Wakili’s death

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday sent a government delegation to Bauchi State to commiserate with the people of the state and the family of the late Senator representing Bauchi South, Ali Wakili, who died on Saturday.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, this was after the President had sent a condolence message and made telephone calls to the widows of the late senator who has been described as one of Buhari’s “staunch” supporters.
Others in the delegation were three Senior Special Assistants to the President — Sarki Abba, Ya’u Darazo and Shehu, as well as the Permanent Secretary in the State House, Jalal Arabi.Shehu said the delegation, which was led the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, was made up of the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello; and the Minister of State for Power, Works and Housing, Sulaiman Hassan.
In separate letters delivered to the Emir of Bauchi, Rilwan Adamu; and the older brother of the late senator, Mohammed Wakili, the President said he received the news of the Senator’s sudden death with “great shock and sadness.”
“By a common consent, Senator Ali Wakili was a noted and (an) indefatigable member of the Senate who lived a simple yet purposeful life, and to the end, he played politics of commitment to a cause.
“There is no doubt he would be remembered as a capable and principled representative of his Senatorial District and the people of Nigeria,” he wrote.
The President recalled that barely 24 hours earlier, he had been with the late senator at a wedding in Kano and, as he narrated, “he (Senator Wakili) looked so full life.”
He then prayed for the repose of the deceased, saying “I pray to God to forgive him and cover him with his mercy and grace.”

Dangote’s ex-wife steps out

Not much is known about the marital status of Africa’s richest man and billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote, because he guards it jealously.
However, he tries to be discreet about his family, rumour has it that he has been married and divorced a few times. Unlike some of his friends, who attend important events in company with their wives, Dangote always steps out at such occasions with his daughters, especially Halima, who he is particularly close to and almost always represents him at functions that he is unavoidably absent.
Even though the word in town is that Dangote has been married more than once and has kids from more than one woman, very little is known about his supposed exes. Nevertheless, the wedding of his daughter, Fatima, that held in Kano a few days ago provided the opportunity for people to meet with the bride’s mum, Zainab, who used to be married to Dangote.
The beautiful woman, who bears a striking resemblance to Fatima, was present at the numerous activities marking her daughter’s wedding to Jamilu Abubakar. She also played a prominent role at the Mother’s Night organised as part of the wedding activities and was supported by another of her daughters, Mariya, who,  unlike Fatima and Halima, is less prominent.

Okorocha boycotts first APC stakeholders’ meeting in Imo

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, is missing at the ongoing first Imo All Progressives Congress stakeholders’ meeting in Owerri, the state capital.
The meeting, which has in attendance the APC national organising secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, senators Benjamin Uwajumogu, Ifeanyi Araraume, and Okorocha’s deputy governor Eze Madumere, is being presided over by the state chairman, Hillary Eke.
A source said the governor boycotted the all-important stakeholders’ meeting because the APC chairman in the state refused to have the meeting hosted at Imo Government House as suggested by Okorocha.Others at the meeting which is going on at Concorde Hotel, Owerri, are the chairman of TETFUND, Emeka Nwajiuba; chairman of Nigeria Insurance Trustfund, Jasper Azuatalam; former secretary to the state government, Jude Ejiogu; Okorocha’s son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, and others.
A source at the meeting told our correspondent that the poor way the governor is funding the party in the state and lack of internal democracy due to the governor’s alleged highhandedness are the key agenda of the meeting.

