FG blames NASS for delaying 2019 budget presentation

Senator-Udoma-Udo-Udoma.pngSays non-oil sector drives GDP growth in Q3 The Federal Government has accused the National Assembly for delaying the submission of the 2019 budget proposal to both chambers. Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, said though the presidency has written the National Assembly to indicate a date when it will be convenient for President Muhammadu Buhari to present the budget estimates, the lawmakers were yet to respond. The minister expressed the concern over the delay on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Udoma, however, did not disclose the figures budgeted for 2019. Buhari had convened a special FEC session last Friday where the budget estimates was approved. “As you already know, the budget is ready. We are liaising with the National Assembly because they are to give us a date. If they say today, we will go. The budget is ready,” he said. The Daily Times recalls that FEC had on October 24 this year approved the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) for the 2019 -2021 to provide template for the 2019 budget. In the MTF/FSP, N8.73 trillion was estimated for the 2019 budget which is N400bn lower than that of 2018. The price of crude oil per barrel was pegged at $60, exchange rate at $305 and daily crude oil production was put at 2.3m by the FEC. The MTEF/ FSP was designed to translate strategic development objective of the economic recovery and growth plan into a realistic and implementable budget framework. Meanwhile, Udoma also reported a slight increase in Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which was shored up from 1.5 percent in Q2 of 2018 to 1.81 percent in Q3 of the same year. He said the non-oil sector which had suffered neglect in previous administrations facilitated the growth. According to him, transportation, electricity, telecommunication, metal-oils, quarry among others grew the GDP by 3.32 percent in Q3 and represented the strongest growth trajectory in twelve consecutive quarters since the Q4 of 2015. He said: “Today, I reported to FEC that we have seen steady recovery from the recession period. The report indicates that the economy when measured by real GDP grew at 1.81 percent in the Q3, 2018, compared to 1.5 percent in the Q2, 2018. “FEC was particularly encouraged to note that economic growth continues to be driven by the non-oil sector which grew by 3.32 percent in the 3rd quarter, this has been the strongest growth in non-oil GDP in twelve consecutive quarters since the 4th quarter of 2015. “By economic activity, non-oil growth was driven by transportation, electricity, telecommunication, metal oils, quarry and so on. In addition, agriculture and manufacturing sectors also grew, agriculture by 1.91 percent manufacturing by 1.92 percent. These are stronger growth than in the 2nd quarter. So overall, Council was most encouraged by these results which shows improvement in the economy and that our plans are working”

Don’t Pick Passengers On Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway” – FRSC Issues Serious Warning To Drivers

FRSC-1-1-700x453.jpg
The Federal Road Safety Commission has issued a serious warning to drivers not to pick passengers on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Ifo command of Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ogun has warned that commercial drivers who pick passengers on the Lagos-Abeokuta highway risk being crushed by articulated vehicles.
Mr Joshua Ibitomi, the Ifo Unit Commander of FRSC, gave the warning on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota.
Ibitomi noted that the warning became necessary to avoid unnecessary loss of lives on the highway. According to him, most commercial drivers on the Owode-Ijako section of the road park on the road to pick their passengers.
The unit commander said this exposes road users to danger as well cause traffic snarl in the area.
“It has also been observed that most of the road accidents are caused by impatience on the part of the drivers,’’ he said.
Ibitomi said that palliative measures initiated by the state government to ensure a free flow of traffic at Owode-Ijako were abused by the drivers plying the area. He, however, said that the FRSC and other traffic agencies like Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps would intensify monitoring in the area to check the excesses of motorists.
Also speaking, Mr Adekunle Oguntoyinbo, the Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, advised motorists to be disciplined and desist from wrong overtaking, especially in construction zones.
Oguntoyinbo implored motorists to obey road signs and refrain from speeding.
He also said that breathalyser would be used to ascertain the quantity of alcohol consumed by drivers.

