KANO – Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) Sunday expressed readiness to cooperate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its plan to investigate alleged underage voting during the just concluded Council poll in Kano .
The federal electoral umpire’s move, which was announced by the its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu at the election preparation workshop underway at the Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos, was hinged on video footage that went viral on the social media, allegedly showing some voters who were obviously children participating in the local council election, last weekend.
A statement signed by the KANSIEC Chairman Professor Garba Ibrahim Sheka and obtained by Vanguard hailed INEC decision to investigate the allegation and restating KANSIEC stand of the credibility of the election that was monitored by election observers and adjudged to be free, fair and peaceful.
Professor Sheka in the statement noted that “INEC being the only statutory body in the country saddled with the responsibility to register eligible voters and keep the database of electorates will be accorded the required support and cooperation .”
He said they would pave way “for the team of investigators to ascertain the veracity of the underage voting allegation in Kano state’s last week local government election.”
The statement added that “KANSIEC is confident that the outcome of the investigation will vindicate and strengthen the confidence of the public in the state electoral commission to conduct free and fair local government election.”