Black Panther’ clings to lead, nears an all-time record

Digging in its claws, “Black Panther” has clung to its box-office lead for a fifth straight weekend, taking in an estimated $27 million in North American theaters while fending off two new films, website Exhibitor Relations said Sunday.
The Disney/Marvel superhero film has now earned a domestic total of just over $600 million while becoming the first film since “Avatar” in 2009 to hold the top spot for five straight weekends.
“Black Panther,” starring Chadwick Boseman as the superhero king of a utopian African country, has almost singlehandedly kept the year’s box office total slightly above the same period last year. It is only days away from overtaking another Marvel film, “The Avengers,” as the all-time top-grossing superhero film in North America, Variety reported.
In something of a surprise, third place went to a low-budget, faith-based drama, “I Can Only Imagine,” which took in $17.1 million — the biggest net ever for a film from Roadside Attractions. It easily fended off a challenge from Warner Bros.’ newly released “Tomb Raider,” an adventure reboot starring Swedish actress Alicia Vikander as the fearless and ferocious Lara Croft. The movie, also starring Dominic West and Kristin Scott Thomas, netted $23.5 million for the three-day weekend.
Made for a modest $7 million, the movie stars J. Michael Finley as the lead singer of a popular Christian band. Dennis Quaid and Cloris Leachman also star.
In fourth, down two spots from last week, was Disney’s science fantasy adventure “A Wrinkle in Time,” at $16.6 million, a 50 percent drop from last weekend. “Wrinkle,” the story of a girl’s search through time and space for a missing father, stars Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.
And in fifth place was new Fox release “Love, Simon,” at $11.5 million. The film stars Nick Robinson in what would be a classic love story — except that it is said to be the first romantic comedy from a mainstream studio to be told from a gay teen’s perspective.
Rounding out the top 10 were:
“Game Night” ($5.6 million)
“Peter Rabbit” ($5.2 million)
“Red Sparrow” ($4.5 million)“Strangers: Prey at Night” ($4.8 million)
“Death Wish” ($3.4 million)

Fraudster urges UTME candidates to pay for scores ‘upgrades’

  • There’s nothing called scores upgrade, JAMB warns
  • Results to be released Monday or Tuesday
As the writing of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination came to an end on Friday, fraudsters have invaded the Internet, asking candidates to call some numbers through which they could “upgrade” their results.
In a post shared on social media on Sunday, one Mr. Magaji who calls himself JAMB Upgrade Director, urged candidates to call his alleged telephone number 09038747733 for payment instructions for the “upgrade” of their results.
He goes ahead to provide names of candidates and their alleged scores which were supposedly upgraded from low marks to high ones.
“Attention, attention, attention. This is to inform those who score below 180 in JAMB, the exam board has officially release the upgrading system for those who did not do well. The impostor writes in bad grammar unexpected of any official of an examination body whatsoever:
“Scores has already been upgraded. Congratulations to these following names for your result has been upgraded, please contact upgrading board on 09038747733 Mr. Magaji or WhatsApp me.
“Note: you have to see your previous result before payment.”
The fraud then proceeds to provide what he calls candidates’ names, their previous scores and the ‘upgraded’ ones.
He writes, “You can check your name out — Desmond Samuel 111-280; Chukwu Glory 174-320; Loveth Jude 144-290; Adams Godstime 123-322; William Samson 136-290; Akpan Johnson 156-312; Roland Felicia 170-285; Emeka Queen 171-384; Vivian Hudson 163-299; Mary God’swill 152-321; Doris Gabriel 122-291; Adams Chuka 132-242.
He then calls on UTME candidates who wish to upgrade their results, saying, “If you wish to upgrade your JAMB score, please contact JAMB Upgrading Director (09038747733). Thank you.”
When contacted, JAMB spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, warned that the information is false in its entirety.
“In the process of transforming the grades of candidates for the 2016 exams, the examiners used the wrong parameters.Benjamin said, “Obviously, this fraud is so ignorant and she or he definitely misunderstood the 2016 incident in which the parameters used for the examination were wrong and therefore had to be corrected.
“What we call ‘transformation’ is actually a measurement instrument. So, when we discovered the problem, we did the right transformation but people took it out of proportion to interpret it as addition or subtraction of marks. We only did the right thing.
“It was never an upgrade, as this fraud and others in his category deemed it to be.
“Even in the 2016 incident, the candidates affected were not up to 60,000 out of the 1.5 million that wrote the exams.”
Benjamin warned that no one should listen to the lie, saying that the examination body is busy reviewing the CCTVs in each of the exam centres to ascertain how much candidates and supervisors complied with rules and regulations.
“The CCTVs will reveal any infractions that the supervisors might not have noticed.
“Once we are satisfied with the review, the results will be released without any delay.”
He said the results of over 1.2 million candidates are currently being collated, and that as such, no one can possibly claim to be in charge of any upgrade whatsoever.
He said, “There could be nothing called results upgrade because in JAMB, no one fails or passes. It is a selection exam, which is dependent on general performance.
“Though you may not score enough to get you admitted into a tertiary institution, no one fails.”
He disclosed that the cut-off point for the 2018 exam would likely be 180 or 190.
He also said the results would be released late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning.

