50-year-old Nigerian man convicted for the rape and sexual assault of 12-year-old girl he befriended online

A 50-year-old Nigerian man has been convicted for the rape and sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl he befriended online.Simon Owoade of St Anselms Road, Hayes, pleaded guilty on Monday, December 3, at Harrow Crown Court. He is due to be sentenced in January 2019.A further two counts of sexual assault of a child under 13 years that Owoade admitted to were left to lie on file.Between 1 June and late July 2017, Owoade made contact with the victim through a social media messaging site.Following numerous messages, Owoade managed to persuade the victim to meet him in London and Potters Bar on a number of occasions. He would take her to various places including car parks and hotels where he would sexually assault her.Owoade shared pornographic material with the victim and the girl was encouraged to share naked photos of herself. In July 2017, the victim stopped communicating with Owoade, but in April 2018 he texted her asking to meet up because he missed her. They met up numerous times until 18 May, when the matter was reported to police by the victim's parents.Detective Chief Inspector Neil John of the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command said:"I would like to praise the victim for her courage in speaking to officers and providing vital evidence to prosecute Owoade, who used his social media profile to gain the victim's trust, share intimate photos, and then use those images to coerce her into sexual activity."This is still very much a live enquiry. We are aware that Owoade had links with some charities who he involved himself with as a volunteer. This of course may have put him in direct contact with vulnerable people. It is very possible he has committed offences against others and I would appeal to anyone with information or concerns to contact police. Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence and we have specialist officers to support victims through the process.""Between 2006 and 2008, Owoade was employed as a PCSO with the Met Police, working within the Osterley and Spring Grove Safer Neighbourhood Teams. We have received no reports of any offences being committed in his capacity as a PCSO and Owoade left the organisation of his own volition in 2008.

Police find a body in the sea near spot where British animal trainer went missing during a night out in Tenerife

Police carrying out a search in Tenerife have found a woman's body near the spot where a British animal trainer disappeared.28-year-old Amy Gerard, who was originally from Grimsby, went missing in the early hours of Friday morning.  The remains were discovered in the sea opposite the lighthouse in the city of Puerto de la Cruz where Amy Gerard lived.  A police spokesman said:I can confirm a woman's body has been found in the sea.It is too early to say at this stage whether it is that of the missing Briton or not.The discovery comes after a video emerged showing Amy singing along to The Pogues song Fairytale of New York in the Molly Malone Irish pub in Puerto de la Cruz in the early hours of Friday morning. She can be seen holding hands with German boyfriend Dennis Kissling as she dances along with her colleagues before turning to the camera to blow a kiss, according to footage obtained by The Sun.  Brendan Reid Spencer, who owns the bar, said Molly arrived with six colleagues around 11pm on Thursday to celebrate a friend's birthday and listen to live music. Moments after the footage was taken she left the bar with her boyfriend before they parted ways at the entrance. She has not been seen since.  She was reported missing by a friend on Saturday morning and a search began immediately, leading to the discovery of the body today. But it hasn't been confirmed if she is the one.

3 Young Nigerians Win N450, 000 in 4YBY World AIDS Day Event

In commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1st 2018, the 4Youth By Youth (4YBY) Group rewarded 3 winners - Tony Akeju, Ginika Nzokwe, and Idris Badmus - for their participation in the social media-driven HIV Self-Testing Contest which ran from October 25th to November 25th 2018, in a bid to crowdsource innovative ideas to promote HIV self-testing in Nigeria. The winners also went home with cool gadgets, as well as mentorship opportunities from leading business and health professionals; this training will be based on the ideas they have pitched.  The 4YouthByYouth (4YBY) Group is a team of Nigerian researchers and scientists backed by the United States National Institute of Health (NIH). They have identified the adoption of HIV self-testing as an additional way to create demand for HIV testing, thereby increasing knowledge of HIV status and reducing the accelerated spread of HIV/AIDS nationwide among young people in Nigeria. The HIV testing in the privacy of one's home will help to address issues of access and the stigma known with the disease. Dr. Oliver Ezechi of Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Lagos (NIMR) and Dr. Juliet Iwelunmor of Saint Louis University, Missouri lead the team.  Speaking at the World AIDS Day HIV self-testing awareness event, 4Youth By Youth Principal investigator, Dr. Juliet Iwelunmor said, “Our goal is to drive the increased participation of young Nigerians in the fight against HIV/AIDS through generating demand and adoption of self-testing. This we hope to achieve by rewarding innovative and creative ideas that encourage self-testing amongst Nigerian Youth, which will ultimately go a long way in helping to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.”  The 4YBY Group in collaboration with Lagos AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) had earlier in the day organized a walkathon, which took place before the commencement of the award ceremony. Free condoms were given out, while oral and confirmatory blood-based HIV tests were administered to over 300 attendees by medical practitioners at the event. Over 1000 attendees got a chance to enter a raffle draw to win lots of exciting prizes.