How Atiku Will Get Chibok Girls Back From Boko Haram If Elected President – Secondus Explains

uche-secondus-001.jpghe national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, believes the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is capable of securing the release of the remaining Chibok girls abducted by terrorist group, Boko Haram.
Terrorists invaded the premises of Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok, Borno State, and kidnapped 276 female students from the school hostel in April 2014.
Even though the girls were abducted during the administration of then-president, Goodluck Jonathan, President Muhammadu Buhari secured the release of 103 of them after he was inaugurated in 2015. Some of the other girls also escaped from the terrorist group and were found by military troops, but 112 remain unaccounted for.
According to a report published by the Wall Street Journal in December 2017, President Buhari approved the payment of €3 million to Boko Haram to facilitate the release of the girls. Five Boko Haram commanders were also released by the Nigerian Army as part of the deal.
While speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, Secondus said Buhari’s government has not been doing enough to engage the terrorist group despite the return of over 100 girls.
He said an Atiku administration would be more engaging and address issues more intentionally and effectively than the current administration.
He said, “Before they (APC) came on board, they said immediately they come in they would release the girls and all that. Yes, some girls have been released but not much has been had.
“We’ll engage those who are involved with the Chibok girls; not only deploying the people but technology as to locate them and how to get them out.
“I believe that this government is not doing enough in either deploying technology or otherwise engagement.
“We’ve learned from our experience and we’re going to do more and the president is going to do something totally different. This is one president that you can see and you can feel and he’s able to move around and engage people.
“This is most important because the president of a country must take responsibility, must be seen and address issues.”
Buhari recently renewed his commitment towards ensuring the return of the remaining girls during a bilateral meeting with Swiss president, Alain Berset, on the sidelines of the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference in Poland.
”We will continue to make the safe release of the remaining Chibok girls a priority and will welcome any kind of support from any quarters to make this happen,” he said.
Secondus expressed confidence that Nigerians will remove President Buhari at the polls in 2019 because the economy has collapsed and insecurity has spread to all corners of the country.
“Nigerians are ready for change the change. It’s not a question of PDP but a rescue mission to recreate the future of Nigeria,” he said.

No more COSON money for Okoroji as accounts get frozen - PMAN

COSON's banks accounts now frozen, until Okoroji explains how he collected & used entertainers royalties. COSON's banks accounts now frozen, until Okoroji explains how he collected & used entertainers royalties. The Performing Musician Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) will like to inform all its members, and all musical content owners in Nigeria , that in furtherance to the suspension of COSON’s operating license by the Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC), all COSON bank accounts have now been frozen.  Working with key corporate members like Premier Music Publishing Company Limited and Ivory Music Limited, we have secured a court order to freeze the accounts in a bid to stop the illegal and unsupervised spending of monies belonging to rights owners by Chief Tony Okoroji and his illegally constituted board. This move has become necessary in consideration of the fact that Chief Okoroji has vehemently refused comply with the directives of the industry regulator, NCC and also accede to the demand for full forensic audit of the account and operations of COSON under operations of COSON under his tenure. He has continued to spend the organisation's funds without prerequisite oversight thereby hurting the earnings due to the right owners. Furthermore, all owners of musical content in Nigeria are advised to disregard any information being propagated by Chief Tony Okoroji and his cronies on social media that he enjoys the support of the right owners. Virtually all relevant stakeholders in the music industry including top artistes, publishers and record labels with active music catalogs are aligned in support of the NCC's suspension of COSON’s operating license and with PMAN, Premier Music and Ivory Music in the freezing all its bank accounts.  The PMAN President, Pretty Okafor who is also a COSON member appeals to all musicians to stay calm and be reassured that the Union is doing all it can to end the current fracas in the collective management space. The PMAN President emphasized that the only way to guarantee effective copyright administration practice in Nigeria is putting in place proper operational policied and legislative structures to ensure accountability and sustainable growth. Pretty Okafor PMAN president

Obasanjo is confused, no one takes him seriously' -Garba Shehu

'Obasanjo is confused, no one takes him seriously' -Garba ShehuThe Presidency has dismissed the recent utterances by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, as a sign of confusion not worthy of attention. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said that whoever Obasanjo chooses to support at the 2019 elections is irrelevant, as the former president had publicly changed his mind on the matter so many times over the past few months alone."Former president Obasanjo denounces one person today and supports that same person the next day. When it pleases him, he brings God into the matter and uses that as his excuse for whatever position he has chosen," he said.Shehu added that he was not surprised that newspapers reported Obasanjo expressing neutrality at a weekend forum, only for the former president to express a completely different stance after a day or two."We have learnt not to take his utterances seriously anymore. We know that the slightest wind can make him change his mind again. After all, this is the same man who publicly tore his party registration card barely four years ago, and he now claims to be backing the same party," Shehu said.