Neymar’s injury might be most expensive in history

We will never know how different it could have or would have been. But the what-ifs that will linger around PSG’s Champions League exit are both endless and tantalizing.
Because there is a very strong argument to be made that the French super club, with a healthy Neymar, would have overcome a 3-1 first-leg deficit in Paris on Tuesday night. That it would have toppled Real Madrid. That its final-third stagnancy would have instead been liveliness; that misplaced passes would have instead led to chances, and that missed chances would have instead been goals.
There is also an argument to be made, then, that Neymar’s injury – the foot fracture that effectively ended his season three months early – is the most expensive injury in soccer history.
Neymar’s salary and transfer feeIs it a stretch? Perhaps, because injuries don’t actually come with dollar values attached. The analysis you’re about to read is based on inexact estimates, and even it won’t come to a single-number conclusion. But it will come to the conclusion that the cost to PSG of Neymar’s fifth metatarsal break is likely higher than that of any other injury to ever plague the sport.
The most obvious aspect of the injury’s “cost” is the portion of Neymar’s price – the money PSG pays him, and the money it paid Barcelona – that now yields no return.
We’ll begin with the transfer fee — $276 million. Let’s say Neymar, at 26, has 10 years of value to PSG. Either he plays for PSG and contributes to on-field success, or he leaves and PSG recoups some remaining portion of the $276 million on the sale.
Let’s also assume Neymar’s age-26 season is more valuable than, say, his age-32 season. With the Brazilian in his prime right now, the value of each successive season will depreciate yearly. An oversimplified estimate, then, would be that of the $276 million paid by PSG to Barcelona for Neymar, $35 million was for his 2017-18 season.
Because we know Neymar’s approximate salary – reportedly around $50 million – we can say that PSG was paying roughly $85 million for Neymar’s first campaign in Paris.
Of course, not all of Neymar’s value is his on-field performance. He’s a commercial asset as well. He raises the profile of the club, sells shirts, attracts new fans, and so on. That’s tough to put a number on, but let’s slash the estimate by $15 million and say that PSG was paying $70 million for Neymar the soccer player this year.
Because of the injury, a significant portion of that $70 million will offer no return on investment. This happens all the time with injuries, but it’s magnified by Neymar’s lucrative salary. The Brazilian will miss roughly three months of a nine-month season. If every game mattered the same, his missed time would be worth $23 million.
So let’s say all $70 million is going toward seven hypothetical Champions League games, round of 16 through final. Let’s say the value of a single game increases by $3 million per round, meaning 90 minutes of Neymar in the round of 16 was worth $6 million. By that analysis, Neymar’s injury cost PSG $64 million. The actual figure, though, would be more than that, because PSG isn’t paying Neymar to clown on overmatched Ligue 1 opponents. It isn’t paying him to get the club out of the Champions League group stage, either. It was doing that without him. It is paying Neymar for the express purpose of Champions League knockout round success.
That, obviously, is an aggressive estimate. Still, the actual “cost” of Neymar’s injury, solely in terms of transfer fee and wages, would likely be somewhere in between $23 million and $64 million. And that’s only one piece of the pie.
Champions League money
There’s the money that’s already been paid. Then there’s the revenue that will never arrive. The other big piece of the pie is the money that PSG will miss out on due to its Champions League exit.
First is the prize money. PSG would have earned $8 million for reaching the quarterfinals, a further $9 million for making the semis, $14 million more for reaching the final, and $6 million on top of that for winning. So in losing to Real Madrid, the Parisians missed out on somewhere between $8 million and $37 million in revenue shares from UEFA.
They also missed out on matchday revenue from at least one more home game, and possibly two. They made $112 million in matchday income from 27 home games the year prior, and presumably make more on Champions League nights than routine league weekends, so that’s another $5-10 million down the drain.
And finally, there’s the additional commercial value tied to a deep Champions League run. PSG’s brand is growing, but it still made $39 million less in commercial revenue in 2016-17 compared to 2015-16. That, in large part, can be attributed to a second-place league finish and a Champions League round of 16 exit last year, as opposed to a first-place finish and quarterfinal exit the year before.
Plus, better Champions League performance furthers a club’s value in future sponsorship deals. It, like Neymar, attracts new fans. It even allows the club to woo better players without overpaying for every single one of them.
Any dollar estimate here, of course, is based on the assumption that Neymar was the difference between progression and elimination. That assumption is shaky at best. The situation isn’t that absolute. But if it were, the club revenue-related “cost” of Neymar’s injury would be somewhere in the region of $50 million – give or take $20 million in either direction. That alone is roughly 8 percent of PSG’s annual turnover.
Financial Fair Play
The added layer here is PSG’s flirtation with Financial Fair Play – UEFA’s rules limiting disproportionately ludicrous spending. Everyone from fans to clubs to leagues to UEFA’s president himself raised a fuss this past summer when PSG spent what will eventually be $500 million on two players, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. The general consensus was that PSG was cutting it close; that it would have to find as many sources of revenue as possible to comply with the FFP regulations.
By not advancing in the Champions League, it missed out on a lot of potential revenue. And if those millions are the difference between compliance and sanctions – likely a transfer ban at the very least – Neymar’s injury could ultimately cost PSG much more.
Add all these “costs” up, and the value lost due to Neymar’s injury is probably somewhere in between $50 million and $100 million. Now, slash the estimate down considerably because Neymar’s injury wasn’t the sole reason PSG didn’t advance. But the final number is still tens of millions of dollars.
That surely makes the injury the most expensive ever – if such a thing exists.

Abundant Party Urges Buhari To Reject UK's Prison Offer

National Chairman of Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party, Mr. Tope Fasua, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to turn down offer by the United Kingdom to build a £700,000 new wing in Kirikiri, Lagos Prison.
Fasua said Nigeria should emulate the rejection of similar offer from UK by Jamaica in January 2017.
The National Chairman of ANRP maintained that contrary to the claim of British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, the prison deal would not be of any benefit to Nigeria.
Fasua noted that most prisons in the country are overcrowded, with most of them housing five times above the numbers of inmates they should accommodate.
He added that the same fate would befall the one to be constructed by UK as members of the political class, especially governors, are happy to have almost anyone incarcerated at will.
Fasua recommended that the government should rather work at decongesting the prisons and reform of the judicial system to reduce number of persons being sent to prison.
In this regard, the ANRP chairman recommended, "There should be non-custodial sentences like fines for minor offences especially for first time offenders. Prosecution can be done more diligently. Trials can be sped up especially with the use of technology, prisons should be expanded and refurbished. Depending on the charge, persons who have been in remand for periods of time long enough to be their prison terms should be rehabilitated and set free.”
“Had we a functional law enforcement, justice system, and correctional systems our prisons would not be crowded and not fail to meet the required standards, and therefore there would be no need for the UK to build a prison in Nigeria. Correcting these anomalies is what the UK can put pressure on Nigeria’s leaders to do," Fasua said.
Fasua also slammed Nigerian leaders for not being able to solve problems confronting the country.
He asserted that the country cannot continue to beg for aid from foreign countries, while politicians and cabals in the loot the nation’s wealth and live ‘ostentatious’ lives outside the country.
He wondered what has happened to exports proceeds and looted money recovered by anti-graft agencies.
Fasua said, “ANRP is opposed to the beggarly attitude of collecting aid, abdicating responsibility and asking others to solve our problems instead of solving our own problems with dignity.”
“We cannot keep collecting aid and loans from foreigners whilst our leaders at home are the most ostentatious in the world living large on our collective commonwealth. They (political leaders) lack sensitivity and shame, they have become dependent on loans and handouts. It is a great wonder where our export proceeds, taxes, and recovered monies go to because it looks like we are now totally bankrupt.”

Igbo will be major beneficiaries of Buhari’s second term –VON DG

Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has said Nd’Igbo would be the major beneficiaries of President Muhammadu Buhari’s second term in office.
Apex socio-political body of the Igbo, Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo, had, in a recent statement, said it was only interested in restructuring, and has not taken any decision on the 2019 elections.
The VON boss added that Igbo should support Buhari’s second term bid in order to have a chance of producing his (Buhari’s) successor in 2023.Speaking in Enugu on Sunday, Okechukwu, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, advised Igbo to back Buhari for a second term, as, according to him, restructuring was already on the agenda of the Buhari-led Federal Government.
Although the President is yet to declare his intention to go for another term, Okechukwu expressed certainty that Buhari would seek re-election.
Apparently reacting to Ohanaeze’s declaration that it was only concerned with restructuring, and was not thinking of the 2019 polls, Okechukwu said, “Restructuring is not a one-day event, but the golden opportunity of Buhari being the only Northerner, going by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and the zoning convention, with only four years that ends in 2023, is a matter of fact.
“Voting for any other Northerner means postponement of the golden opportunity which Mr. President’s re-election offers Nd’Igbo.”

FG offers jobs to 350 Niger Delta ex-militants

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd.), said the Federal Government has so far offered employment to 350 Niger Delta ex-agitators who graduated from various tertiary institutions across the world.
He said the 350 graduates were among the about 30,000 ex-agitators sponsored for various studies abroad by the amnesty office.
He said the ex-agitators who benefited from the job opportunities had already been posted to various federal ministries awaiting approval of the 2018 Appropriation Bill by the National Assembly.Boroh disclosed this in an interview with State House correspondents after attending a meeting of the Niger Delta Inter-Ministerial Committee presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday.
“The Federal Government ensured that about 350 of them have been employed in the various ministries in the country.
“We are only waiting for appropriation so that once they report to their various ministries, they will start earning their salaries,” he said.
Boroh also faulted reports that some of the ex-agitators studying abroad had been abandoned following the failure of the amnesty office to pay their school fees and allowances.
He explained, “I will never allow any of my children schooling outside this country under government (sponsorship) to suffer.
“So as we speak, 96 per cent of those on offshore scholarship have graduated and returned home.
“I have only a few, in fact not more than 10,000 of them left in the entire globe where they have been schooling in the US, UK, Asian countries and South Africa – they have graduated and have come home.”

BlackBerry sues Facebook over messaging apps

Canadian telecommunications firm BlackBerry sued Facebook on Tuesday, accusing the American social media company of infringing on its patents for messaging apps.
BlackBerry is claiming infringement on patents it holds for message encryption and notifications, and is seeking an injunction as well as damages for lost profits, although no figure was given.
Facebook and its wholly-owned services Instagram and WhatsApp are named as defendants in the lawsuit. The company said it intends to fight the lawsuit.
She said BlackBerry would like to partner with Facebook “in our drive toward a securely connected future, and we continue to hold this door open to them.”“We have a lot of respect for Facebook and the value they’ve placed on messaging capabilities, some of which were invented by BlackBerry,” BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney said in a statement.
“However, we have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies,” McKinney added.
Facebook shot back by disparaging BlackBerry, saying the lawsuit “sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business.”
“Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, Blackberry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight,” Facebook deputy general counsel Paul Grewal said.
BlackBerry, after abandoning the manufacture of its once-popular smartphones, which it also pioneered, has refocused its core business on cybersecurity software and services.

Obasanjo at 81, reveals ‘major regrets’

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lamented that his parents did not live long enough to see him make a headway in life.
He said it was “sad and regrettable” that, despite the sacrifices they made on him, his parents did not live long to be a part of the success story of his life.
He spoke to a gathering of eminent Nigerians and foreigners who came to felicitate him at his 81st birthday held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.
He said, “One of the things that I always miss or remember with sadness is that my parents left this world too early and the sacrifices they have made for me, how I wish they have been around to see the fruit of their labour.
“But if, as Yoruba believe that those who are dead are still able to see those who are alive, my parents, wherever they are, will also be grateful to those who have worked with me to achieve everything.
“If they were alive, they would have been proud of my achievements.”
Obasanjo also lamented the “failure of leadership in Nigeria and Africa,” arguing that God has not created bad situation for either Nigeria or Africa.
He said concerted efforts must be made to correct this, so that the country and the African continent could witness a new dawn of development.

Arsenal player Ainsley Maitland-Niles lives in £700,000 house, mother remains homeless

  • Ainsley Maitland-Niles earns £30,000 weekly
  • Worth £15m
The mother of Arsenal player, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, claims she is homeless and has been living in a metal storage container.
Jules Niles says she has to sneak past staff at the Big Yellow Storage warehouse to sleep in the 10ft square metal box – despite her son earning £30,000 a week.
The 38-year-old has been living in for the box for the past three months after her relationship with Ainsley, 20, broke down and he refused to be a guarantor so she could rent a flat.
“It’s not a home. I know what home feels like – to be able to shower, brush your teeth and sit in your room. She said: “It’s a metal container with no windows or carpet. There is no toilet or washing facilities.
“Most of all, I miss my family. It’s horrible. I just want to know what I’ve done wrong. It is heartbreaking.
“The area is covered in snow and it’s not been above freezing for days. I heard a homeless man died here overnight on Thursday.”
Ainsley – rated at £15m – lives in a £700,000 luxury apartment in Finchely, North London; with his brother Cordi, 23 and a charity worker, while his mum sleeps on a bare mattress in an industrial unit just off the M25 in Hertfordshire.
The pair grew up in council houses and temporary accommodation in and around Ilford, East London, with their mum saying she was sometimes so poor she went hungry.
Ainsley signed for the club’s academy when he was six, and made his debut for The Gunners aged 17 in the Champions League against Galatasaray in 2014.
The family initially lived in a three-bedroom home in Hertfordshire but fled in the middle of the night after Jule had a bust-up with Arsenal club staff.
Jule, a childcare worker, said she could not find anywhere to rent because she is on a zero-hours contract and her income is irregular. She was given six months to find a new home – and when she could not she was kicked out. She said: “I couldn’t believe it. I was devastated.”
She added: “I had to leave the family home because it was beyond what I could afford. Ainsley refused to be a guarantor for me.”
Jule now spends her days sitting in coffee shops or the local library to stay warm and pays £2 to shower at a local swimming pool.
She added: “I believe there are very dark forces operating within football. They want to see me down, because the longer Ainsley is away from me, the less of a positive influence I can exert over him.
“There are times when I have sat on my own and cried.
“It wouldn’t matter if Ainsley lost all the money tomorrow. He and Cordi are my sons and I love them. I just want them to know that.”

My assault same as Christ’s humiliation at Calvary, says Rev Fr Obinna who alleges attack by APC members

The archbishop of Owerri Catholic archdiocese, Valentine Obinna, has compared an alleged assault he suffered on Saturday with “Christ’s humiliation on the cross of Calvary.”
He added that he had left in God’s hand his “assault” by “All Progressives Congress members loyal to the Imo State Government.”
APC members who reportedly accompanied wife of the state governor, Nkechi Okorocha; chief of staff to the governor, Uche Nwosu; Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Acho Ihim; and some commissioners had allegedly invaded the altar and ordered the archbishop to stop his speech, which they considered to be anti-state government. The cleric alleged that some persons suspected to be APC members had assaulted him during a burial service on Saturday.
The incident happened on Saturday at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Ngwoma-Obube in the Owerri North Local Government Area during a requiem mass in honour of the mother of one Mr. Alex Mbata.
The chief Judge of the state, Pascal Nnadi; and the senator representing Imo East, Samuel Anyanwu, were also present at the church service which ended in a fiasco.
A source at the church service, Wilson Okeke, told our correspondent that the APC members accused the prelate of allowing someone to campaign for the People’s Democratic Party during a speech, while he allegedly refused an APC member who wanted to do the same.
“The archbishop was not the one who celebrated the mass. It was the parish priest.
“The archbishop was only making a speech at the end of the mass, just before the benediction. It was at this point that the assault happened.
“While the archbishop was talking, a member of the APC, Chris Ekwueme, subtly interjected him by saying that there were also good roads constructed by the state government.”
“Initially, the archbishop refused to hand over the microphone to him; but when he whispered into his ear, the archbishop obliged him,” Okeke said.Okeke added that at some point, a People’s Democratic Party member, Iyke Ehiriwe, asked to be allowed to speak.
Our correspondent gathered that the PDP member urged the people to vote out the APC government in the state on the basis of “bad governance.”
“The comment elicited angry reactions from the people,” Okeke said.
“APC members who came with the government functionaries invaded the altar and asked to be allowed to speak, but the prelate allegedly refused.
“This led to a protest, and some Reverend Fathers intervened and aided the archbishop to complete his speech before the benediction was said,” Okeke alleged.
The archbishop who spoke to our correspondent on the phone on Sunday through the Director of Media and Communications of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, Rev Fr. George Nwachukwu, claimed that he was “insulted and assaulted by the APC members.”
Nwachukwu said, “The archbishop and the archdiocese have decided to take no action against the APC members who assaulted the church.
“We have taken the assault on the archbishop the same way Jesus was insulted, assaulted and humiliated on the cross of Calvary.
“We have left it in the hands of God. The assault to the church and the archbishop was very painful, provocative and highly unwarranted; but we have resolved to press no charges but to leave it in the hands of God.”
But the media aide to the chief of staff to the governor, Chikezie Nwadike, who said he was at the church service, told our correspondent that APC members were not to blame.
Nwadike heaped the blame on the PDP member who reportedly “campaigned” in the church, denying that the archbishop was assaulted by APC members.

Asking Gov Ajimobi to seek third term is sarcastic, Olubadan says

The Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has said his widely-reported statement in which he said he would have loved Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State to go for another term if the constitution permitted, was a joke he cracked with the governor at a public function.
He added that it was a sarcasm and that his listeners should realise it as such.
It may be recalled that during a meeting between the governor and monarchs in the state in Ibadan last week, Olubadan commended Ajimobi, adding that he deserved another term as governor if the constitution would allow him.
Olubadan said of Ajimobi on the occasion, “Yoruba don’t appreciate themselves except to abuse and criticise; but when someone has done well, we must say it.
“I am talking about what I have seen so far. In view of this, I would have loved him to go for another term if not that the constitution does not allow it.
“The governor has performed very well. He has recorded unprecedented achievements worthy of commendation. This is the only way to spur him into greater performance for the benefit of the whole state.”
However, the monarch, in a statement signed by his Personal Assistant and Director, Media and Public Affairs, Adeola Oloko, revisited the statement on Sunday when Ibadan indigenes paid him a visit as part of the 2018 Ibadan Week.
According to the statement, Olubadan had no interest in recommending anyone for a political office, adding that some people had given his speech at the public function another meaning that did not represent his thought.
The statement said in part, “The Ajimobi third term statement credited to the monarch in the media was largely misunderstood because people could not read between the lines.
“He, however, appealed to all his children who are aggrieved over the statement not to take the matter to heart and read more about the use of language, idioms and sarcasm.”

Okorocha’s Son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, Declares Governorship Ambition – Report

The son-in-law of Imo state Governor Rochas Okorocha, Uche Nwosu, has reportedly declared his intention to run for governor of the state in 2019.
Nwosu, who is also Okorocha’s chief of staff, made the declaration in his country home in Eziama Obire, Vanguard reports.
This comes on the heels of Okorocha reiterating his determination to aid Nwosu’s gubernatorial ambition while he himself contests for the Imo West senatorial seat in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
Okorocha said his decision to run for a senatorial seat is to make sure the people are represented by someone who has their interest at heart.
Nwosu’s declaration and Okorocha’s support for him have not gone down well in the Imo state chapter of the APC as other candidates demand a chance at the polls.
Senator Ifeanyi Ararume, an aspirant, told his supporters the APC does not belong o one man.
He said, “There is no one man, no matter who the person is that owns this party. This party belongs to all of us. You must work hard to ensure that this party is strong in your area.
